    Bean production and pest constraints in Latin America

    Beans are attacked by a large no. of plant pathogens and insect pests, many of which can reduce yields drastically. Farmers with small land holdings usually have limited resources but produce most of the beans in L.A. Control strategies feasible for these growers may be restricted to those strategies that do not require large cash inputs; hence breeding for resistance may be the most desirable alternative available. National and international bean production programs, must accurately identify yield constraints prevalent in specific producton regions to provide more efficient use of the large amount of manpower, research expenditure and time required to implement resistance breeding. Stability of resistant materials can be improved with an integrated control strategy consisting of resistance, cultural practices, chemicals and clean seed production for those diseases in which resistance does not confer immunity to infection. This Integrated control strategy must be adapted to specific regional problems. A more systematic collection of information is necessary to evaluate the costs and probability of success for control strategies so that the pathology, entomology and breeding reseach at the expt station is more applicable and quickly available to farmers. Los agricultores que poseen pequenas parcelas tienen generalmente ingresos muy limitados pero producen casi todo el frijol en America Latina. Las estrategias de control factibles para estos agricultores estan restringidas a aquellas medidas que no requieren grandes inversiones; de ahi que el mejoramiento por resistencia sea una de las alternativas disponibles mas deseables. Los programas nacionales e internacionales de produccion de frijol deben identificar en forma precisa los limitantes del rendimiento prevalentes en regiones productoras especificas, a fin de utilizar eficientemente el potencial humano, las inversiones en investigacion y el tiempo requerido para implantar el mejoramiento por resistencia. La estabilidad de los materiales resistentes se puede mejorar mediante una estrategia de control integrado que consiste en resistencia, practicas culturales, productos quimicos y produccion de semilla limpia para aquellas enfermedades para las cuales la resistencia no confiere inmunidad a la infeccion. Este sistema de control integrado debera adaptarse a los diferentes problemas especificos regionales. Se requiere una recoleccion mas sistematica de informacion para evaluar los costos y posibilidades de exito de los sistemas de control, con el objetivo de que la investigacion en patologia, entomologia y mejoramiento genetico en la estacion experimental sea mas util y rapidamente apicable por los agricultores.     Short-term fate of phytodetritus in sediments across the arabian sea oxygen minimum zone

    The short-term fate of phytodetritus was investigated across the Pakistan margin of the Arabian Sea at water depths ranging from 140 to 1850 m, encompassing the oxygen minimum zone (~100–1100 m). Phytodetritus sedimentation events were simulated by adding ~44 mmol 13C-labelled algal material per m2 to surface sediments in retrieved cores. Cores were incubated in the dark, at in situ temperature and oxygen concentrations. Overlying waters were sampled periodically, and cores were recovered and sampled (for organisms and sediments) after durations of two and five days. The labelled carbon was subsequently traced into bacterial lipids, foraminiferan and macrofaunal biomass, and dissolved organic and inorganic pools. The majority of the label (20 to 100%) was in most cases left unprocessed in the sediment at the surface. The largest pool of processed carbon was found to be respiration (0 to 25% of added carbon), recovered as dissolved inorganic carbon. Both temperature and oxygen were found to influence the rate of respiration. Macrofaunal influence was most pronounced at the lower part of the oxygen minimum zone where it contributed 11% to the processing of phytodetritus

    Nucleotide Frequencies in Human Genome and Fibonacci Numbers

    This work presents a mathematical model that establishes an interesting connection between nucleotide frequencies in human single-stranded DNA and the famous Fibonacci's numbers. The model relies on two assumptions. First, Chargaff's second parity rule should be valid, and, second, the nucleotide frequencies should approach limit values when the number of bases is sufficiently large. Under these two hypotheses, it is possible to predict the human nucleotide frequencies with accuracy. It is noteworthy, that the predicted values are solutions of an optimization problem, which is commonplace in many nature's phenomena.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure

    Changing of flight phenology and ecotype expansion of the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn.) in Hungary Part

    The studies aimed to acquire the widest possible information on the annual flight in Hungary of the European corn borer (ECB), Ostrinia nubilalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). The investigations used biomathematical (Part 1) and graphical (Part 2) evaluation to document changes in the individual population number.The study was conducted in Hungary using ECB moth capture records from the Plant Protection Information System black light trap system (1991–2004). We have drawn conclusions on the appearance of annual flights and the tendency of alterations in flight direction by means of light trap results in four different areas in Hungary. We calculated the flight peak quotients, the individual population numbers of the second flight peak, the distinctions of individual numbers of two flight peaks in this part.As previously published, alterations in flight direction of ECB flights began at different times in Hungary. In the current study, a gradual disappearance of the univoltine ecotype and gradual appearance of the bivoltine ecotype ECB in Hungary is confirmed by the data obtained between 1991–2004. Flight peak quotients and data concerning the second flight peak have confirmed change this process, too: the appearance of a second flight peak in Northwestern Hungary from 1995–1996 (FP = 1.27), the more significant appearance of flights in August in Western Hungary (FP = 1.05) and Northeastern Hungary (FP = 1.45), and a three and four times more individual number of the second flight peak in Southeastern Hungary (FP = 3.44). Flight peak quotients, individual population numbers of the second flight peak, the tendency towards a difference in population number of the two peaks, and size of increase of these values demonstrates the southeastern-northwestern presence of the bivoltine ecotype in Hungary

    A dimensionally continued Poisson summation formula

    We generalize the standard Poisson summation formula for lattices so that it operates on the level of theta series, allowing us to introduce noninteger dimension parameters (using the dimensionally continued Fourier transform). When combined with one of the proofs of the Jacobi imaginary transformation of theta functions that does not use the Poisson summation formula, our proof of this generalized Poisson summation formula also provides a new proof of the standard Poisson summation formula for dimensions greater than 2 (with appropriate hypotheses on the function being summed). In general, our methods work to establish the (Voronoi) summation formulae associated with functions satisfying (modular) transformations of the Jacobi imaginary type by means of a density argument (as opposed to the usual Mellin transform approach). In particular, we construct a family of generalized theta series from Jacobi theta functions from which these summation formulae can be obtained. This family contains several families of modular forms, but is significantly more general than any of them. Our result also relaxes several of the hypotheses in the standard statements of these summation formulae.     Charge conservation and time-varying speed of light

    It has been recently claimed that cosmologies with time dependent speed of light might solve some of the problems of the standard cosmological scenario, as well as inflationary scenarios. In this letter we show that most of these models, when analyzed in a consistent way, lead to large violations of charge conservation. Thus, they are severly constrained by experiment, including those where cc is a power of the scale factor and those whose source term is the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. In addition, early Universe scenarios with a sudden change of cc related to baryogenesis are discarded.Comment: 4 page

    Critical exponents and equation of state of the three-dimensional Heisenberg universality class

    We improve the theoretical estimates of the critical exponents for the three-dimensional Heisenberg universality class. We find gamma=1.3960(9), nu=0.7112(5), eta=0.0375(5), alpha=-0.1336(15), beta=0.3689(3), and delta=4.783(3). We consider an improved lattice phi^4 Hamiltonian with suppressed leading scaling corrections. Our results are obtained by combining Monte Carlo simulations based on finite-size scaling methods and high-temperature expansions. The critical exponents are computed from high-temperature expansions specialized to the phi^4 improved model. By the same technique we determine the coefficients of the small-magnetization expansion of the equation of state. This expansion is extended analytically by means of approximate parametric representations, obtaining the equation of state in the whole critical region.
