Exploring covalently bonded diamondoid particles with valence photoelectron spectroscopy
We investigated the valence electronic structure of diamondoid particles in
the gas phase, utilizing valence photoelectron spectroscopy. The samples were
singly or doubly covalently bonded dimers or trimers of the lower diamondoids.
Both the bond type and the combination of bonding partners are shown to affect
the overall electronic structure. For singly bonded particles, we observe a
small impact of the bond on the electronic structure, whereas for doubly bonded
particles, the connecting bond determines the electronic structure of the
highest occupied orbitals. In the singly bonded particles a superposition of
the bonding partner orbitals determines the overall electronic structure. The
experimental findings are supported by density functional theory computations
at the M06-2X/cc-pVDZ level of theory.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
The Role of Packing, Dispersion, Electrostatics, and Solvation in High‐Affinity Complexes of Cucurbit[ n ]urils with Uncharged Polar Guests
The rationalization of non-covalent binding trends is both of fundamental interest and provides new design concepts for biomimetic molecular systems. Cucurbit[n]urils (CBn) are known for a long time as the strongest synthetic binders for a wide range of (bio)organic compounds in water. However, their host-guest binding mechanism remains ambiguous despite their symmetric and simple macrocyclic structure and the wealth of literature reports. We herein report experimental thermodynamic binding parameters (ΔG, ΔH, TΔS) for CB7 and CB8 with a set of hydroxylated adamantanes, di-, and triamantanes as uncharged, rigid, and spherical/ellipsoidal guests. Binding geometries and binding energy decomposition were obtained from high-level theory computations. This study reveals that neither London dispersion interactions, nor electronic energies or entropic factors are decisive, selectivity-controlling factors for CBn complexes. In contrast, peculiar host-related solvation effects were identified as the major factor for rationalizing the unique behavior and record-affinity characteristics of cucurbit[n]urils

2-Unsubstituted Imidazole N-Oxides as Novel Precursors of Chiral 3-Alkoxyimidazol-2-ylidenes Derived from trans-1,2-Diaminocyclohexane and Other Chiral Amino Compounds
‘Desymmetrization’ of trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane by treatment with α,ω-dihalogenated alkylation reagents leads to mono-NH2 derivatives (‘primary-tertiary diamines’). Upon reaction with formaldehyde, these products formed monomeric formaldimines. Subsequently, reactions of the formaldimines with α-hydroxyiminoketones led to the corresponding 2-unsubstituted imidazole N-oxide derivatives, which were used here as new substrates for the in situ generation of chiral imidazol-2-ylidenes. Upon O-selective benzylation, new chiral imidazolium salts were obtained, which were deprotonated by treatment with triethylamine in the presence of elemental sulfur. Under these conditions, the intermediate imidazol-2-ylidenes were trapped by elemental sulfur, yielding the corresponding chiral non-enolizable imidazole-2-thiones in good yields. Analogous reaction sequences, starting with imidazole N-oxides derived from enantiopure primary amines, amino alcohols, and amino acids, leading to the corresponding 3-alkoxyimidazole-2-thiones were also studied
Do Docking Sites Persist Upon Fluorination? The Diadamantyl Ether-Aromatics Challenge for Rotational Spectroscopy and Theory
Fluorinated derivatives of biological molecules have proven to be highly efficient at modifying the biological activity of a given protein through changes in the stability and the kind of docking interactions. These interactions can be hindered or facilitated based on the hydrophilic/hydrophobic character of a particular protein region. Diadamantyl ether (C20 H30 O) possesses both kinds of docking sites, serving as a good template to model these important contacts with aromatic fluorinated counterparts. In this work, an experimental study on the structures of several complexes between diadamantyl ether and benzene as well as a series of fluorinated benzenes is reported to analyze the effect of H→F substitution on the interaction and structure of the resulting molecular clusters using rotational spectroscopy. All experimentally observed complexes are largely dominated by London dispersion interactions with the hydrogen-terminated surface areas of diadamantyl ether. Already single substitution of one hydrogen atom with fluorine changes the preferred docking site of the complexes. However, the overall contributions of the different intermolecular interactions are similar for the different complexes, contrary to previous studies focusing on the difference in interactions using fluorinated and non-fluorinated molecules
Aim. To develop preparative methods for functionalization of diamantane dimers. Results and discussion. The reaction of 1,1′-bisdiamantane with bromine and the subsequent hydrolysis gives 6-hydroxy-1,1′-bіsdіamantane with a yield of 56 %. The reactions of 4,4′-bisdiamantane with nitric acid or liquid bromine followed by hydrolysis leads to a mixture of hydroxy derivatives and 1,1′-dihydroxy-4,4′-bisdiamantane after isomerization in sulfuric acid (with a yield of 73 %). Thus, the reactivity of bisdiamantanes with electrophiles is determined by the higher stability of the carbocations in the medial positions of the cages as shown by DFT computations. Whereas medial bridgehead substitutions dominate in reactions of 4,4′-bisdiamantane with electrophiles, the arylation with benzene in the presence of tert-butyl bromide and aluminum chloride gives bis-apical derivative – 9,9’-diphenyl-4,4’-bisdiamantane. Experimental part. The structure of 6-hydroxy-1,1′-bіsdіamantane was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The substitution pattern in 1,1′-dihydroxy-4,4′-bisdamantane was confirmed by 2D-NMR spectra. The arylation of 4,4′-bisdiamantane with benzene proceeds as bis-apical substitution to give highly symmetric 9,9’-diphenyl-4,4’-bisdiamantane in 47 %. Conclusions. It has been shown that the medial bridgehead substitution dominates in the reactions of bisdiamantanes with strong electrophiles, and only the arylation of 4,4′-bisdiamantane proceeds as a bis-apical substitution. Received: 31.03.2020Revised: 05.05.2020Accepted: 29.05.202
