BACKGROUND: The quantification of the main carbohydrates present in strawberry juices enriched with inulin and fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and preserved by non-thermal techniques (vanillin and ultrasound) were studied, as well as the evolution of these compounds and their relationship with fungal deterioration during 14 days of refrigerated storage. RESULTS: A simple and environmentally friendly analytical approach based on high performance liquid chromatography with reflection index detector was developed for simultaneous determination of inulin, FOS and mono and disaccharides present in the juices. When analyzing the evolution of carbohydrates during storage, a direct relationship between the consumption of sucrose and the growth of yeasts and molds (main spoilage flora in strawberry) was observed, especially in untreated samples (control). On the contrary, no sucrose consumption was observed during storage of treated sample, thus demonstrating the efficiency of the non-thermal treatments to control yeasts and molds growth. In turn, inulin and FOS added to juices were not degraded during storage. CONCLUSION: The results demonstrated that non-thermal treatments are adequate to prevent the growth of deteriorative flora in strawberry juices and adding inulin and FOS can be a good strategy to functionalize them, improving their nutritional properties. In this article we discuss a unique aspect of modern football: the practices of "aliento" developed by sports fans during the match. During the game, they trigger a series of strategies with the objective to obtain a symbolic victory over the rival. This social competition is unique because it combines elements identified simultaneously with a tragic dimension and a comic dimension. Both coexist and blend to shape the expression of the fans. The latter, in turn, develop in harmony with different aspects of play, because of its creative, spontaneous and liberating quality. However, the action of the fans, that moves between coding and improvisation, are based on a worldview marked by a kind of masculinity. The fans defend a male model that appreciates the courage, power, strength and aggressiveness. This model has practical implications in terms of the expression of violence in contemporary football. The data underlying the analysis emerged from a participant's observation and audiovisual records from 15 different sport club divisions. This survey, which began in 2009 included intensive fieldwork with the fans of Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro, has now been completed with the fieldwork done in the Club Atlético Independiente between 2000 and 2008.Fil: Moreira, Maria Veronica Elizabeth. Seg1 Controls Eisosome Assembly and Shape

Eisosomes are stable domains at the plasma membrane of the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and have been proposed to function in endocytosis. Eisosomes are composed of two main cytoplasmic proteins, Pil1 and Lsp1, that form a scaffold around furrow-like plasma membrane invaginations. We show here that the poorly characterized eisosome protein Seg1/Ymr086w is important for eisosome biogenesis and architecture. Seg1 was required for efficient incorporation of Pil1 into eisosomes and the generation of normal plasma membrane furrows. Seg1 preceded Pil1 during eisosome formation and established a platform for the assembly of other eisosome components. This platform was further shaped and stabilized upon the arrival of Pil1 and Lsp1. Moreover, Seg1 abundance controlled the shape of eisosomes by determining their length. Similarly, the Schizosaccharomyces pombe Seg1-like protein Sle1 was necessary to generate the filamentous eisosomes present in fission yeast. The function of Seg1 in the stepwise biogenesis of eisosomes reveals striking architectural similarities between eisosomes in yeast and caveolae in mammals

Blocks adjustment -- reduction of bias and variance of detrended fluctuation analysis using Monte Carlo simulation

The length of minimal and maximal blocks equally distant on log-log scale versus fluctuation function considerably influences bias and variance of DFA. Through a number of extensive Monte Carlo simulations and different fractional Brownian motion/fractional Gaussian noise generators, we found the pair of minimal and maximal blocks that minimizes the sum of mean-squared error of estimated Hurst exponents for the series of length N=2^p, p=7,...,15. Sensitivity of DFA to sort-range correlations was examined using ARFIMA(p,d,q) generator. Due to the bias of the estimator for anti-persistent processes, we narrowed down the range of Hurst exponent to 1/2<=H< 1.Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Physica A: August 9, 200

Performance Characterization and Profiling of Chained CPU-bound Virtual Network Functions

    Get PDF
The increased demand for high-quality Internet connectivity resulting from the growing number of connected devices and advanced services has put significant strain on telecommunication networks. In response, cutting-edge technologies such as Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networking (SDN) have been introduced to transform network infrastructure. These innovative solutions offer dynamic, efficient, and easily manageable networks that surpass traditional approaches. To fully realize the benefits of NFV and maintain the performance level of specialized equipment, it is critical to assess the behavior of Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) and the impact of virtualization overhead. This paper delves into understanding how various factors such as resource allocation, consumption, and traffic load impact the performance of VNFs. We aim to provide a detailed analysis of these factors and develop analytical functions to accurately describe their impact. By testing VNFs on different testbeds, we identify the key parameters and trends, and develop models to generalize VNF behavior. Our results highlight the negative impact of resource saturation on performance and identify the CPU as the main bottleneck. We also propose a VNF profiling procedure as a solution to model the observed trends and test more complex VNFs deployment scenarios to evaluate the impact of interconnection, co-location, and NFV infrastructure on performance

Given the challenges that the so-called Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have presented for education in general, what has been the role of historical knowledge for the training of young workers? The thoughts on this issue are presented by this work through the analysis of a pedagogical action developed with students of integrated technical courses of the Industrial Technical College of Santa Maria (CTISM). This has resulted in the design of a digital portfolio containing approaches on technical achievements produced by social groups during the historical period commonly identified as modernity. The method used to discuss on the activity was the descriptive-analytic that can point out as reasons for understanding the formalized problem and, from there, indicate the possibilities of overcoming it. The theoretical approach chosen for the analysis was presented by Pinto (2005) for whom man, being a technical animal, is produced in the measure of his technical actions. Thus, the relevance of reflection lies in the possibility of pedagogical activity to contribute to the understanding of the technique as a product of human groups' social history. Specific detection of dengue and Zika virus antibodies using envelope proteins with mutations in the conserved fusion loop

Detection of antibodies is widely used for the diagnosis of infections with arthropod-borne flaviviruses including dengue (DENV) and Zika virus (ZIKV). Due to the emergence of ZIKV in areas endemic for DENV, massive co-circulation is observed and methods to specifically diagnose these infections and differentiate them from each other are mandatory. However, serological assays for flaviviruses in general, and for DENV and ZIKV in particular, are compromised by the high degree of similarities in their proteins which can lead to cross-reacting antibodies and false-positive test results. Cross-reacting flavivirus antibodies mainly target the highly conserved fusion loop (FL) domain in the viral envelope (E-) protein, and we and others have shown previously that recombinant E-proteins bearing FL-mutations strongly reduce cross-reactivity. Here we investigate whether such mutant E-proteins can be used to specifically detect antibodies against DENV and ZIKV in an ELISA-format. IgM antibodies against DENV and ZIKV virus were detected with 100% and 94.2% specificity and 90.7% and 87.5% sensitivity, respectively. For IgG the mutant E-proteins showed cross-reactivity, which was overcome by pre-incubation of the sera with the heterologous antigen. This resulted in specificities of 97.1% and 97.9% and in sensitivities of 100% and 100% for the DENV and ZIKV antigens, respectively. Our results suggest that E-proteins bearing mutations in the FL-domain have a high potential for the development of serological DENV and ZIKV tests with high specificity

This article tries identifying some directions the international migration of Brazilians to the United States of America from elements of the media agents. We tried to integrate geography and education reflections about the images produced by means of photographs, videos, news and the newspapers, on building sites and the movement of spatial knowledge in virtual spaces. The images of migration networks are established as part of a connection between-places, so that, it’s possible look for this images how spaces and landscapes that can be interpreted for a geography perspective. In this way, is elected the figure of migrants killed as object of our gaze and the analysis, given the impact of this social phenomenon and the simbolic meaning of restraining and curtailing that these images suggest.

Cultivable soil fungi community response to agricultural management and tillage system on temperate soil

In agricultural soils, fungi constitute most of the total microbial biomass in the environment contributing with more than 50% of the soil biomass. The fungi should be considered as a link in the production not only by their attributes but also for their potential pathogenicity on crops chains. We aim to determine in what extent the combination of management styles and tillage systems control specific cultivable soil fungal community structure in temperate fertile Petrocalcic Argiudoll soil in a field experiment. We measured soil fungal richness, abundance and diversity along a one-year experiment (2009–2010). The plots were subjected to different tillage systems (conventional vs. zero) combined with different agricultural management histories (pasture/agriculture rotation vs. intensive agriculture). The measures were performed every three months along a year in three replicated plots. Rotation with pastures and zero tillage stimulated the saprophytic soil fungi community in detriment of pathogens. The clearest dissimilarity was given by the seasons. The results obtained from assay suggested that the seasons effect was strongest that the management or tillage on the soil fungal community.EEA BarrowFil: Moreno, María Virginia.
