    We construct fermionic Lagrangians with anisotropic scaling z=2, the natural counterpart of the usual z=2 Lifshitz field theories for scalar fields. We analyze the issue of chiral symmetry, construct the Noether axial currents and discuss the chiral anomaly giving explicit results for two-dimensional case. We also exploit the connection between detailed balance and the dynamics of Lifshitz theories to find different z=2 fermionic Lagrangians and construct their supersymmetric extensions.Comment: Typos corrected, comment adde

    Knowledge and causal attributions for mental disorders in HIV-positive children and adolescents: results from rural and urban Uganda

Increasing availability of antiretroviral treatment (ART) has led HIV to be considered a chronic disease, shifting attention to focus on quality of life including mental wellbeing. We investigated knowledge and causal attributions for mental disorders in HIV-positive children and adolescents in rural and urban Uganda. This qualitative study was nested in an epidemiological mental health study among HIV-positive children and adolescents aged 5–17years in rural and urban Uganda. In-depth interviews were conducted with caregivers of HIV-positive children (5–11years) and adolescents (12–17years) in HIV care. Interviews were audio recorded with permission from participants and written consent and assent sought before study procedures. Thirty eightparticipants (19 caregivers, 19 children/adolescents) were interviewed. Age range of caregivers was 28–69years; majority were female (17). Caregivers hadlittle knowledge on mental disorders;only 3 related the vignette to a mental problem andattributed itto: improper upbringing, violence, poverty and bereavement. Five adolescents identified vignettes as portraying mental disorders caused by: ill-health of parents, bereavement, child abuse, discrimination, HIV and poverty. Caregivers are not knowledgeable about behavioural and emotional challenges in HIV-positive children/adolescents. Mental health literacy programmes at HIV care clinics are essential to enhance treatment-seeking for mental health

    Pole structure of the Hamiltonian ζ\zeta-function for a singular potential

    We study the pole structure of the ζ\zeta-function associated to the Hamiltonian HH of a quantum mechanical particle living in the half-line R+\mathbf{R}^+, subject to the singular potential gx−2+x2g x^{-2}+x^2. We show that HH admits nontrivial self-adjoint extensions (SAE) in a given range of values of the parameter gg. The ζ\zeta-functions of these operators present poles which depend on gg and, in general, do not coincide with half an integer (they can even be irrational).     Subcellular organization of UBE3A in human cerebral cortex.

    BackgroundLoss of UBE3A causes Angelman syndrome, whereas excess UBE3A activity appears to increase the risk for autism. Despite this powerful association with neurodevelopmental disorders, there is still much to be learned about UBE3A, including its cellular and subcellular organization in the human brain. The issue is important, since UBE3A's localization is integral to its function.MethodsWe used light and electron microscopic immunohistochemistry to study the cellular and subcellular distribution of UBE3A in the adult human cerebral cortex. Experiments were performed on multiple tissue sources, but our results focused on optimally preserved material, using surgically resected human temporal cortex of high ultrastructural quality from nine individuals.ResultsWe demonstrate that UBE3A is expressed in both glutamatergic and GABAergic neurons, and to a lesser extent in glial cells. We find that UBE3A in neurons has a non-uniform subcellular distribution. In somata, UBE3A preferentially concentrates in euchromatin-rich domains within the nucleus. Electron microscopy reveals that labeling concentrates in the head and neck of dendritic spines and is excluded from the PSD. Strongest labeling within the neuropil was found in axon terminals.ConclusionsBy highlighting the subcellular compartments in which UBE3A is likely to function in the human neocortex, our data provide insight into the diverse functional capacities of this E3 ligase. These anatomical data may help to elucidate the role of UBE3A in Angelman syndrome and autism spectrum disorder

    Entropy, Dynamics and Instantaneous Normal Modes in a Random Energy Model

    It is shown that the fraction f of imaginary frequency instantaneous normal modes (INM) may be defined and calculated in a random energy model(REM) of liquids. The configurational entropy S and the averaged hopping rate among the states R are also obtained and related to f, with the results R~f and S=a+b*ln(f). The proportionality between R and f is the basis of existing INM theories of diffusion, so the REM further confirms their validity. A link to S opens new avenues for introducing INM into dynamical theories. Liquid 'states' are usually defined by assigning a configuration to the minimum to which it will drain, but the REM naturally treats saddle-barriers on the same footing as minima, which may be a better mapping of the continuum of configurations to discrete states. Requirements of a detailed REM description of liquids are discussed

    Honey bee foraging distance depends on month and forage type

    To investigate the distances at which honey bee foragers collect nectar and pollen, we analysed 5,484 decoded waggle dances made to natural forage sites to determine monthly foraging distance for each forage type. Firstly, we found significantly fewer overall dances made for pollen (16.8 %) than for non-pollen, presumably nectar (83.2 %; P < 2.2 × 10−23). When we analysed distance against month and forage type, there was a significant interaction between the two factors, which demonstrates that in some months, one forage type is collected at farther distances, but this would reverse in other months. Overall, these data suggest that distance, as a proxy for forage availability, is not significantly and consistently driven by need for one type of forage over the other
