Ga-NMR local susceptibility of the kagome-based magnet SrCr_9pGa_(12-9p)O_19. A high temperature study
We report a high- Ga-NMR study in the kagome-based antiferromagnetic
compound SrCrGaO (), and present a
refined mean-field analysis of the high T local NMR susceptibility of Cr
frustrated moments. We find that the intralayer kagome coupling is K,
and the interlayer coupling through non-kagome Cr moments is K. The ratio confirms the common belief that
the frustrated entity is a pyrochlore slab.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures Conference paper: Highly Frustrated Magnetism

Enhanced magnetocaloric effect in frustrated magnets
The magnetothermodynamics of strongly frustrated classical Heisenberg
antiferromagnets on kagome, garnet, and pyrochlore lattices is examined. The
field induced adiabatic temperature change (dT/dH)_S is significantly larger
for such systems compared to ordinary non-frustrated magnets and also exceeds
the cooling rate of an ideal paramagnet in a wide range of fields. An
enhancement of the magnetocaloric effect is related to presence of a
macroscopic number of soft modes in frustrated magnets below the saturation
field. Theoretical predictions are confirmed with extensive Monte Carlo
simulations.Comment: 7 page
Modeling relaxation and jamming in granular media
We introduce a stochastic microscopic model to investigate the jamming and
reorganization of grains induced by an object moving through a granular medium.
The model reproduces the experimentally observed periodic sawtooth fluctuations
in the jamming force and predicts the period and the power spectrum in terms of
the controllable physical parameters. It also predicts that the avalanche
sizes, defined as the number of displaced grains during a single advance of the
object, follow a power-law, , where the exponent is
independent of the physical parameters
Green's function approach to the magnetic properties of the kagome antiferromagnet
The Heisenberg antiferromagnet is studied on the kagom\'e lattice by
using a Green's function method based on an appropriate decoupling of the
equations of motion. Thermodynamic properties as well as spin-spin correlation
functions are obtained and characterize this system as a two-dimensional
quantum spin liquid. Spin-spin correlation functions decay exponentially with
distance down to low temperature and the calculated missing entropy at T=0 is
found to be . Within the present scheme, the specific heat exhibits
a single peak structure and a dependence at low temperature.Comment: 6 (two-column revtex4) pages, 5 ps figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Constructing chronologies in Viking Age Iceland: Increasing dating resolution using Bayesian approaches
yesPrecise chronologies underpin all aspects of archaeological interpretation and, in addition to improvements in scientific dating methods themselves, one of the most exciting recent developments has been the use of Bayesian statistical analysis to reinterpret existing information. Such approaches allow the integration of scientific dates, stratigraphy and typological data to provide chronologies with improved precision.
Settlement period sites in Iceland offer excellent opportunities to explore this approach, as many benefit from dated tephra layers and AMS radiocarbon dates. Whilst tephrochronology is widely used and can provide excellent chronological control, this method has limitations; the time span between tephra layers can be large and they are not always present. In order to investigate the improved precision available by integrating the scientific dates with the associated archaeological stratigraphy within a Bayesian framework, this research reanalyses the dating evidence from three recent large scale excavations of key Viking Age and medieval sites in Iceland; Aðalstræti, Hofstaðir and Sveigakot. The approach provides improved chronological precision for the dating of significant events within these sites, allowing a more nuanced understanding of occupation and abandonment. It also demonstrates the potential of incorporating dated typologies into chronological models and the use of models to propose sequences of activities where stratigraphic relationships are missing. Such outcomes have considerable potential in interpreting the archaeology of Iceland and can be applied more widely to sites with similar chronological constraints.British Academy (MD120020) awarded to C. Search for patterns by combining cosmic-ray energy and arrival directions at the Pierre Auger Observatory
Energy-dependent patterns in the arrival directions of cosmic rays are searched for using data of the Pierre Auger Observatory. We investigate local regions around the highest-energy cosmic rays with E > = 6×1019 eV by analyzing cosmic rays with energies above E > = 5×1018 eV arriving within an angular separation of approximately 15°. We characterize the energy distributions inside these regions by two independent methods, one searching for angular dependence of energy-energy correlations and one searching for collimation of energy along the local system of principal axes of the energy distribution. No significant patterns are found with this analysis. The comparison of these measurements with astrophysical scenarios can therefore be used to obtain constraints on related model parameters such as strength of cosmic-ray deflection and density of point sources
