Results from computational analysis of a mixed compression supersonic inlet
A numerical study was performed to simulate the critical flow through a supersonic inlet. This flow field has many phenomena such as shock waves, strong viscous effects, turbulent boundary layer development, boundary layer separations, and mass flow suction through the walls, (bleed). The computational tools used were two full Navier-Stokes (FNS) codes. The supersonic inlet that was analyzed is the Variable Diameter Centerbody, (VDC), inlet. This inlet is a candidate concept for the next generation supersonic involved effort in generating an efficient grid geometry and specifying boundary conditions, particularly in the bleed region and at the outflow boundary. Results for a critical inlet operation compare favorably to Method of Characteristics predictions and experimental data

Widowhood and cognitive decline in adults aged 50 and over: A systematic review and meta-analysis
While widowhood is known to be associated with poorer physical and mental health outcomes, studies examining the association of widowhood with cognition have yielded mixed results. This review aimed to elucidate the link between widowhood and cognitive decline.
A systematic search of Medline, Embase, PsycInfo, CINAHL and Scopus (until December 2020) was conducted to identify studies on the association between widowhood (vs. being married) and cognition in cognitively healthy adults aged 50 +.
A cross-sectional meta-analysis (of 10 studies; n = 24,668) found a significant association of widowhood with cognition (g = â 0.36, 95% CI [â 0.47, â 0.25], p = < 0.001). Meta-regressions suggested that study design, cognitive domain measured, sample age, difference in mean age between widowed and married groups, and study continent did not account for observed heterogeneity. A longitudinal meta-analysis (of 3 studies; n = 10,378) found that the âcontinually widowedâ group (from baseline to follow-up) showed significantly steeper declines in cognition compared to the âcontinually marriedâ group (g = â 0.15, 95%CI [â 0.19, â 0.10], p = < 0.001).
Findings indicate that widowhood may be a risk factor for cognitive decline. As there are no effective treatments for cognitive impairment, studying mechanisms by which widowhood might be associated with poorer cognition could inform prevention programs for those who have experienced spousal bereavement
Large-scale structure in a new deep IRAS galaxy redshift survey
We present here the first results from two recently completed, fully sampled redshift surveys comprising 3703 IRAS Faint Source Survey (FSS) galaxies. An unbiased counts-in-cells analysis finds a clustering strength in broad agreement with other recent redshift surveys and at odds with the standard cold dark matter model. We combine our data with those from the QDOT and 1.2 Jy surveys, producing a single estimate of the IRAS galaxy clustering strength. We compare the data with the power spectrum derived from a mixed dark matter universe. Direct comparison of the clustering strength seen in the IRAS samples with that seen in the APM-Stromlo survey suggests b_O/b_I=1.20+/-0.05 assuming a linear, scale independent biasing. We also perform a cell by cell comparison of our FSS-z sample with galaxies from the first CfA slice, testing the viability of a linear-biasing scheme linking the two. We are able to rule out models in which the FSS-z galaxies identically trace the CfA galaxies on scales 5-20h^{-1}Mpc. On scales of 5 and 10h^{-1}Mpc no linear-biasing model can be found relating the two samples. We argue that this result is expected since the CfA sample includes more elliptical galaxies which have different clustering properties from spirals. On scales of 20h^{-1}Mpc no linear-biasing model with b_O/b_I < 1.70 is acceptable. When comparing the FSS-z galaxies to the CfA spirals, however, the two populations trace the same structures within our uncertaintie
Moving Forward 21st Century Pathways to Strengthen the Ocean Science Workforce Through Graduate Education and Professional Development
The scope of emerging national and international ocean-related issues facing society demands that we develop broad perspectives on graduate education and training in the ocean sciences. A multifaceted ocean workforce and new kinds of intellectual partnerships are needed to address ocean science research priorities, strengthen our understanding of coupled human-natural ocean systems, engage and inform public policy and management decision making, and increase ocean literacy. Alumni from graduate programs in ocean sciences are following diverse career paths in academia, government, nongovernmental organizations, and industry, and thus can inform us about the diverse skills needed to succeed. The ocean science academic community should build on its current strengths (e.g., multidisciplinary and multi-institutional research and education, international partnerships), and capitalize on what some might view as limitations (e.g., remote, yet inviting, coastal campuses, diversity of ocean science programs), to become an incubator of innovation that will advance the field and strengthen graduate education and training. Partnerships within and among institutions with ocean-related programs, and with professional societies, employers, and others, can help us provide cutting-edge, relevant academic options, facilitate professional development, and proactively position graduates for career paths that reflect and address important societal needs
From supported membranes to tethered vesicles: lipid bilayers destabilisation at the main transition
We report results concerning the destabilisation of supported phospholipid
bilayers in a well-defined geometry. When heating up supported phospholipid
membranes deposited on highly hydrophilic glass slides from room temperature
(i.e. with lipids in the gel phase), unbinding was observed around the main gel
to fluid transition temperature of the lipids. It lead to the formation of
relatively monodisperse vesicles, of which most remained tethered to the
supported bilayer. We interpret these observations in terms of a sharp decrease
of the bending rigidity modulus in the transition region, combined
with a weak initial adhesion energy. On the basis of scaling arguments, we show
that our experimental findings are consistent with this hypothesis.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Correlated Anisotropies in the Cosmic Far-Infrared Background Detected by MIPS/Spitzer: Constraint on the Bias
We report the detection of correlated anisotropies in the Cosmic Far-Infrared
Background at 160 microns. We measure the power spectrum in the Spitzer/SWIRE
Lockman Hole field. It reveals unambiguously a strong excess above cirrus and
Poisson contributions, at spatial scales between 5 and 30 arcminutes,
interpreted as the signature of infrared galaxy clustering. Using our model of
infrared galaxy evolution we derive a linear bias b=1.74 \pm 0.16. It is a
factor 2 higher than the bias measured for the local IRAS galaxies. Our model
indicates that galaxies dominating the 160 microns correlated anisotropies are
at z~1. This implies that infrared galaxies at high redshifts are biased
tracers of mass, unlike in the local Universe.Comment: ApJ Letters, in pres
Two new topologically ordered glass phases of smectics confined in anisotropic random media
We show that smectic liquid crystals confined in_anisotropic_ porous
structures such as e.g.,_strained_ aerogel or aerosil exhibit two new glassy
phases. The strain both ensures the stability of these phases and determines
their nature. One type of strain induces an ``XY Bragg glass'', while the other
creates a novel, triaxially anisotropic ``m=1 Bragg glass''. The latter
exhibits anomalous elasticity, characterized by exponents that we calculate to
high precision. We predict the phase diagram for the system, and numerous other

Global monitoring of tropospheric water vapor with GPS radio occultation aboard CHAMP
The paper deals with application of GPS radio occultation (RO) measurements
aboard CHAMP for the retrieval of tropospheric water vapor profiles. The GPS RO
technique provides a powerful tool for atmospheric sounding which requires no
calibration, is not affected by clouds, aerosols or precipitation, and provides
an almost uniform global coverage. We briefly overview data processing and
retrieval of vertical refractivity, temperature and water vapor profiles from
GPS RO observations. CHAMP RO data are available since 2001 with up to 200 high
resolution atmospheric profiles per day. Global validation of CHAMP water vapor
profiles with radiosonde data reveals a bias of about 0.2 g/kg and a standard
deviation of less than 1 g/kg specific humidity in the lower troposphere. We
demonstrate potentials of CHAMP RO retrievals for monitoring the mean
tropospheric water vapor distribution on a global scale.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

This paper takes the form of a dialogue between the two authors, and is in two halves, the first half discursive and propositional, and the second half exemplifying the rhetorical, epistemological and metaphysical affordances of poetry in critically scrutinising the rhetoric, epistemology and metaphysics of educational management discourse.
Phipps and Saunders explore, through ideas and poems, how poetry can interrupt and/or illuminate dominant values in education and in educational research methods, such as:
