Closed for Business is an installation which creates an immersive environment that awards the curious. The inspiration for the exhibition came from local industry and human tendency. In likeliness of a defunct factory, the installation transforms the gallery into a dimly lit mysterious space. Using mostly objects found on local farms and in everyday households, a narrative takes shape. The question what happened here? looms as you investigate the space looking for clues. With a keen eye for observation, you navigate the room and stumble upon the office of a misguided -- and missing -- entrepreneur. As you internalizing the questionable activity in the office, the nature of this person becomes clear. Outside the office, another type of person is represented; an example of adolescence with graffiti, destruction of property, and lewd behavior. A connection between two types of people is made. Are they all that different? Closed for Business presents a series of clues for the curious minded, an installation that tells a story of two types of people -- adolescences and adults -- when no one is watching

Reality and Strong Reality in Finite Symplectic Groups

    Get PDF
When an element of a given group lies in the same conjugacy class as its inverse element, it is said to be real, and a conjugacy class with one real element must have all of its other elements real as well, so such a class is itself called real. In addition, a real element is called strongly real if the element which conjugates it to its inverse can be taken to be an involution, that is, an element whose square is the identity. We investigate the concepts of reality and strong reality in symplectic groups over a finite field, which have implications to conjectures on the representations of finite groups. In particular, we present progress in the direction of showing that all real classes of the projective symplectic group over a field of order q are strongly real

Frequency analysis of DAV pulsators using TESS data

The work presented in this thesis is designed to demonstrate the value and capacities of TESS to contribute to asteroseismology of compact pulsators. I find that TESS data are able to reproduce some of the results obtained by the ground by collaborations like the Whole Earth Telescope (WET) given its ability to observe a star nearly continuously for approximately 27 days. I also address some of the weaknesses of the TESS observations for these purposes, such as the CCD pixel size on the TESS cameras, long integration times, and the bandpass of the telescope\u27s detector. I examined four white dwarf pulsators and found that the MCT 0145-2211 and HE 0532-5605 lack long lifetime modes of pulsation. I place upper limits on the amplitudes of any pulsations in the TESS bandpass. The hottest of the pulsators studied, ZZ Ceti, appeared as expected (after accounting for the TESS bandpass) based on the many ground-based observations of the star. Ultimately the results of this work demonstrate the value of TESS as the next step forward in the field of asteroseismology

Patient-Centered Core Impacts Sets (PC-CIS): What They Are and What They Are Not

    Get PDF
Letter to the Editor We are writing regarding the Innovations in Pharmacy commentary entitled, “Evidentiary Standards for Patient-Centered Core Impact Value Claims.”(1) We thank Dr. Langley for commenting on the National Health Council’s work on patient-centered core impact sets (PC-CIS), an initiative spearheaded by the nonprofit organization and its membership with multi-stakeholder representation and input.(2-4) While we have tried to be clear and transparent about the intent of PC-CIS, the commentary made it apparent to us we need to (and will) do more to be explicit about what a PC-CIS is and is not, and its possible downstream uses.  We believe the PC-CIS concept was misrepresented in the commentary and want to provide clarification for readers so they can consider the merits of the initiative for themselves
