    X-ray Emission Models for Multipolar fields of Pre-Main Sequence Stars

    The large-scale magnetic fields of several pre-main sequence (PMS) stars have been observed to be simple and axisymmetric, dominated by tilted dipole and octupole components. The magnetic fields of other PMS stars are highly multipolar and dominantly non-axisymmetric. Observations suggest that the magnetic field complexity increases as PMS stars evolve from Hayashi to Henyey tracks in the Hertzsprung--Russell diagram. Independent observations have revealed that X-ray luminosity decreases with age during PMS evolution, with Henyey track PMS stars having lower fractional X-ray luminosities (LX/LL_\textrm{X}/L_*) compared to Hayashi track stars. We investigate how changes in the large-scale magnetic field topology of PMS stars influences coronal X-ray emission. We construct coronal models assuming pure axisymmetric multipole magnetic fields, and magnetic fields consisting of a dipole plus an octupole component only. We determine the closed coronal emitting volume, over which X-ray emitting plasma is confined, using a pressure balance argument. From the coronal volumes we determine X-ray luminosities. We find that LXL_\textrm{X} decreases as the degree \ell of the multipole field increases. For dipole plus octupole magnetic fields we find that LXL_\textrm{X} tends to decrease as the octupole component becomes more dominant. By fixing the stellar parameters at values appropriate for a solar mass PMS star, varying the magnetic field topology results in two orders of magnitude variation in LXL_\textrm{X}.     Facile Protocol for Water-Tolerant “Frustrated Lewis Pair”-Catalyzed Hydrogenation

    Despite rapid advances in the field of metal-free, “frustrated Lewis pair” (FLP)-catalyzed hydrogenation, the need for strictly anhydrous reaction conditions has hampered wide-scale uptake of this methodology. Herein, we report that, despite the generally perceived moisture sensitivity of FLPs, 1,4-dioxane solutions of B(C6F5)3 actually show appreciable moisture tolerance and can catalyze hydrogenation of a range of weakly basic substrates without the need for rigorously inert conditions. In particular, reactions can be performed directly in commercially available nonanhydrous solvents without subsequent drying or use of internal desiccants

    Compendium of NASA data base for the Global Tropospheric Experiment's Pacific Exploratory Mission West-A (PEM West-A)

    This compendium describes aircraft data that are available from NASA's Pacific Exploratory Mission West-A (PEM West-A). PEM West is a component of the International Global Atmospheric Chemistry's (IGAC) East Asia/North Pacific Regional Study (APARE) project. The PEM- West program encompassed two expeditions to study contrasting meteorological regimes in the Pacific. Objectives of PEM West are to investigate the atmospheric chemistry of ozone over the northwest Pacific -- natural budgets and the impact of anthropogenic sources; and to investigate sulfur chemistry -- continental versus marine sulfur sources. PEM West-A was conducted in September 1991 during which the predominance of tropospheric air is from the mid-Pacific (marine) regions, but (at times) is modified/mixed with Asian continental outflow. PEM West-B was conducted during February 1994, a period characterized by maximum continental outflow. PEM-B data (not included) will become public domain during the Summer of 1995. PEM West-A flight experiments were based at Japan, Hong Kong, and Guam. This document provides a representation of NASA DC-8 aircraft data that are available from NASA Langley's Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC), which include numerous data such as meteorological observations, modeling products, results from surface studies, satellite observations, and sonde releases

    The multipolar magnetic fields of accreting pre-main-sequence stars:B at the inner disk, B along the accretion flow, and B at the accretion shock

    Zeeman-Doppler imaging studies have revealed the complexity of the large-scale magnetic fields of accreting pre-main-sequence stars. All have multipolar magnetic fields with the octupole component being the dominant field mode for many of the stars studied thusfar. Young accreting stars with fully convective interiors often feature simple axisymmetric magnetic fields with dipole components of order a kilo-Gauss (at least those of mass 0.5M\gtrsim0.5\,{\rm M}_\odot), while those with substantially radiative interiors host more complex non-axisymmetric magnetic fields with dipole components of order a few 0.1 kilo-Gauss. Here, via several simple examples, we demonstrate that i). in most cases, the dipole component alone can be used to estimate the disk truncation radius (but little else); ii) due the presence of higher order magnetic field components, the field strength in the accretion spots is far in excess of that expected if a pure dipole magnetic field is assumed. (Fields of \sim6kG\,{\rm kG} have been measured in accretion spots.); iii) if such high field strengths are taken to be representative of the polar strength of a dipole magnetic field, the disk truncation radius would be overestimated. The effects of multipolar magnetic fields must be considered in both models of accretion flow and of accretion shocks...

    Mixed-method study of a conceptual model of evidence-based intervention sustainment across multiple public-sector service settings.

    BackgroundThis study examines sustainment of an EBI implemented in 11 United States service systems across two states, and delivered in 87 counties. The aims are to 1) determine the impact of state and county policies and contracting on EBI provision and sustainment; 2) investigate the role of public, private, and academic relationships and collaboration in long-term EBI sustainment; 3) assess organizational and provider factors that affect EBI reach/penetration, fidelity, and organizational sustainment climate; and 4) integrate findings through a collaborative process involving the investigative team, consultants, and system and community-based organization (CBO) stakeholders in order to further develop and refine a conceptual model of sustainment to guide future research and provide a resource for service systems to prepare for sustainment as the ultimate goal of the implementation process.MethodsA mixed-method prospective and retrospective design will be used. Semi-structured individual and group interviews will be used to collect information regarding influences on EBI sustainment including policies, attitudes, and practices; organizational factors and external policies affecting model implementation; involvement of or collaboration with other stakeholders; and outer- and inner-contextual supports that facilitate ongoing EBI sustainment. Document review (e.g., legislation, executive orders, regulations, monitoring data, annual reports, agendas and meeting minutes) will be used to examine the roles of state, county, and local policies in EBI sustainment. Quantitative measures will be collected via administrative data and web surveys to assess EBI reach/penetration, staff turnover, EBI model fidelity, organizational culture and climate, work attitudes, implementation leadership, sustainment climate, attitudes toward EBIs, program sustainment, and level of institutionalization. Hierarchical linear modeling will be used for quantitative analyses. Qualitative analyses will be tailored to each of the qualitative methods (e.g., document review, interviews). Qualitative and quantitative approaches will be integrated through an inclusive process that values stakeholder perspectives.DiscussionThe study of sustainment is critical to capitalizing on and benefiting from the time and fiscal investments in EBI implementation. Sustainment is also critical to realizing broad public health impact of EBI implementation.
