MAPPING OF EXISTING MARICULTURE ACTIVITIES IN SOUTH-EAST SULAWESI “POTENTIAL, CURRENT AND FUTURE STATUS”

The present study identifies existing mariculture activities and its constraints in SE Sulawesi, along with its geo-physical attributes in the Province.This allows for a better understanding the potential, current and future status of mariculture development in the area and making sure its sustainability. The study was conducted to map the existing mariculture activities in SE Sulawesi. Data collection was performed in June 2009. Spatial and attribute data of the existing mariculture were acquired by interviewing fish farmer using open-ended questionnaire and analyzed using ArcGIS 9.x. Key water quality parameters consisted of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity, depth, clarity, and turbidity and analyzed using STORET Indeks. Three big clusters of existing mariculture activities are located in Kendari, Muna and Buton areas, collectively serving as both a source of mariculture products and a market destination or transit location. All surveyed locations of existing mariculture activities in SE Sulawesi show relatively optimal water quality conditions. Site capacity and suitability analysis of existing or potential areas of mariculture activities and development have largely not been considered by stakeholders involved in managing coastal areas, resulting in crowded and unmanaged development with multiple overlapping economic activities in some areas. Piloting of integrated ‘value-adding’ mariculture industries (e.g. raw material, processed products and ‘ready to eat’ industries) might help ease some if not all of the existing economic problems of the mariculture sector

Iridium oxide (IV) nanoparticle-based lateral flow immunoassay

Lateral flow biosensors are paper-based devices that allow the detection of different types of analytes with quickness, robustness and selectivity, without leaving behind paper sensors benefits as low-cost, recyclability and sustainability. Nanomaterials have been widely reported in lateral flow biosensors, offering new sensing strategies based on optical or electrical detection techniques. Looking for other advantageous nanomaterials, we propose for the first time the use of iridium oxide (IV) nanoparticles in lateral flow assays for the detection of human immunoglobulin as a model protein. These nanoparticles can be easily prepared and conjugated with biomarkers. Their dark blue color gives a high contrast against the white background of the strips being in this way excellent labels

DEFORMAZIONI DEL SUOLO MEDIANTE ANALISI DEI DATI MAREOGRAFICI NELL’AREA VULCANICA NAPOLETANA NEL PERIODO 1999-2006

Osservatorio Vesuviano, department of Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, is in charge of the surveillance monitoring of the Campanian volcanic areas, to promptly recognize any variation of the physical-chemical parameters helpful as precursors of eruption. The ground deformations in the Vesuvius and Phlegrean area are monitored by means of classical technique (like optical leveling and tiltmetry) and satellite technique (like global positioning system). Moreover, due to the vicinity of a coastline for both the volcanic system, the ground deformations are also monitored by the continuous recording of the sea level, using suitable tide gauge stations. Tide gauge data are also used to analyze the local characteristics of the sea wave even in presence of extreme phenomena. The Vesuvius Observatory tide gauge network, used in this paper, is operating since 1970 and reached, in the eighties, the consistency of 6 stations, Napoli, Nisida, Pozzuoli, Miseno,Castellamare di Stabia and Torre del Greco. Data since 1999 are retrieved and a database have been organized, corrected and validated up today, spanning over 8 years, using were necessary statistical gap filling technique. Data have been analyzed in the frequency domain and the local astronomical components have been defined by harmonic analysis, inferring amplitude and phase for the main diurnal and semi-diurnal components The obtained residual respect to the astronomical tide contains information about meteorological component, eustatic variation, ground deformation and noise. The residual sea level variation, for each site, can be represented by two terms: sea level background and local sea level variations due to noise, site effects and ground deformation. Removing, by deconvolution, the differential behavior of the sea-level respect to a reference station, provide an estimation of the ground level variation. This analysis shows no significant level variation at Vesuvius, while in the Campi Flegrei caldera, tide gauge data, put in evidence the presence of the so-called mini-uplift during last 7 years

Functional Ingredients based on Nutritional Phenolics. A Case Study against Inflammation: Lippia Genus

Epidemiological studies have reported convincing evidence that natural dietary compounds may modify inflammation, it being an important event described in the pathophysiology of age-related infirmity. Among different dietary components, nutritional phenolics have demonstrated links to a lower risk of inflammation in the most common degenerative and chronic diseases. In this way, the healthy potential of phenolics against inflammation and the emergence of new functional ingredients have caused an enhancement of nutraceutical and functional food formulation. The present review focuses on: (a) nutritional phenolics and their effects on inflammation and (b) functional ingredients based on phenolic compounds with anti-inflammatory properties. Furthermore, the emerging interest in health-promoting products by consumers has caused an increase in the demand for functional products and nutraceuticals. Additionally, this review includes a case study of the Lippia genus, which has shown anti-inflammatory effects claiming to be a natural alternative for the management of this physiological disorder. Clinical-epidemiological Characterization of Suicide in Elder Adults

Foundation: suicide is one of the first causes of death in Pinar del Rio. The mortality rate due to suicide in Consolación del Sur exceeds the national average, most of the cases range over 60 years old. Objective: to characterize elderly people dead due to suicide in Consolación del Sur between 2000 and 2015. Method: a descriptive research was done with the universe of 85 dead elder adults. The calculation was done on the bases of mortality data and typification survey of suicidal behavior of the non-transmissible diseases department of the Provincial Center of Hygiene and Epidemiology. The variables analyzed were: age range, sex, scholarship, marital status, working status, if they lived alone or not, type of conflict, suicidal method, previous suicidal attempt, addictions and premature mortality. Results: the rate of suicide increased proportionally to age, the average age was 73,8 ±8,9 years old. There was a male over mortality of 3,7 men by each woman. The most frequent suicides occurred in old men with elementary school level, without working or marital bond and living with other people but with noticeable problems in the familial structure and functioning. The most frequent method was hanging. Most of the elders did not have previous suicidal attempts nor additions. It was observed a premature death in 52,9 % of the cases. Conclusion: premature death due to suicide can be seen as a reflection of the deterioration of the quantity of life but also its quality of the studied elder adults
