Sustainably Ever After: Extending the Life of Bridal Gowns & Eliminating Fabric Waste through Zero Waste Pattern Cutting & Modular Design

    Get PDF
There are two realities when it comes to the white wedding gown. The first reality is that it is a powerful garment saturated with perceived tradition and symbolism. In this, how the bride looks is pivotal; the recent media frenzy over the style of Kate Middleton’s wedding gown in 2011 indicates that design is critical to the gown’s cultural value. The second reality is the negative impact of the fashion industry

Think-Pair-Share: An Active Learning Strategy for Apparel Pattern Drafting

    Get PDF
Many first year university fashion design students learning apparel pattern drafting (APD) endure a steep learning curve. An Active Learning approach, using the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) strategy may facilitate a more engaging and productive learning environment. There is a lack of literature that investigates the application of active learning in fashion design education. This study examined whether TPS activities could successfully engage students, facilitate learning, and contribute to a positive classroom experience in a beginner-level APD course

Unlocking Embodied knowledge for Better Design: An Introduction to Co-generative Mapping

    Get PDF
Clothing may be used to enhance well-being, yet for women size 22 and up, function is typically prioritized over aesthetics, and plus-size bodies are restricted from participating in normal fashion culture. This project explores a new methodology called co-generative mapping as a means to extract embodied knowledge from participants in order to collaboratively develop clothing that better meets functional, expressive, and aesthetic user needs. In this methodology, participants engage in body-mapping exercises to identify clothing needs, and participate in hands-on idea-generation activities designed to unlock personal lived experiences that may not be expressed as easily through traditional research and data collection methods. This research is the first phase of a larger project, wherein a series of three-dimensional dress forms will be produced based on participants\u27 body scans, and utilized in the production of better fitting and better designed plus-size clothing

Emotional Disposition Between Experience and Xenophobic Attitudes

    Get PDF
The study is based on the assumption that emotions represent a dependent, moderating, or independent variable of a person's everyday behavior. They are not just the result of social configurations, but also have an influence on perceptions and interpretations of social factors and thereby affect the external environment. The paper analyzes the ways in which emotional disposition plays a mediating role between interaction with immigrants and the development of xenophobic attitudes on the one hand and active discrimination against minorities on the other. Even though the findings show that such a relationship exists, the connection is weaker than was previously supposed. This may be due to the fact that (mostly rare) actual experiences with immigrants have less impact on the development of permanent emotional dispositions than have crucial biographical events. Hence we come to the conclusion that in order to understand the mediating process of emotions with regard to immigrants, it will be necessary to place more emphasis analyzing the situational causes of the relevant emotional dispositions

Paleogeography of the Upper Rhine Graben (URG) and the Swiss Molasse Basin (SMB) from Eocene to Pliocene

    Get PDF
Twenty paleogeographic maps are presented for Middle Eocene (Lutetian) to Late Pliocene times according to the stratigraphical data given in the companion paper by Berger et al. this volume. Following a first lacustrine-continental sedimentation during the Middle Eocene, two and locally three Rupelian transgressive events were identified with the first corresponding with the Early Rupelian Middle Pechelbronn beds and the second and third with the Late Rupelian ≪ Serie Grise ≫ (Fischschiefer and equivalents). During the Early Rupelian (Middle Pechelbronn beds), a connection between North Sea and URG is clearly demonstrated, but a general connection between North Sea, URG and Paratethys, via the Alpine sea, is proposed, but not proved, during the late Rupelian. Whereas in the southern URG, a major hiatus spans Early Aquitanian to Pliocene times, Early and Middle Miocene marine, brackish and freshwater facies occur in the northern URG and in the Molasse Basin (OMM, OSM); however, no marine connections between these basins could be demonstrated during this time. After the deposition of the molasse series, a very complex drainage pattern developed during the Late Miocene and Pliocene, with a clear connection to the Bresse Graben during the Piacenzian (Sundgau gravels). During the Late Miocene, Pliocene and Quaternary sedimentation persisted in the northern URG with hardly any interruptions. The present drainage pattern of the Rhine river (from Alpine area to the lower Rhine Embayment) was not established before the Early Pleistocen

Community Co-Design: From Magic Squares to Magic Dresses

    Get PDF
This project joined elementary, secondary, and postsecondary students with a textile museum, community cultural centre, and provincial science centre to collaborate on textile design and printing, as well as garment design, creation, and exhibition. While the design process centered on the concept of the magic square, each contribution was independent and progressive, and handed off to the next group like a baton in a relay race

An SO(10)XS-4 Scenario for Naturally Degenerate Neutrinos

The simplest scenario for the three known light neutrinos that fits the solar and atmospheric neutrino deficit and a mixed dark matter (MDM) picture of the universe requires them to be highly degenerate with mνm_{\nu} \sim 1 - 2 eV. We propose an SO(10) grand unified model with an S4_{4}-horizontal symmetry that leads naturally to such a scenario. An explicit numerical analysis of the quark and lepton sector of the model shows that it can lead to desired mass differences to fit all data only for the small angle non-adiabatic MSW solution to the solar neutrino puzzle.Comment: UMD-PP-94-95; (Latex file; 1 figure available on request

SO(10) grand unification model for degenerate neutrino masses

    Get PDF
We propose an SO(10) scheme where \neu masses can simultaneously explain the solar and atmospheric neutrino deficits, together with a hot dark matter component. In our scheme the νe, νμ, and ντ are approximately degenerate with a mass of about 2 eV, which can lead to an observable neutrinoless double beta decay rate. The model is based on a realization of the seesaw mechanism in which the main contribution to the light \neu masses is universal, due to a suitable SU(2) horizontal symmetry, while the splittings between \ne and \nm explain the solar \neu deficit and that between \nm and \nt explain the atmospheric \neu anomaly
