Ultralong Copper Phthalocyanine Nanowires with New Crystal Structure and Broad Optical Absorption
The development of molecular nanostructures plays a major role in emerging
organic electronic applications, as it leads to improved performance and is
compatible with our increasing need for miniaturisation. In particular,
nanowires have been obtained from solution or vapour phase and have displayed
high conductivity, or large interfacial areas in solar cells. In all cases
however, the crystal structure remains as in films or bulk, and the
exploitation of wires requires extensive post-growth manipulation as their
orientations are random. Here we report copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) nanowires
with diameters of 10-100 nm, high directionality and unprecedented aspect
ratios. We demonstrate that they adopt a new crystal phase, designated
eta-CuPc, where the molecules stack along the long axis. The resulting high
electronic overlap along the centimetre length stacks achieved in our wires
mediates antiferromagnetic couplings and broadens the optical absorption
spectrum. The ability to fabricate ultralong, flexible metal phthalocyanine
nanowires opens new possibilities for applications of these simple molecules
Interoperability and FAIRness through a novel combination of Web technologies
Data in the life sciences are extremely diverse and are stored in a broad spectrum of repositories ranging from those designed for particular data types (such as KEGG for pathway data or UniProt for protein data) to those that are general-purpose (such as FigShare, Zenodo, Dataverse or EUDAT). These data have widely different levels of sensitivity and security considerations. For example, clinical observations about genetic mutations in patients are highly sensitive, while observations of species diversity are generally not. The lack of uniformity in data models from one repository to another, and in the richness and availability of metadata descriptions, makes integration and analysis of these data a manual, time-consuming task with no scalability. Here we explore a set of resource-oriented Web design patterns for data discovery, accessibility, transformation, and integration that can be implemented by any general- or special-purpose repository as a means to assist users in finding and reusing their data holdings. We show that by using off-the-shelf technologies, interoperability can be achieved atthe level of an individual spreadsheet cell. We note that the behaviours of this architecture compare favourably to the desiderata defined by the FAIR Data Principles, and can therefore represent an exemplar implementation of those principles. The proposed interoperability design patterns may be used to improve discovery and integration of both new and legacy data, maximizing the utility of all scholarly outputs
Sonoluminescing air bubbles rectify argon
The dynamics of single bubble sonoluminescence (SBSL) strongly depends on the
percentage of inert gas within the bubble. We propose a theory for this
dependence, based on a combination of principles from sonochemistry and
hydrodynamic stability. The nitrogen and oxygen dissociation and subsequent
reaction to water soluble gases implies that strongly forced air bubbles
eventually consist of pure argon. Thus it is the partial argon (or any other
inert gas) pressure which is relevant for stability. The theory provides
quantitative explanations for many aspects of SBSL.Comment: 4 page
The Hardware of the ATLAS Pixel Detector Control System
The innermost part of the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) experiment will be a pixel detector, built of 1744 individual detector modules. To operate the modules, readout electronics, and other detector components, a complex power supply and control system is necessary. The specific powering and control requirements are described, along with the custom made components of our power supply and control systems. These include remotely programmable Regulator Stations, the power supply system for the optical transceivers, several monitoring units and the Interlock System
ELR510444 Inhibits Tumor Growth and Angiogenesis by Abrogating HIF Activity and Disrupting Microtubules in Renal Cell Carcinoma
Background: Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) is an attractive therapeutic target for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) as its high expression due to the loss of von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) promotes RCC progression. Considering this, we hypothesized that ELR510444, a novel orally available small molecule inhibitor of HIF activity, would reduce angiogenesis and possess significant activity in RCC. The mechanism of action and therapeutic efficacy of ELR510444 were investigated in in vitro and in vivo models of RCC. Principal Findings: ELR510444 decreased HIF-1a and HIF-2a levels, reduced RCC cell viability and clonogenic survival, and induced apoptosis. VHL-deficient RCC cells were more sensitive to ELR510444-mediated apoptosis and restoration of VHL promoted drug resistance. Higher concentrations of ELR51044 promoted apoptosis independently of VHL status, possibly due to the microtubule destabilizing properties of this agent. ELR510444 significantly reduced tumor burden in the 786-O and A498 RCC xenograft models. These effects were associated with increased necrosis and apoptosis and inhibition of angiogenesis. Conclusions: ELR510444 is a promising new HIF inhibitor that reduced RCC cell viability, induced apoptosis, and diminished tumor burden in RCC xenograft models. ELR510444 also destabilized microtubules suggesting that it possesses vascula

FAIR digital twins for data-intensive research
Although all the technical components supporting fully orchestrated Digital Twins (DT) currently exist, what remains missing is a conceptual clarification and analysis of a more generalized concept of a DT that is made FAIR, that is, universally machine actionable. This methodological overview is a first step toward this clarification. We present a review of previously developed semantic artifacts and how they may be used to compose a higher-order data model referred to here as a FAIR Digital Twin (FDT). We propose an architectural design to compose, store and reuse FDTs supporting data intensive research, with emphasis on privacy by design and their use in GDPR compliant open science.Analytical BioScience
Economic damages from on-going climate change imply deeper near-term emission cuts
Pathways toward limiting global warming to well below 2ââC, as used by the IPCC in the Fifth Assessment Report, do not consider the climate impacts already occurring below 2ââC. Here we show that accounting for such damages significantly increases the near-term ambition of transformation pathways. We use econometric estimates of climate damages on GDP growth and explicitly model the uncertainty in the persistence time of damages. The Integrated Assessment Model we use includes the climate system and mitigation technology detail required to derive near-term policies. We find an optimal carbon price of $115 per tonne of CO2 in 2030. The long-term persistence of damages, while highly uncertain, is a main driver of the near-term carbon price. Accounting for damages on economic growth increases the gap between the currently pledged nationally determined contributions and the welfare-optimal 2030 emissions by two thirds, compared to pathways considering the 2ââC limit only
Calibration and Characterization of the IceCube Photomultiplier Tube
Over 5,000 PMTs are being deployed at the South Pole to compose the IceCube
neutrino observatory. Many are placed deep in the ice to detect Cherenkov light
emitted by the products of high-energy neutrino interactions, and others are
frozen into tanks on the surface to detect particles from atmospheric cosmic
ray showers. IceCube is using the 10-inch diameter R7081-02 made by Hamamatsu
Photonics. This paper describes the laboratory characterization and calibration
of these PMTs before deployment. PMTs were illuminated with pulses ranging from
single photons to saturation level. Parameterizations are given for the single
photoelectron charge spectrum and the saturation behavior. Time resolution,
late pulses and afterpulses are characterized. Because the PMTs are relatively
large, the cathode sensitivity uniformity was measured. The absolute photon
detection efficiency was calibrated using Rayleigh-scattered photons from a
nitrogen laser. Measured characteristics are discussed in the context of their
relevance to IceCube event reconstruction and simulation efforts.Comment: 40 pages, 12 figure
