    Size Bias in Galaxy Surveys

    Only certain galaxies are included in surveys: those bright and large enough to be detectable as extended sources. Because gravitational lensing can make galaxies appear both brighter and larger, the presence of foreground inhomogeneities can scatter galaxies across not only magnitude cuts but also size cuts, changing the statistical properties of the resulting catalog. Here we explore this size bias, and how it combines with magnification bias to affect galaxy statistics. We demonstrate that photometric galaxy samples from current and upcoming surveys can be even more affected by size bias than by magnification bias.Comment: 4 pages; 3 figures.     Ab-initio calculations and ellipsometry measurements of the optical properties of the layered semiconductor In4Se3

    In this work, we present a thorough study of the optical properties of the layered orthorhombic compoundIn4Se3. The dielectric function—real and imaginary parts, the complex refraction index, the reflectivity, theabsorption coefficient, and the conductivity of In4Se3 were calculated with the inclusion of the spin-orbitinteraction, using an ab initio FP-LAPW method based on DFT. Also, generalized ellipsometry was employedfor more precise measurement of the anisotropic dielectric functions for polarization along crystal a, b, and caxes of orthorhombic absorbing In4Se3 single crystals cut approximately parallel to (100) at photon energiesfrom 0.76 to 3.1 eV. Our experimental results show a good agreement with our calculations. We discuss thelocation and nature of the main optical peaks appearing in the spectra. The obtained optical functions displaya rather anisotropic behavior, mainly in the infrared-visible region. Our results seem to be predictive to a highextension, given the scarce experimental information about its optical properties.Fil: Makinistian, Leonardo.     SK channel activation potentiates auranofin-induced cell death in glio- and neuroblastoma cells

    Brain tumours are among the deadliest tumours being highly resistant to currently available therapies. The proliferative behaviour of gliomas is strongly influenced by ion channel activity. Small-conductance calcium-activated potassium (SK/KCa) channels are a family of ion channels that are associated with cell proliferation and cell survival. A combined treatment of classical anti-cancer agents and pharmacological SK channel modulators has not been addressed yet. We used the gold-derivative auranofin to induce cancer cell death by targeting thioredoxin reductases in combination with CyPPA to activate SK channels in neuro- and glioblastoma cells. Combined treatment with auranofin and CyPPA induced massive mitochondrial damage and potentiated auranofin-induced toxicity in neuroblastoma cells in vitro. In particular, mitochondrial integrity, respiration and associated energy generation were impaired. These findings were recapitulated in patient-derived glioblastoma neurospheres yet not observed in non-cancerous HT22 cells. Taken together, integrating auranofin and SK channel openers to affect mitochondrial health was identified as a promising strategy to increase the effectiveness of anti-cancer agents and potentially overcome resistance

    AGN candidates in the VVV near-IR galaxy catalogue

This is the accepted manuscript version of an article which has been published in final form at https://doi.org/10.1093/mnras/stad490The goal of this work is to search for Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in the Galactic disc at very low latitudes with |b|< 2°. For this, we studied the five sources from the VVV near-infrared (IR) galaxy catalogue that have also WISE counterparts and present variability in the VIrac VAriable Classification Ensemble (VIVACE) catalogue. In the near-IR colour-colour diagrams, these objects have in general redder colours compared to the rest of the sources in the field. In the mid-IR ones, they are located in the AGN region, however, there is a source that presents the highest interstellar extinction and different mid-IR colours to be a young stellar object (YSO). We also studied the source variability using two different statistical methods. The fractional variability amplitude σrms ranges from 12.6 to 33.8, being in concordance with previous results found for type-1 AGNs. The slopes of the light curves are in the range (2.6 - 4.7) × 10-4 mag d-1, also in agreement with results reported on quasars variability. The combination of all these results suggest that four galaxies are type-1 AGN candidates, whereas the fifth source likely a YSO candidate.Peer reviewe

    Early colonization pattern of maize (Zea mays L. Poales, Poaceae) roots by Herbaspirillum seropedicae (Burkholderiales, Oxalobacteraceae)

    The bacterium Herbaspirillum seropedicae is an endophytic diazotroph found in several plants, including economically important poaceous species. However, the mechanisms involved in the interaction between H. seropedicae and these plants are not completely characterized. We investigated the attachment of Herbaspirillum to maize roots and the invasion of the roots by this bacterium using H. seropedicae strain SMR1 transformed with the suicide plasmid pUTKandsRed, which carries a mini-Tn5 transposon containing the gene for the Discosoma red fluorescent protein (Dsred) constitutively expressed together with the kanamycin resistance gene. Integration of the mini-Tn5 into the bacterial chromosome yielded the mutant H. seropedicae strain RAM4 which was capable of expressing Dsred and could be observed on and inside fresh maize root samples. Confocal microscopy of maize roots inoculated with H. seropedicae three days after germination showed that H. seropedicae cell were attached to the root surface 30 min after inoculation, were visible in the internal tissues after twenty-four hours and in the endodermis, the central cylinder and xylem after three days

    Magnetic Field Topology in Low-Mass Stars: Spectropolarimetric Observations of M Dwarfs

    (ABRIDGED) We report here our mapping of the magnetic field topology of the M4 dwarf G 164-31 (or Gl 490B), which is expected to be fully convective, based on time series data collected from 20 hours of observations spread over 3 successive nights with the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter. Our tomographic imaging technique applied to time series of rotationally modulated circularly polarized profiles reveals an axisymmetric large-scale poloidal magnetic field on the M4 dwarf. We then apply a synthetic spectrum fitting technique for measuring the average magnetic flux on the star. The flux measured in G 164-31 is Bf = 3.2+-0.4 kG, which is significantly greater than the average value of 0.68 kG determined from the imaging technique. The difference indicates that a significant fraction of the stellar magnetic energy is stored in small-scale structures at the surface of G 164-31. Our H_alpha emission light curve shows evidence for rotational modulation suggesting the presence of localized structure in the chromosphere of this M dwarf. The radius of the M4 dwarf derived from the rotational period and the projected equatorial velocity is at least 30% larger than that predicted from theoretical models. We argue that this discrepancy is likely primarily due to the young nature of G 164-31 rather than primarily due to magnetic field effects, indicating that age is an important factor which should be considered in the interpretation of this observational result.     The frequency of nuclear star-formation in Seyfert 2 galaxies

    We investigate the detectability of starburst signatures in the nuclear spectrum of Seyfert 2 galaxies by constructing spectral models in the wavelength range 3500-4100A, combining the spectrum of a bulge population (of age ~10Gyr) with that of younger stellar populations, spanning ages from ~3 Myr to 1 Gyr. We also construct models combining the bulge template with a power-law (PL) continuum, which is observed in some Seyfert 2's in polarized light, contributing with typically 10-40% of the flux at 4020A. We conclude that such continuum cannot be distinguished from that of a very young stellar population (age < 10 Myr), contributing with less than ~0.02% of the mass of the bulge. The models are compared with nuclear spectra - corresponding to a radius of 200-300 pc at the galaxy - of 20 Seyfert 2 galaxies, in which we specifically look for the signatures above of young to intermediate age stellar populations. We find them in ten galaxies, thus 50% of the sample. But only in six cases (30% of the sample) they can be attributed to young stars (age < 500 Myr): Mrk 1210, ESO 362-G8, NGC 5135, NGC 5643, NGC 7130 and NGC 7582. In the remaining four cases, the signatures are due to intermediate age stars (~1 Gyr). We find a tendency for the young stars to be found more frequently among the late type Seyfert's. This tendency is supported by a comparison between the equivalent widths (W) of absorption lines of the nuclear spectra of the Seyfert 2's with those of normal galaxies of the same Hubble type.Comment: 18 figures, revised version published in ApJ, December 2000, vol. 544, p. 74

    Petroleomics by ion mobility mass spectrometry: resolution and characterization of contaminants and additives in crude oils and petrofuels

Whereas direct analysis of a crude oil sample contaminated with demulsifiers by the classical ESI(+/-)-FTICR-MS petroleomic approach was unsatisfactory since it responds only with abundance and m/z, and ionization is impaired due to suppression of polar compounds of crude oil by additives likely used in petroleum industry, IM-MS enables mobility separation of ions, particularly of double bond equivalent (DBE) series for a giving CnX class providing separated spectra which are typical obtained either for the crude oil or the contaminants, even suffering of ion suppression or low ionization efficiency. The combination of improved IM resolution and high mass resolving power (40,000@400) of the QTOF instrument provides useful information on class (N, NO, NS, etc.), carbon number (C-n), and unsaturation (DBE) levels for crude oils, allowing one to infer geochemical properties from DBE trends that can be compared with IM-MS data.     23 High Redshift Supernovae from the IfA Deep Survey: Doubling the SN Sample at z>0.7

    We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of 23 high redshift supernovae spanning a range of z=0.34-1.03, 9 of which are unambiguously classified as Type Ia. These supernovae were discovered during the IfA Deep Survey, which began in September 2001 and observed a total of 2.5 square degrees to a depth of approximately m=25-26 in RIZ over 9-17 visits, typically every 1-3 weeks for nearly 5 months, with additional observations continuing until April 2002. We give a brief description of the survey motivations, observational strategy, and reduction process. This sample of 23 high-redshift supernovae includes 15 at z>0.7, doubling the published number of objects at these redshifts, and indicates that the evidence for acceleration of the universe is not due to a systematic effect proportional to redshift. In combination with the recent compilation of Tonry et al. (2003), we calculate cosmological parameter density contours which are consistent with the flat universe indicated by the CMB (Spergel et al. 2003). Adopting the constraint that Omega_total = 1.0, we obtain best-fit values of (Omega_m, Omega_Lambda)=(0.33, 0.67) using 22 SNe from this survey augmented by the literature compilation. We show that using the empty-beam model for gravitational lensing does not eliminate the need for Omega_Lambda > 0. Experience from this survey indicates great potential for similar large-scale surveys while also revealing the limitations of performing surveys for z>1 SNe from the ground.Comment: 67 pages, 12 figures, 12 tables, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
