The funeral fiesta at the Science Museum

Todos santos, or día de los muertos est une des fêtes les plus connues et les plus visibles des cérémonies mexicaines qui commémorent le retour des morts auprès de leur famille grâce à la tentation provoquée lors de la préparation de leurs plats préférés. Cet article nous propose une observation ethnographique de la recomposition d’une exposition sur la nourriture au sein de la reconfiguration d’une exposition permanente du Deutsches Hygiene-Museum à Dresde. Cette transformation inclue une représentation audiovisuelle de todos santos. L’article s’appuie et analyse la participation de l’auteure au processus de conceptualisation en lien avec l’équipe des conservateurs dans le déroulement de sa modélisation. L’expérience filmique de todos santos, dans l’exposition, ainsi que les expériences sensorielles décontextualisées ou recontextualisées et la dimension de paternité sensorielle seront au cœur des enjeux et l’analyse du processus engagé.Todos santos, or día de los muertos, is one of the most important and globally most visible Mexican festivities celebrating the return of the dead to their families, through the enticement of their favorite foodstuffs. This article looks ethnographically at the re-design of an exhibition on food as part of the re-modeling of the permanent exhibition at the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum in Dresden. This re-design contains an audiovisual representation of todos santos. Based on the author’s participation in the process of planning the exhibition with the team of curators in the course of its design and filming todos santos in a Mexican community in Berlin for this museum exhibition, sensory re-and de- contextualization and the question of sensory authorship are discussed.Todos santos, o día de los muertos, es una de las fiestas mexicanas más importantes y visibles que celebra el retorno de los muertos a sus familias. Vertical Transmission of a Phylogenetically Complex Microbial Consortium in the Viviparous Sponge \u3cem\u3eIrcinia Felix\u3c/em\u3e

Many marine demosponges contain large amounts of phylogenetically complex yet highly sponge-specific microbial consortia within the mesohyl matrix, but little is known about how these microorganisms are acquired by their hosts. Settlement experiments were performed with the viviparous Caribbean demosponge Ircinia felix to investigate the role of larvae in the vertical transmission of the sponge-associated microbial community. Inspections by electron microscopy revealed large amounts of morphologically diverse microorganisms in the center of I. felix larvae, while the outer rim appeared to be devoid of microorganisms. In juveniles, microorganisms were found between densely packed sponge cells. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) was performed to compare the bacterial community profiles of adults, larvae, and juvenile sponges. Adults and larvae were highly similar in DGGE band numbers and banding patterns. Larvae released by the same adult individual contained highly similar DGGE banding patterns, whereas larvae released by different adult individuals showed slightly different DGGE banding patterns. Over 200 bands were excised, sequenced, and phylogenetically analyzed. The bacterial diversity of adult I. felix and its larvae was comparably high, while juveniles showed reduced diversity. In total, 13 vertically transmitted sequence clusters, hereafter termed “IF clusters,” that contained sequences from both the adult sponge and offspring (larvae and/or juveniles) were found. The IF clusters belonged to at least four different eubacterial phyla and one possibly novel eubacterial lineage. In summary, it could be shown that in I. felix, vertical transmission of microorganisms through the larvae is an important mechanism for the establishment of the sponge-microbe association

Beliefs about the malleability of professional skills and abilities:Development and validation of a scale

The concept of a professional skills and abilities mindset denotes beliefs that professional skills and abilities are either malleable (growth mindset) or are uncontrollable and difficult to change (fixed mindset). Based on the career construction theory, we argue that employees’ professional skills and abilities mindset represents an indicator of adaptive readiness that predicts career adaptability and adaptive responses in terms of learning and career engagement. Across four studies (total N = 709), we developed the 6-item professional skills and abilities mindset scale. Study 1 establishes a two-factor structure, satisfactory psychometric properties, and convergent validity. Studies 2 and 3 provide evidence of the criterion validity of the growth but not the fixed mindset subscale for career engagement and learning through career adaptability. Study 4 establishes moderate retest reliability across four weeks. This research establishes a previously neglected predictor of career-related resources and behaviors. Findings can inform vocational consulting and coaching

Responding to Open Access: How German Museums use Digital Content

Museums are expected to safeguard society’s cultural heritage while also making it publicly available to all. Recently, the digital transformation increased political and societal claims on museums to make their digital content openly available. This paper explores museums’ reactions to this claim and looks at how museums currently utilize their digital content. By analysing qualitative interviews with German museum officials we have found museums to follow four different types of strategies which are ‘Societal engagement’, ‘Safeguarding of heritage related knowledge’, ‘Scientific infrastructure’ and ‘marketing ends’. These were embedded in museums’ organizational identity and the prioritising of some of their tasks

We present a modification of this method that is capable of detecting mixed inclusions, i.e. both inclusions with a higher as well as inclusions with a lower conductivity than the background medium. In addition, we derive a new method to compute the conductivity inside inclusions after they have been localized

Die österreichische Fernsehlandschaft 2009

Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, herauszufinden, welche Unterhaltungsformate im österreichischen Fernsehen zu finden sind. Die Arbeit setzt sich mit verschiedenen theoretischen Zusammenhängen auseinander. Einen Teil bildet die Beschäftigung mit dem Begriff Unterhaltung außerdem wird die Konvergenzhypothese beschrieben und die Begriffe Kommerzialisierung und Ökonomisierung werden erläutert. Die medienrechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen sind ebenso von Bedeutung. Des Weiteren werden Studien zusammengefasst, die sich mit der publizistischen Vielfalt in Österreich und in Deutschland beschäftigen. Die konkreten Fragestellungen lauten, welchen Anteil Information und Unterhaltung haben, bzw. fiktionale und non-fiktionale Unterhaltungsformate. Außerdem woher diese Programme kommen, ob sie vorwiegend aus Österreich, aus Europa oder aus den USA stammen. Es wird auch gefragt, ob die Unterhaltungsangebote im österreichischen Fernsehen einen nationalen Bezug haben. Eine weitere Fragestellung ist auch der Zeitrahmen der Produktion, also wie alt die Programme, die ausgestrahlt werden, sind und ob die Filme Fernseh- oder Kinoproduktionen sind. Schließlich war von Bedeutung, welche Zielgruppen werden mit den Unterhaltungsprogrammen angesprochen. Die Methode, die für die Beantwortung der Fragestellung verwendet wird, ist die Programmstrukturanalyse. Für die Beantwortung der Fragen werden die österreichischen Fernsehsender beschrieben und es wird auch genauer auf die Unterhaltungsformate eingegangen. Die Ergebnisse werden anhand von Grafiken dargestellt.The intention of this analysis was to find out, which kind of entertainment programs there are to detect in the Austrian TV stations. The bases of this thesis are different theories of entertainment, commercialization, and convergence. Furthermore legal guidelines of the TV stations are important for the context as well as previous studys of media diversity in Austria and Germany. The concrete questions are, what is the share of information and entertainment in the TV programs and of fictional and non-fictional entertainment programs. Furthermore it was to find out, where the broadcast originates from (which country) and if there is a national reference to Austria. Another question was, how old the programs are, when they were produced. And if the films that are in the TV are productions for the TV or if they where in the cinema before. At last there is also the question what are the target audiences of the individual channels. The method of this thesis is the program structure analysis. Also part of the thesis is the description of the Austrian TV channels and their entertainment programs. The results are pictured by chats and diagrams

Analysing Ewald\u27s Method for the Evaluation of Green\u27s Functions for Periodic Media

Expressions for periodic Green\u27s functions for the Helmholtz equation in two and three dimensions are derived via Ewald\u27s method. The decay rate of the series occurring in these expressions is analysed and rigorous estimates for the remainder are derived when the series are truncated and replaced by finite sums. The effect of choosing a control parameter occurring in Ewald\u27s expressions is discussed and some recommendations for its choice are given based on the aforementioned estimates. We present various numerical examples for the resulting method for evaluating the Green\u27s functions. The results can also be carried over to evaluating the partial derivatives

Overexpression of the urokinase receptor splice variant uPAR-del4/5 in breast cancer cells affects cell adhesion and invasion in a dose-dependent manner and modulates transcription of tumor-associated genes

mRNA levels of the urokinase receptor splice variant uPAR-del4/5 are associated with prognosis in breast cancer. Its overexpression in cancer cells affects tumor biologically relevant processes. In the present study, individual breast cancer cell clones displaying low vs. high uPAR-del4/5 expression were analyzed demonstrating that uPAR-del4/5 leads to reduced cell adhesion and invasion in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) was found to be strongly upregulated in uPAR-del4/5 overexpressing compared to vector control cells. uPAR-del4/5 may thus play an important role in the regulation of the extracellular proteolytic network and, by this, influence the metastatic potential of breast cancer cells
