The online inverted classroom model (oICM): a blueprint to adapt the inverted classroom to an online learning setting in medical and health education [version 2]

This article was migrated. The article was marked as recommended. The idea of this paper is to offer a blueprint, to guide educators setting up a complete digital teaching scenario according to the latest insights of educational research. The COVID-19 pandemic forced higher education institutions all around the world to radically shift their curricula from a mix of face-to-face and remote teaching methods to a fully remote curriculum. Though challenging, this time provides opportunities to implement new educational methods and to improve the quality of digital teaching. The concept of the inverted classroom was modified to meet the special needs of the new online settings. The proposed online Inverted Classroom Model (oICM) includes the following phases: (1) pre-phase, (2) self-learning-phase, (3) synchronous online phase, (4) transfer-phase, and (5) evaluation. Recommendations and potential tools are provided for each phase. The oICM is an innovative and easy to use approach to shape digital teaching and learning processes during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This blueprint is developed by the committee “Digitalization” of the German Association for Medical Education (GMA), mainly for educators who are familiar with the Inverted Classroom Model (ICM) or similar blended learning formats

Needs and Research Priorities for Young People with Spinal Cord Lesion or Spina Bifida and Their Caregivers: A National Survey in Switzerland within the PEPSCI Collaboration.

The aim of this study was to describe the needs and research priorities of Swiss children/adolescents and young adults (from here, "young people") with spinal cord injury/disorder (SCI/D) or spina bifida (SB) and their parents in the health and life domains as part of the international Pan-European Pediatric Spinal Cord Injury (PEPSCI) collaboration. Surveys included queries about the satisfaction, importance, research priorities, quality of life (QoL), and characteristics of the young people. Fifty-three surveys with corresponding parent-proxy reports were collected between April and November 2019. The self-report QoL sum scores from young people with SCI/D and SB were 77% and 73%, respectively. Parent-proxy report QoL sum scores were lower, with 70% scores for parents of young people with SCI/D and 64% scores for parents of young people with SB. "Having fun", "relation to family members", and "physical functioning" were found to be highly important for all young people. "Physical functioning", "prevention of pressure injuries", "general health", and "bowel management" received the highest scores for research priority in at least one of the subgroups. As parents tend to underestimate the QoL of their children and young people prioritized research topics differently, both young peoples' and caregivers' perspectives should be included in the selection of research topics

The Oxysterol Synthesising Enzyme CH25H Contributes to the Development of Intestinal Fibrosis

Intestinal fibrosis and stenosis are common complications of Crohn's disease [CD], frequently requiring surgery. Anti-inflammatory strategies can only partially prevent fibrosis; hence, anti-fibrotic therapies remain an unmet clinical need. Oxysterols are oxidised cholesterol derivatives with important roles in various biological processes. The enzyme cholesterol 25-hydroxylase [CH25H] converts cholesterol to 25-hydroxycholesterol [25-HC], which modulates immune responses and oxidative stress. In human intestinal samples from CD patients, we found a strong correlation of CH25H mRNA expression with the expression of fibrosis markers. We demonstrate reduced intestinal fibrosis in mice deficient for the CH25H enzyme, using the sodium dextran sulphate [DSS]-induced chronic colitis model. Additionally, using a heterotopic transplantation model of intestinal fibrosis, we demonstrate reduced collagen deposition and lower concentrations of hydroxyproline in CH25H knockouts. In the heterotopic transplant model, CH25H was expressed in fibroblasts. Taken together, our findings indicate an involvement of oxysterol synthesis in the pathogenesis of intestinal fibrosis

Performance of the New FlashCam-based Camera in the 28\,m Telescope of H.E.S.S

In October 2019, the central 28 m telescope of the H.E.S.S. experiment has been upgraded with a new camera. The camera is based on the FlashCam design which has been developed in view of a possible future implementation in the Medium-Sized Telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), with emphasis on cost and performance optimization and on reliability. The fully digital design of the trigger and readout system makes it possible to operate the camera at high event rates and to precisely adjust and understand the trigger system. The novel design of the front-end electronics achieves a dynamic range of over 3,000 photoelectrons with only one electronics readout circuit per pixel. Here we report on the performance parameters of the camera obtained during the first year of operation in the field, including operational stability and optimization of calibration algorithms.Comment: Proceedings of the 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2021

A Roadmap for HEP Software and Computing R&D for the 2020s

Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. In this spirit, this white paper describes the R&D activities required to prepare for this software upgrade.Peer reviewe
