Internalizing symptoms and friendships in adolescence: considering the role of interpersonal behavior in rejection and contagion effects
The present research considered associations among internalizing symptoms, interpersonal behaviors, and friendship adjustment in a sample of 642 seventh and tenth graders. Effects of youthsâ internalizing symptoms on rejection were tested, as were contagion effects of internalizing symptoms within friendships. It was hypothesized that certain interpersonal behaviors would mediate both of these effects. Results indicated that depressed youth, especially girls, tended to report greater rejection by friends over nine months. Support was found for the depression contagion effect but not for the anxiety contagion effect. Little support was found for the hypothesis that interpersonal behaviors mediated these effects. Future research should explore whether some interpersonal behaviors are more likely to be exhibited in clinical samples and how these behaviors may have overlapping, additive, and/or interactive effects on socioemotional adjustment. Applied contributions of this research for the development of interpersonal interventions for youth with internalizing symptoms are discussed
Emotion regulation deficits and depression-related maladaptive interpersonal behaviours
Coyneâs interpersonal theory of depression posits that those with depressive symptoms engage in maladaptive interpersonal behaviours that, although intended to assuage distress, push away social supports and increase depressive symptoms (Coyne, 1976). Excessive reassurance seeking, negative feedback seeking, and conversational self-focus are three behaviours implicated in Coyneâs theory, yet their correlates- apart from depressive symptoms- are poorly understood. The current study considered the potential role of intrapersonal emotion regulation deficits as an additional vulnerability factor for these behaviours. Mediation models further tested whether linkages between emotion regulation deficits and maladaptive interpersonal behaviours helped to explain short-term increases in depressive symptoms, as further suggested by theory. Older adolescents (N = 291, M age = 18.9) completed self-report measures of emotion regulation deficits, depressive symptoms, and the three maladaptive interpersonal behaviours during an initial lab visit and again four weeks later. A series of multiple regression models suggested that emotion regulation difficulties are uniquely associated with each of the behaviours over and above the impact of depressive symptoms. Mediation analyses suggested that only excessive reassurance seeking mediated the association between initial emotion regulation deficits and increased depressive symptoms over time. The clinical implications of these findings are discussed
Girlsâ and boysâ problem talk: Implications for emotional closeness in friendships.
This research highlights the critical role of gender in the context of problem talk and social support in adolescentsâ friendships. Early- and middle-adolescentsâ (N = 314 friend dyads; Ms = 13.01 and 16.03 years) conversations about problems were studied using observation and a short-term longitudinal design. Mean-level gender differences emerged in that girls participated in problem talk more than boys and responded in a more positive and engaged manner to friendsâ statements about problems (e.g., by saying something supportive, asking a question) than did boys. Interestingly, boys used humor during problem talk more than girls. Despite mean-level differences, there were not gender differences in the functional significance of participating in problem talk and positive engaged responses in that these behaviors predicted increased friendship closeness for both boys and girls. In contrast, humor during problem talk predicted increased closeness only for boys, highlighting an understudied pathway to closeness in boysâ friendships
A Video-based End-to-end Pipeline for Non-nutritive Sucking Action Recognition and Segmentation in Young Infants
We present an end-to-end computer vision pipeline to detect non-nutritive
sucking (NNS) -- an infant sucking pattern with no nutrition delivered -- as a
potential biomarker for developmental delays, using off-the-shelf baby monitor
video footage. One barrier to clinical (or algorithmic) assessment of NNS stems
from its sparsity, requiring experts to wade through hours of footage to find
minutes of relevant activity. Our NNS activity segmentation algorithm solves
this problem by identifying periods of NNS with high certainty -- up to 94.0\%
average precision and 84.9\% average recall across 30 heterogeneous 60 s clips,
drawn from our manually annotated NNS clinical in-crib dataset of 183 hours of
overnight baby monitor footage from 19 infants. Our method is based on an
underlying NNS action recognition algorithm, which uses spatiotemporal deep
learning networks and infant-specific pose estimation, achieving 94.9\%
accuracy in binary classification of 960 2.5 s balanced NNS vs. non-NNS clips.
Tested on our second, independent, and public NNS in-the-wild dataset, NNS
recognition classification reaches 92.3\% accuracy, and NNS segmentation
achieves 90.8\% precision and 84.2\% recall
Rare and low-frequency coding variants alter human adult height
Height is a highly heritable, classic polygenic trait with ~700 common associated variants identified so far through genome - wide association studies . Here , we report 83 height - associated coding variants with lower minor allele frequenc ies ( range of 0.1 - 4.8% ) and effects of up to 2 16 cm /allele ( e.g. in IHH , STC2 , AR and CRISPLD2 ) , >10 times the average effect of common variants . In functional follow - up studies, rare height - increasing alleles of STC2 (+1 - 2 cm/allele) compromise d proteolytic inhibition of PAPP - A and increased cleavage of IGFBP - 4 in vitro , resulting in higher bioavailability of insulin - like growth factors . The se 83 height - associated variants overlap genes mutated in monogenic growth disorders and highlight new biological candidates ( e.g. ADAMTS3, IL11RA, NOX4 ) and pathways ( e.g . proteoglycan/ glycosaminoglycan synthesis ) involved in growth . Our results demonstrate that sufficiently large sample sizes can uncover rare and low - frequency variants of moderate to large effect associated with polygenic human phenotypes , and that these variants implicate relevant genes and pathways

Predicting Difficulties in Youthâs Friendships: Are Anxiety Symptoms as Damaging as Depressive Symptoms?
Youthâs friendships serve important functions in development; however, internalizing symptoms may undermine these relationships. Two studies are presented that examine the association of depressive and anxiety symptoms with friendship adjustment. Study 1 tested concurrent effects and Study 2 tested prospective effects over 6 months. Like past studies, depressive symptoms predicted greater problems in friendships. However, anxiety symptoms generally did not and, in some cases, actually predicted positive friendship adjustment. The results suggest that the friendships of youth with depressive symptoms should be targeted for intervention, but that incorporating the friendship strengths of anxious youth in interventions could be helpful for reducing these youthâs anxiety. The results also caution researchers studying the interplay between friendships and internalizing symptoms against collapsing across assessments of depressive and anxiety symptoms
