    High-Performance Energy-Efficient and Reliable Design of Spin-Transfer Torque Magnetic Memory

    In this dissertation new computing paradigms, architectures and design philosophy are proposed and evaluated for adopting the STT-MRAM technology as highly reliable, energy efficient and fast memory. For this purpose, a novel cross-layer framework from the cell-level all the way up to the system- and application-level has been developed. In these framework, the reliability issues are modeled accurately with appropriate fault models at different abstraction levels in order to analyze the overall failure rates of the entire memory and its Mean Time To Failure (MTTF) along with considering the temperature and process variation effects. Design-time, compile-time and run-time solutions have been provided to address the challenges associated with STT-MRAM. The effectiveness of the proposed solutions is demonstrated in extensive experiments that show significant improvements in comparison to state-of-the-art solutions, i.e. lower-power, higher-performance and more reliable STT-MRAM design

    Judicial enforceability of economic, social and cultural rights in Bangladesh : a critical evaluation

    The implementation of economic, social and cultural rights (esc rights) continues to pose uncertainties in the modern world. Given that many states constitutionally treat such rights as aspirational and not justiciable, it is difficult to enforce them judicially at the domestic level. Bangladesh has embodied these rights in Part ii of its Constitution as a social welfare goal of the State. This article takes Bangladesh as a case study and examines the international legal framework for the implementation of esc rights at the domestic level. Making a comparison with other jurisdictions, such as India and South Africa, the article examines the approach of the judiciary of Bangladesh (the Supreme Court) in giving effect to these rights. Lastly, the article argues that the court should devise appropriate and effective enforcement mechanisms for these rights

    Le coeur et les vaisseaux sanguins sont directement issus de l'endothélium et dépendent de sa fonction. Le coeur ne représente pas la seule force motrice de notre système circulatoire, la plupart des stratégies thérapeutiques actuelles des maladies cardiovasculaires sont encore focalisées sur le coeur, négligeant l'ensemble du système circulatoire et le système endothélial. Par exemple, le développement de Dispositifs d'Assistance Cardiaque (DAC) est influencé par le coeur, conçu pour suivre,obéir et doit être synchronisé avec un organe malade.De nombreux signaux de nature différente sont capables d activer les cellules endothéliales : les forces de cisaillement créées par le flux sanguin parallèle à la surface de la paroi des vaisseaux, mais également les forces perpendiculaires provoquées par l étirement de la paroi artérielle par les variations de la pression et la qualité cyclique de ces forces. L activation de cellules endothéliales est due à la pulsatilité du flux mais aussi à l action de substances vasoactives et des médiateurs de l inflammation.Dans notre travail de thèse, nous proposons une nouvelle approche thérapeutique,basée sur une révision fondamentale de l'ensemble du système circulatoire: exposer les défauts de la gestion courante des maladies cardiovasculaires (MCV). Notre nouveau concept se concentre sur la dynamique des flux sanguins pour stimuler,restaurer et maintenir la fonction endothéliale, et compris le coeur lui-même. Nous avons développé et évalué une nouvelle génération de DAC pulsatiles, testée in vitro et in vivo.Pendant le déroulement de cette thèse nous avons effectué les études suivantes:1. Etude d un prototype de cathéter pulsatile. Il est testé de manière isolée dans un modèle expérimental d ischémie aiguë du myocarde et dans un modèle d hypertension pulmonaire aiguë.2. Etude d un prototype de tube pulsatile à double lumière. Il est testé in-vitro dans un circuit de circulation extracorporelle, et in vivo comme assistance ventriculaire gauche.73. Etude d un prototype de combinaison pulsatile. Il est testé sur un modèle animal présentant une défaillance aiguë du ventricule droit. Des prototypes de masques et de pantalons pulsatiles sont en développement.En conclusion, notre approche est basée sur l activation de la fonction endothéliale plutôt qu en une assistance cardiaque directe. Ce concept permet une meilleure gestion thérapeutique des maladies circulatoires et cardio-pulmonaires.The Heart is still considered as the main organ to be dealt with, in case ofcardiovascular disease. Nevertheless, the heart is not the only driving force in ourcirculatory system. In fact, the heart and blood vessels are the direct issues of theendothelium and depend on its function. Moreover, almost all current therapeuticstrategies are still focusing on the heart and neglecting the entire circulatoryendothelialsystem. For example, development of cardiac assist devices (CAD) is stillrestrained by the heart, designed to follow, obey and must be synchronized with adiseased organ.Many "signals" of different nature are capable of activating endothelial cells: the shearforces created by the blood flow parallel to the surface of the vessel wall, but alsoforces caused by stretching perpendicular to the artery wall by the cyclic pressuregradient and the quality of these forces. The activation of endothelial cells is due tothat pressurized flow dynamic forces, but also to the action of vasoactive substancesand inflammatory mediators.In this thesis we are proposing a new therapeutic approach, based on a fundamentalrevision of the entire systems: exposing those defects of current management ofcardiovascular diseases (CVD). A concept that focuses on flow dynamics to stimulate,restore and maintain endothelial function including the heart itself. This includespreliminary results of new generations of pulsatile CAD that promote endothelial shearstress (ESS) enhancement. Devices prototypes were tested.During this thesis, pulsatile devices prototypes were tested in vivo, in vitro as well aswith pre-clinical volunteers as follow:1. A pulsatile catheter prototype was tested in 2 pediatric animal models (piglets) of:acute myocardial ischemia; and acute pulmonary arterial hypertension.2. A pulstile tube prototype was tested in vitro (mock circuit) and in vivo (piglets) as aleft ventricular assist device (ongoing).3. Pulsatile suit prototypes were tested: in vivo (piglets) for acute right ventricularfailure treatment.     The Level of Ischemic Modified Albumin (IMA) as Risk Marker for Cardio Vascular D isease (CVD) among some diabetic patients (type II) in Khartoum state -Sudan

    Background. Recent literature reports show large interest in ischemic modified albumin (IMA) biochemical marker for detection of myocardial injury. Special attention is focused in estimation of IMA test for the diagnosis and evaluation of myocardial ischemia as well as others acute coronary syndrome in emergency patients.Objective : evaluation of ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) in well controlled and uncontrolled patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and estimation of its connection with cardiovascular disease.Measurement thelevelof IMA asrisk marker forcardio vascular disease (CVD) in diabetic patients that arrivedtoemergency department with signs and symptoms of CVD.Methodology. 140 subjects enrolled in thisstudy ,70 diabetes mellitus patients with signs and symptoms of CVD, and other 70 apparently non diabetic healthy subjects' as controls, , the levels of biomarker IMA was measured as the risk marker ofCVDin controlled and uncontrolleddiabeticpatients with type2,the Diagnostic potential was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic analysis and their relationships were analyzed. This study was donein Shab Hospital, Khartoum.Period from 1st of February 2015 to October 2015.Results: The results showed that CVD were predominant among diabetic female 57 % and peaked at age 75.5 years among 40-75 year old. The IMA was significantly increase in diabetic patients when compare with normal healthy group with cut off value ( 0.97 IU/L ), and there is also significantly increase in IMA level in uncontrolled diabetic patients (Mean ± SD; 14.70 + 10.66) that presented with acute chest pain and havea signs and symptoms of cardiac ischemia when compared with the well-controlled diabetic patients(Mean ± SD; 3.74 + 3.68). controlled and uncontrolled diabetic patients were determined by the level of their HBA1c and comparison with the means of IMA level in their serum.Conclusions: increase IMA level in poor control and long stand diabetic patients could help to identify the higher risk for develop to CVD, and The most common complication such as suffering from local or systemic hypoxic conditions, as acute ischemic stroke, peripheral vascular disease.Keywords: Ischemia, Type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, Ischemic Modified Albumi

    Effect of sildenafil citrate on prediabetic and diabetic albino rats treated with metformin

    Diabetes Miletus (DM) is a global epidemic disease. It is estimated that there are already 415 million adults aged 20–79 years diabetics worldwide. Sildenafil citrate is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, which increases cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) and metformin (MET) is a biguanide used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes which increases peripheral insulin sensitivity. Aim: This study aims to assess the effect of sildenafil citrate and metformin on lipid profile and glycemic control in diabetic and prediabetic albino rats. Materials and methods: Adult male albino rats are used and divided into nine groups each group consists of 10 rats, diabetes is induced by feeding a high-fat diet (HFD) for an initial period of 2 weeks followed by a single intraperitoneal injection of (35 mg/kg) Streptozotocin. Prediabetes is induced by feeding (HFD) and glucose in water for a period of 2 weeks. Sildenafil was given in a dose of (5 &10 mg/kg/day orally for 4 weeks), metformin was given in a dose of (50 &100 mg/kg/day orally for 4 weeks) using oral gavages to normal healthy rats, diabetic and prediabetic rats. Blood samples were collected after 4 weeks of treatment in all experimental groups. Results: Combined administration of sildenafil and metformin on diabetic rats improving hyperglycemia, oxidative stress, and hyperlipidemia induced by streptozotocin than the administration of metformin or sildenafil alone. Conclusion: Sildenafil has beneficial effects against some diabetic complications. The present study showed that sildenafil with metformin has beneficial effects against diabetic complications
