    Impact of heavy rains of 2018 in western Japan: disaster-induced health outcomes among the population of Innoshima Island

    Southwestern Japan suffered its worst rains in 2018 causing floods and mudslides, claiming 225 lives and forcing millions for evacuations. Referred as "Heisei san-ju-nenshichi-gatsugou", the disaster was the result of incessant precipitation caused by the interaction of typhoon "Prapiroon" with the seasonal rain front "Baiu". The present epidemiological study aims to investigate disaster-induced health issues in 728 residents of Innoshima island in the Hiroshima Prefecture by comparing their clinical data in pre-disaster (2017) and disaster-hit (2018) years which was obtained from annual health screening. Comparison of data showed a significant increase in the urine protein concentration in victims following the disaster. Probing further into the household conditions, showed that a total of 59,844 households were affected with water outage during the heavy rains, which was accompanied by severe damage of sewerage pipelines with complete recovery process taking two weeks. This two weeks of the crisis forced victims to refrain from using restrooms which in turn led to infrequent urination, thereby explaining the increased urine protein concentration in victims following the disaster. The present study addresses the acute health implications caused by the water crisis and serves as a precautionary measure for disaster management council to provide enhanced aftercare services in victims in further events of natural disasters

    Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) production from alkylphenols, mono and poly-aromatic hydrocarbons using Bacillus sp. CYR1: A new strategy for wealth from waste

    In the present study five different types of alkylphenols, each of the two different types of mono and poly-aromatic hydrocarbons were selected for degradation, and conversion into poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) using the Bacillus sp. CYR1. Strain CYR1 showed growth with various toxic organic compounds. Degradation pattern of all the organic compounds at 100 mg/l concentration with or without addition of tween-80 were analyzed using high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Strain CYR1 showed good removal of compounds in the presence of tween-80 within 3 days, but it took 6 days without addition of tween-80. Strain CYR1 showed highest PHB production with phenol (51 ± 5%), naphthalene (42 ± 4%), 4-chlorophenol (32 ± 3%) and 4-nonylphenol (29 ± 3%). The functional groups, structure, and thermal properties of the produced PHB were analyzed. These results denoted that the strain Bacillus sp. CYR1 can be used for conversion of different toxic compounds persistent in wastewaters into useable biological polyesters

    Effect of Environmental Change while Climbing Mt. Daisen on Forced Vital Capacity and Forced Expiratory Volume % in Young Women

    The aim of the present study was to clarify the effects of environmental change while climbing Mt. Daisen on forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume % in young women in summer. Seven healthy Japanese women (age: 22.6 ± 4.2 years) volunteered to climb Mt. Daisen (1,709m), located in Tottori prefecture, in August. Participants\u27 expiratory forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume % (FEV_%) and arterial oxygen saturation (SpO_2) were measured at 4 points (Ground: 10m, Rest point: 780m, Summit: 1,709m, Goal point: 780m). The measurements were conducted soon after the subjects\u27 arrival at each point. The degree of dyspnea sensation was measured at Ground, Rest point, Goal point and at each station. There were no significant changes in FVC. FEV_% at the summit was significantly lower than at the Ground and Rest point. No significant differences were found in SpO_2 at each measuring point. The degree of dyspnea sensation at each station soon after the subjects\u27 arrival was significantly higher than those at the Rest point. The results of this study indicated mild airway contraction induced by stresses on the respiratory system from increasing exercise intensity during an ascent of Mt. Daisen

    A biphenyl-fused BODIPY was synthesized through a facile oxidative cyclization of peripheral aryl-substituents at the β-position of the BODIPY unit. The extended π-system of the fused BODIPY induces near-infrared (NIR) absorption and strong π–π interactions in the solid state.     A Magic-set Approach to Computing Stable Models on MGTP

    The stable model semantics is now one of the standard semantics for general logic programs. A simple procedure for computing stable models has been proposed by Inoue et al. [IKH92]. In this paper, we present efficient techniques to compute the stable models of a general logic program. We propose a program transformation based on the magic-sets, which generates models and analyzes negation-as-failure atoms dynamically. We also show experimental results which show remarkable speedup compared with the original procedure. 1 Introduction The stable model semantics [GL88] is now one of the standard semantics for general logic programs.     Preventive Effects of Chlorogenic Acid on Alveolar Bone Loss in Ligature-Induced Periodontitis in Mice

    Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a polyphenol that is present in coffee beans, many vegetables, and fruits. Since CGA has been reported to exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, it is expected to protect against periodontitis. In the present study, we used a ligature-induced experimental periodontitis model and investigated the beneficial effects of CGA against alveolar bone resorption caused by experimental periodontitis. To examine the inhibitory effects of CGA on bone loss, a ligature was wrapped around the maxillary right second molar, and CGA was intraperitoneally injected once a day for 2 weeks. In another experiment to investigate the restorative effects of CGA on bone loss, a ligature was wrapped around the maxillary right second molar for 2 weeks, it was then removed, and CGA was intraperitoneally injected once a day for 2 weeks. At the end of the experiments, the maxillae were removed, and CT images were taken. Alveolar bone loss was measured as the distance from the cement–enamel junction to the alveolar crest. The statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad Prism6 (Dunn’s multiple comparison test). The results revealed that the ratio of the buccal alveolar bone loss (vs. the bone loss on the nonligated side) induced by ligation was significantly decreased by the administration of CGA (5 mg/kg) for 2 weeks. Moreover, the bone loss ratio on the buccal and palatal sides after 2 weeks of ligation was significantly decreased by the 2-week administration of CGA (5 mg/kg).     Abstract Aims/Introduction Research on the incidence and underlying mechanisms of rapid renal function decline in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with preserved renal function and normoalbuminuria is limited. This study aimed to investigate the involvement of hemoglobin level as a risk factor for rapid decliners among patients with type 2 diabetes with preserved renal function and normoalbuminuria. Materials and Methods This was a retrospective observational study of 242 patients with type 2 diabetes with a baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate of ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2 and normoalbuminuria (1 year. The annual rate of estimated glomerular filtration rate decline during the follow‐up period was calculated using least square regression analysis; rapid decliners defined at ≥3.3%/year. Risk factors associated with rapid decliners were identified using a logistic regression analysis of variables previously identified as risk factors of rapid decliners. Results The median follow‐up period was 6.7 years, and 34 patients showed rapid decliners. On multivariate analysis, lower baseline hemoglobin level was a risk factor of rapid decliners (odds ratio 0.69, 95% confidence interval 0.47–0.99; P = 0.045). Furthermore, the baseline hemoglobin levels were correlated positively with iron and ferritin levels, implying that an impaired iron metabolism might cause lower hemoglobin levels in rapid decliners. Conclusions In patients with type 2 diabetes with preserved renal function and normoalbuminuria, lower hemoglobin levels were a risk factor for rapid decliners, where disturbed iron metabolism might precede the development of diabetic kidney disease
