Labile and stable soil organic carbon and physical improvements using groundcovers in vineyards from central Spain

Mediterranean vineyards are usually managed with continuous tillage to maintain bare soils leading to low organic matter stocks and soil degradation. Vineyards are part of the Mediterranean culture, their management can be sustainable. We propose the setup of two types of groundcovers with the aim to assess their potential influence to improve soil properties. A field trial was performed to compare the effects of a seeded (Brachypodium distachyon) and spontaneous groundcovers, on a set of soil parameters, in comparison with the traditional tillage in four vineyards located in the center of Spain. Three years after the groundcovers establishment soil organic carbon stocks increased up to 1.62 and 3.18 Mg ha− 1for the seeded and the spontaneous groundcovers, respectively, compared to conventional tillage. Both labile and stable fractions improved their soil organic carbon content with the use of groundcovers, particularly the labile fraction. Moreover, soil structure and functional soil properties improved through better aggregate stability, pore connectivity and infiltration rates. The higher root biomass input of the spontaneous groundcovers derived in higher soil organic carbon increases and soil quality improvement. Consequently, under low rainfall conditions (< 400 mm per year) spontaneous vegetation, properly managed according to site conditions, is an effective soil management strategy to revert soil degradation and increase soil quality in Mediterranean vineyards

    Get PDF
With the rise of international cycling tourism, it is necessary to study the role that motivations and satisfaction play in explaining the probability of repeat participation. This study analyses a sample of 1098 participants in the “Mallorca312”, an international road cycling race. The results confirm the importance of motivations related to contemplation, lifestyle, social interaction, and the satisfaction dimension before, during and after service increase the probability of repeat participation. Furthermore, the findings contribute to the theory of the characterization and behaviour of cycling tourists, in addition to helping event organisers and destination management to improve their marketing strategies. Management implications This article provides management implications for enhancing marketing campaign effectiveness and repeat participation in sports tourism events. These suggestions will - Promote more sustainable tourism and maintain constant demand outside peak season, - Focus promotional campaigns on motivational dimensions that increase the likelihood of repeat participation, - Emphasize experiential aspects and social interactions in event organization, - Vary challenges and new routes to sustain participant interest. The study provides information to identify and attract the most profitable and potentially loyal market segments, thereby improving segmentation efficiency, promotional campaign effectiveness, and the event's economic performance.Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Málaga/CBU

Inclusión como aspecto esencial en organizaciones: religión y genéro

The future of industrial and labour relations is shaping up to be diverse and inclusive. One of the main elements is respect for religious choices, but this is not always the case, as we discuss in the article. Moreover, this inclusion and non-discrimination is obviously one that takes into account equality between men and women. The article explores how both aspects, depending on countries and religious orientations (or non-secularisation, if this is the case) impact on organisations. In addition to the legal perspective, we analyse how this translates into the development of countries.

Electrochemical sensors modified with combinations of sulfur containing phthalocyanines and capped gold nanoparticles: A study of the influence of the nature of the interaction between sensing materials

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaVoltametric sensors formed by the combination of a sulfur-substituted zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPcRS) and gold nanoparticles capped with tetraoctylammonium bromide (AuNPtOcBr) have been developed. The influence of the nature of the interaction between both components in the response towards catechol has been evaluated. Electrodes modified with a mixture of nanoparticles and phthalocyanine (AuNPtOcBr/ZnPcRS) show an increase in the intensity of the peak associated with the reduction of catechol. Electrodes modified with a covalent adduct-both component are linked through a thioether bond-(AuNPtOcBr-S-ZnPcR), show an increase in the intensity of the oxidation peak. Voltammograms registered at increasing scan rates show that charge transfer coefficients are different in both types of electrodes confirming that the kinetics of the electrochemical reaction is influenced by the nature of the interaction between both electrocatalytic materials. The limits of detection attained are 0.9 × 10−6 mol∙L−1 for the electrode modified with the mixture AuNPtOcBr/ZnPcRS and 1.3 × 10−7 mol∙L−1 for the electrode modified with the covalent adduct AuNPtOcBr-S-ZnPcR. These results indicate that the establishment of covalent bonds between nanoparticles and phthalocyanines can be a good strategy to obtain sensors with enhanced performance, improving the charge transfer rate and the detection limits of voltammetric sensors.Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad - Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (projects RTI2018-097990-B-I00 / CTQ2017-87102-R)Junta de Castilla y Leon - Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (project VA275P18

    Get PDF
[EN] Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is an inflammatory disease of the nose and paranasal sinuses that is often associated with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) in the most severe cases. As in other complex diseases, genetic factors are thought to play an important role in the risk and development of the disease. Environment may also modulate the epigenetic signature in affected patients. In the present systematic review, we aimed to compile all published data on genetic and epigenetic variations in CRSwNP since 2000. We found 104 articles, 24 of which were related to epigenetic studies. We identified more than 150 genetic variants in 99 genes involved in the pathogenesis of nasal polyposis. These were clustered into 8 main networks, linking genes involved in inflammation and immune response (eg, MHC), cytokine genes (eg, TNF), leukotriene metabolism, and the extracellular matrix. A total of 89 miRNAs were also identified; these are associated mainly with biological functions such as the cell cycle, inflammation, and the immune response. We propose a potential relationship between genes and the miRNAs identified that may open new lines of investigation. An in-depth knowledge of gene variants and epigenetic traits could help us to design more tailored treatment for patients with CRSwNP.Thematic Network of Cooperative Research in Health - RETICS (Red temática de investigación en salud Asma, Reacciones Adversas y Alérgicas, ARADYAL) of the Instituto de Salud Carlos II

Genetics and epigenetics of atopic dermatitis: An updated systematic review

    Get PDF
[EN]Background: Atopic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin disorder that affects up to 15-20% of the population and is characterized by recurrent eczematous lesions with intense itching. As a heterogeneous disease, multiple factors have been suggested to explain the nature of atopic dermatitis (AD), and its high prevalence makes it necessary to periodically compile and update the new information available. In this systematic review, the focus is set at the genetic and epigenetic studies carried out in the last years. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted in three scientific publication databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Scopus). The search was restricted to publications indexed from July 2016 to December 2019, and keywords related to atopic dermatitis genetics and epigenetics were used. Results: A total of 73 original papers met the inclusion criteria established, including 9 epigenetic studies. A total of 62 genes and 5 intergenic regions were described as associated with AD. Conclusion: Filaggrin (FLG) polymorphisms are confirmed as key genetic determinants for AD development, but also epigenetic regulation and other genes with functions mainly related to the immune system and extracellular matrix, reinforcing the notion of skin homeostasis breakage in AD.Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII); European Regional Development Fund; Network for Cooperative Research in Health, RETICS ARADyAL; Junta de Castilla y Leó
