Towards Convolutional Neural Networks for Heat Exchangers in Electrified Aircraft
Heat exchangers (HEX) are one of the most crucial components in the thermal management system of future electrified aircraft. To precisely model the convective heat transfer, high-fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are commonly carried out. However, due to their complexity, employing them in a design optimization loop is computationally expensive. This might lead to sub-optimal designs. One possible solution to solve this problem is to develop surrogate models to replace simulations with predictions. In recent trends, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have shown large potential in modeling external aerodynamic flows. By employing this approach for heat exchangers, a geometry-adaptive U-net is developed to predict the velocity, pressure and temperature distribution of the air flow over various HEX fin configurations directly from geometry and boundary conditions. The model is trained on the steady state results obtained from solving unsteady Navier-Stokes equations using the open-source simulation toolkit Phiflow. The trained model is able to predict the flow fields for unseen fin configurations with an accuracy of 95 %. Moreover, it estimates the scalar pressure drop and temperature difference with an error of only 4 %. Due to the notably reduced computational cost compared to CFD simulations, the surrogate model can prove useful in performing rapid heat exchanger optimization to minimize pressure drop and maximize heat transfer
Discovery of a Companion Candidate in the HD169142 Transition Disk and the Possibility of Multiple Planet Formation
We present L' and J-band high-contrast observations of HD169142, obtained
with the VLT/NACO AGPM vector vortex coronagraph and the Gemini Planet Imager,
respectively. A source located at 0".156+/-0".032 north of the host star
(PA=7.4+/-11.3 degrees) appears in the final reduced L' image. At the distance
of the star (~145 pc), this angular separation corresponds to a physical
separation of 22.7+/-4.7 AU, locating the source within the recently resolved
inner cavity of the transition disk. The source has a brightness of
L'=12.2+/-0.5 mag, whereas it is not detected in the J band (J>13.8 mag). If
its L' brightness arose solely from the photosphere of a companion and given
the J-L' color constraints, it would correspond to a 28-32 MJupiter object at
the age of the star, according to the COND models. Ongoing accretion activity
of the star suggests, however, that gas is left in the inner disk cavity from
which the companion could also be accreting. In this case the object could be
lower in mass and its luminosity enhanced by the accretion process and by a
circumplanetary disk. A lower mass object is more consistent with the observed
cavity width. Finally, the observations enable us to place an upper limit on
the L'-band flux of a second companion candidate orbiting in the disk annular
gap at ~50 AU, as suggested by millimeter observations. If the second companion
is also confirmed, HD169142 might be forming a planetary system, with at least
two companions opening gaps and possibly interacting with each other.Comment: Accepted to ApJL, see also Biller et al. 201

Knowledge management for systems biology a general and visually driven framework applied to translational medicine
Background: To enhance our understanding of complex biological systems like diseases we need to put all of the available data into context and use this to detect relations, pattern and rules which allow predictive hypotheses to be defined. Life science has become a data rich science with information about the behaviour of millions of entities like genes, chemical compounds, diseases, cell types and organs, which are organised in many different databases and/or spread throughout the literature. Existing knowledge such as genotype - phenotype relations or signal transduction pathways must be semantically integrated and dynamically organised into structured networks that are connected with clinical and experimental data. Different approaches to this challenge exist but so far none has proven entirely satisfactory. Results: To address this challenge we previously developed a generic knowledge management framework, BioXM , which allows the dynamic, graphic generation of domain specific knowledge representation models based on specific objects and their relations supporting annotations and ontologies. Here we demonstrate the utility of BioXM for knowledge management in systems biology as part of the EU FP6 BioBridge project on translational approaches to chronic diseases. From clinical and experimental data, text-mining results and public databases we generate a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) knowledge base and demonstrate its use by mining specific molecular networks together with integrated clinical and experimental data. Conclusions: We generate the first semantically integrated COPD specific public knowledge base and find that for the integration of clinical and experimental data with pre-existing knowledge the configuration based set-up enabled by BioXM reduced implementation time and effort for the knowledge base compared to similar systems implemented as classical software development projects. The knowledgebase enables the retrieval of sub-networks including protein-protein interaction, pathway, gene - disease and gene - compound data which are used for subsequent data analysis, modelling and simulation. Pre-structured queries and reports enhance usability; establishing their use in everyday clinical settings requires further simplification with a browser based interface which is currently under development
Prevalence of ADHD in accident victims: results of the PRADA study
Background: Recent research has shown an increased risk of accidents and injuries in ADHD patients, which could potentially be reduced by stimulant treatment. Therefore, the first aim of our study was to evaluate the prevalence of adult ADHD in a trauma surgery population. The second aim was to investigate accident mechanisms and circumstances which could be specific to ADHD patients, in comparison to the general population. Methods: We screened 905 accident victims for ADHD using the ASRS 18-item self-report questionnaire. The basic demographic data and circumstances of the accidents were also assessed. Results: Prevalence of adult ADHD was found to be 6.18% in our trauma surgery patient sample. ADHD accident victims reported significantly higher rates of distraction, stress and overconfidence in comparison to non-ADHD accident victims. Overconfidence and being in thoughts as causal mechanisms for the accidents remained significantly higher in ADHD patients after correction for multiple comparison. ADHD patients additionally reported a history of multiple accidents. Conclusion: The majority of ADHD patients in our sample had not previously been diagnosed and were therefore not receiving treatment. The results subsequently suggest that general ADHD screening in trauma surgery patients may be useful in preventing further accidents in ADHD patients. Furthermore, psychoeducation regarding specific causal accident mechanisms could be implemented in ADHD therapy to decrease accident incidence rat
Cadherin-Dependent Cell Morphology in an Epithelium: Constructing a Quantitative Dynamical Model
Cells in the Drosophila retina have well-defined morphologies that are attained during tissue morphogenesis. We present a computer simulation of the epithelial tissue in which the global interfacial energy between cells is minimized. Experimental data for both normal cells and mutant cells either lacking or misexpressing the adhesion protein N-cadherin can be explained by a simple model incorporating salient features of morphogenesis that include the timing of N-cadherin expression in cells and its temporal relationship to the remodeling of cell-cell contacts. The simulations reproduce the geometries of wild-type and mutant cells, distinguish features of cadherin dynamics, and emphasize the importance of adhesion protein biogenesis and its timing with respect to cell remodeling. The simulations also indicate that N-cadherin protein is recycled from inactive interfaces to active interfaces, thereby modulating adhesion strengths between cells
The JWST Early Release Science Program for Direct Observations of Exoplanetary Systems II: A 1 to 20 Micron Spectrum of the Planetary-Mass Companion VHS 1256-1257 b
We present the highest fidelity spectrum to date of a planetary-mass object.
VHS 1256 b is a 20 M widely separated (8\arcsec, a =
150 au), young, planetary-mass companion that shares photometric colors and
spectroscopic features with the directly imaged exoplanets HR 8799 c, d, and e.
As an L-to-T transition object, VHS 1256 b exists along the region of the
color-magnitude diagram where substellar atmospheres transition from cloudy to
clear. We observed VHS 1256~b with \textit{JWST}'s NIRSpec IFU and MIRI MRS
modes for coverage from 1 m to 20 m at resolutions of 1,000 -
3,700. Water, methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sodium, and potassium
are observed in several portions of the \textit{JWST} spectrum based on
comparisons from template brown dwarf spectra, molecular opacities, and
atmospheric models. The spectral shape of VHS 1256 b is influenced by
disequilibrium chemistry and clouds. We directly detect silicate clouds, the
first such detection reported for a planetary-mass companion.Comment: Accepted ApJL Iterations of spectra reduced by the ERS team are

The JWST Early Release Science Program for Direct Observations of Exoplanetary Systems IV: NIRISS Aperture Masking Interferometry Performance and Lessons Learned
We present a performance analysis for the aperture masking interferometry
(AMI) mode on board the James Webb Space Telescope Near Infrared Imager and
Slitless Spectrograph (JWST/NIRISS). Thanks to self-calibrating observables,
AMI accesses inner working angles down to and even within the classical
diffraction limit. The scientific potential of this mode has recently been
demonstrated by the Early Release Science (ERS) 1386 program with a deep search
for close-in companions in the HIP 65426 exoplanetary system. As part of ERS
1386, we use the same dataset to explore the random, static, and calibration
errors of NIRISS AMI observables. We compare the observed noise properties and
achievable contrast to theoretical predictions. We explore possible sources of
calibration errors, and show that differences in charge migration between the
observations of HIP 65426 and point-spread function calibration stars can
account for the achieved contrast curves. Lastly, we use self-calibration tests
to demonstrate that with adequate calibration, NIRISS AMI can reach contrast
levels of mag. These tests lead us to observation planning
recommendations and strongly motivate future studies aimed at producing
sophisticated calibration strategies taking these systematic effects into
account. This will unlock the unprecedented capabilities of JWST/NIRISS AMI,
with sensitivity to significantly colder, lower mass exoplanets than
ground-based setups at orbital separations inaccessible to JWST coronagraphy.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, submitted to AAS Journal
The \textit{JWST} Early Release Science Program for Direct Observations of Exoplanetary Systems III: Aperture Masking Interferometric Observations of the star HIP\,65426 at
We present aperture masking interferometry (AMI) observations of the star HIP
65426 at as a part of the \textit{JWST} Direct Imaging Early
Release Science (ERS) program obtained using the Near Infrared Imager and
Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) instrument. This mode provides access to very
small inner working angles (even separations slightly below the Michelson limit
of for an interferometer), which are inaccessible with the
classical inner working angles of the \textit{JWST} coronagraphs. When combined
with \textit{JWST}'s unprecedented infrared sensitivity, this mode has the
potential to probe a new portion of parameter space across a wide array of
astronomical observations. Using this mode, we are able to achieve a contrast
of \,mag relative to the host star at a separation
of {\sim}0.07\arcsec but detect no additional companions interior to the
known companion HIP\,65426\,b. Our observations thus rule out companions more
massive than 10{-}12\,\rm{M\textsubscript{Jup}} at separations
from HIP\,65426, a region out of reach of ground or
space-based coronagraphic imaging. These observations confirm that the AMI mode
on \textit{JWST} is sensitive to planetary mass companions orbiting at the
water frost line, even for more distant stars at 100\,pc. This result
will allow the planning and successful execution of future observations to
probe the inner regions of nearby stellar systems, opening essentially
unexplored parameter space.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, submitted to ApJ Letter
