Aesthetic Regime Change: The Burnham Plans and US Landscape Imperialism in the Philippines
Taking Daniel Burnham’s 1904–1905 visit to the Philippines as a starting point, thisarticle examines the unrealized dream of US colonial officials to extend American empire through the production of space, particularly the aesthetic dimensions or what might be called a landscape vision of US empire. It offers a brief but intimate history of the making of the Burnham plans for Manila and Baguio so as to better understand how the ideological contradictions of the imperial moment were built into American colonial spaces, sometimes brutally but sometimes through aesthetic means in the formation of setting and landscape.Keywords: landscape • urban planning • Daniel H. Glutathione S-transferases YcYfetus and YcYc - kinetic and inhibitor studies relating to their glutathione peroxidase activities
The kinetic properties of the glutathione (GSH) peroxidase activities of GSH S-transferases YcYfetus and YcYc were compared. The catalytic efficiency of the fetal iso-enzyme with cumene hydroperoxide as substrate was approximately four times higher than the other. The effects of the non-substrate ligand rose-Bengal as well as the substrate ligands sulphobromophthalein and acrolein on the GSH peroxidase activity of these two iso-enzymes were also investigated. Depending on the ligand, the inhibition profiles of these two iso-enzymes when measured with either the peroxidase substrate, cumene hydroperoxide or the standard GSH S-transferase substrate 1:chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene were found to be either very similar (sulphobromophthalein) or markedly different (rose Bengal and acrolein). Significantly, the GSH peroxidase activity of the fetal iso-enzyme was far less susceptible to inhibition by the teratogen, acrolein, than that of the YcYc isoenzyme. It is therefore attractive to suggest that should a similar situation arise in vivo, this resistance to peroxidase inhibition may play a role in preventing the fetotoxic effects of acrolein

Huygens Titan Probe Trajectory Reconstruction Using Traditional Methods and the Program to Optimize Simulated Trajectories II
On January 14, 2005, ESA's Huygens probe separated from NASA's Cassini spacecraft, entered the Titan atmosphere and landed on its surface. As part of NASA Engineering Safety Center Independent Technical Assessment of the Huygens entry, descent, and landing, and an agreement with ESA, NASA provided results of all EDL analyses and associated findings to the Huygens project team prior to probe entry. In return, NASA was provided the flight data from the probe so that trajectory reconstruction could be done and simulation models assessed. Trajectory reconstruction of the Huygens entry probe at Titan was accomplished using two independent approaches: a traditional method and a POST2-based method. Results from both approaches are discussed in this paper
No Neutron Star Companion To The Lowest Mass SDSS White Dwarf
SDSS J091709.55+463821.8 (hereafter J0917+4638) is the lowest surface gravity
white dwarf (WD) currently known, with log g = 5.55 +/- 0.05 (M ~ 0.17 M_sun;
Kilic et al. 2007a,b). Such low-mass white dwarfs (LMWDs) are believed to
originate in binaries that evolve into WD/WD or WD/neutron star (NS) systems.
An optical search for J0917+4638's companion showed that it must be a compact
object with a mass >= 0.28 M_sun (Kilic 2007b). Here we report on Green Bank
Telescope 820 MHz and XMM-Newton X-ray observations of J0917+4638 intended to
uncover a potential NS companion to the LMWD. No convincing pulsar signal is
detected in our radio data. Our X-ray observation also failed to detect X-ray
emission from J0917+4638's companion, while we would have detected any of the
millisecond radio pulsars in 47 Tuc. We conclude that the companion is almost

Illumination in symbiotic binary stars: Non-LTE photoionization models. II. Wind case
We describe a non-LTE photoionization code to calculate the wind structure
and emergent spectrum of a red giant wind illuminated by the hot component of a
symbiotic binary system. We consider spherically symmetric winds with several
different velocity and temperature laws and derive predicted line fluxes as a
function of the red giant mass loss rate, \mdot. Our models generally match
observations of the symbiotic stars EG And and AG Peg for \mdot about 10^{-8}
\msunyr to 10^{-7} \msunyr. The optically thick cross- section of the red giant
wind as viewed from the hot component is a crucial parameter in these models.
Winds with cross-sections of 2--3 red giant radii reproduce the observed
fluxes, because the wind density is then high, about 10^9 cm^{-3}. Our models
favor winds with acceleration regions that either lie far from the red giant

The effect of postexercise carbohydrate and protein ingestion on bone metabolism
Purpose
To investigate the effect of feeding carbohydrate and protein (CHO+PRO), immediately or 2 h after an exhaustive run, on the bone turnover response in endurance runners.
Methods
10 men (age 28±5 y, height 1.74±0.05 m, body mass 69.7±6.3 kg) performed treadmill running at 75%VO2max, until exhaustion, on three occasions. Blood was collected before and immediately, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 24 h post-exercise, for measurement of β-CTX, P1NP, PTH, PO4, ACa and Ca2+. This was a randomised, counterbalanced, placebo-controlled, single-blinded, cross-over study. The three trials were; i) placebo (PLA), PLA solution was ingested immediately and 2 h post-exercise, ii) immediate feeding (IF), CHO+PRO (1.5 g.kgBM-1 dextrose and 0.5 g.kgBM-1 whey) were ingested immediately post-exercise and PLA 2 h post-exercise, and iii) delayed feeding (DF), PLA was ingested immediately post-exercise and CHO+PRO solution 2 h post-exercise. Data were analysed using repeated measures ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey’s HSD.
Results
At 1 and 2 h post-exercise, β-CTX concentrations were lower in the IF trial than the DF and PLA trials (P≤0.001). At 3 h post-exercise, β-CTX concentrations were higher in the PLA trial than the IF (P≤0.001) and DF trials (P=0.026). At 4 h post-exercise, β-CTX concentrations were lower in the DF trial than the IF (P=0.003) and PLA trials (P≤0.001). At 4 h post-exercise, P1NP was higher in the IF trial than in DF (P=0.026) and PLA trials (P=0.001). At 3 h post-exercise, PTH was higher in the IF trial than the DF trial (P≤0.001).
Conclusions
Following exhaustive running, immediate ingestion of CHO+PRO may be beneficial, as it decreases bone resorption marker concentrations and increases bone formation marker concentrations; creating a more positive bone turnover balance
