oferecendo actividades flexíveis, evitando a informação definida à priori e estimulando a reflexão.
Explaining the Ergonomic Assessment of Human Movement in Industrial Contexts
Manufacturing processes are based on human labour and the symbiosis between human
operators and machines. The operators are required to follow predefined sequences
of movements. The operations carried out at assembly lines are repetitive, being identified
as a risk factor for the onset of musculoskeletal disorders.
Ergonomics plays a big role in preventing occupational diseases. Ergonomic risk
scores measure the overall risk exposure of operators however these methods still present
challenges: the scores are often associated to a given workstation, being agnostic to the
variability among operators. Observation methods are most often employed yet require a
significant amount of effort, preventing an accurate and continuous ergonomic evaluation
to the entire population of operators. Finally, the risk’s results are rendered as index
scores, hindering a more comprehensive interpretation by occupational physicians.
This dissertation developed a solution for automatic operator risk exposure in assembly
lines. Three main contributions were presented: (1) an upper limb and torso
motion tracking algorithm which relies on inertial sensors to estimate the orientation of
anatomical joints; (2) an adjusted ergonomic risk score; (3) an ergonomic risk explanation
approach based on the analysis of the angular risk factors. Throughout the research, two
experimental assessments were conducted: laboratory validation and field evaluation.
The laboratory tests enabled the creation of a movements’ dataset and used an optical
motion capture system as reference. The field evaluation dataset was acquired on an automotive
assembly line and serve as the basis for an ergonomic risk evaluation study. The
experimental results revealed that the proposed solution has the potential to be applied
in a real environment. Through direct measures, the ergonomic feedback is fastened, and
consequently, the evaluation can be extended to more operators, ultimately preventing,
in long-term, work-related injuries
New improvements on pesticide ecological risk assessment on the soil-water interface
Doutoramento em Engenharia Agronómica - Instituto Superior de AgronomiaImproving knowledge to evaluate and reduce pesticide impacts in the environment is a
present concern to achieve their sustainable use. With the aim of increasing ecological
relevance on the environmental risk assessment of pesticides (ERA), an integrated
approach was undertaken linking pesticide fate and effects on aquatic and terrestrial
non-target organisms under irrigated crop-based scenarios in Mediterranean realistic
conditions, for which there is a lack of studies. Pesticides fate and effects were assessed
by adopting an innovative approach embracing different levels of ERA complexity: a
refined first-tier with the use of natural soil in ecotoxicological testing, instead of the
conventional artificial soil; a refined higher-tier level performing simulations of cropbased
agricultural scenarios of maize, potato and onion crops, with the application of
the fungicides azoxystrobin and chlorothalonil and the insecticide ethoprophos, using a
new semi-field methodology; and an higher tier field study incorporating biological
interactions and dynamics of soil fauna communities and environmental factors that
determine the effects of pesticides in the field under realistic agricultural practices. This
study will increase the knowledge on ecological risks of pesticides under field situations
improving decision making towards a sustainable use of pesticides and ecological

A metodologia
observados. No presente trabalho serão abordadas quatro metodologias
modelos Gamma-Gamma, Log-Normal-Normal e Log-Normal-Normal
ApoAI e Fermentation.
The technology of DNA microarrays allows the monitoring of the expression
levels of thousands of genes simultaneously in a single experiment.
It has become a useful tool to support research in the elds
of Molecular Biology, Genetics and Medicine, helping scientists to understand
the patterns of gene activity in di erent cellular conditions.
In the eld of Statistics, the large amount of complex data emerging
from DNA microarray technologies has created new challenges and
stimulated the development of new methods.
In this dissertation, di erent statistical methodologies developed for
the detection of di erentially expressed genes in microarray experiments
were studied and applied on two experimental datasets. These
methodologies were, speci cally, Signi cance Analysis of Microarrays
(SAM) and various procedures based on empirical Bayes methods. The
SAM procedure is a permutation-based statistical technique which considers
gene speci c statistical tests and measures the strength of the
relationship between gene expression and condition types in order to
decide whether there are statistically signi cant di erences in gene expression
levels, controlling the false discovery rate. Empirical Bayes
procedures are bayesian methodologies in which the prior distribution
for the model parameters is estimated from the data. Herein, four different
theoretical models for the expression levels were included in the
empirical Bayes approach: linear model, Log-Normal-Normal model,
Gamma-Gamma model and, nally, the Log-Normal-Normal with modi
ed variance model.
Using R packages (namely, samr and both limma and EBarrays from
Bioconductor), those methodologies were applied on two real databases
designated ApoAI and Fermentation. The ApoAI database has been
largely studied in the specialized literature and it is aimed at identifying
genes with altered expression in mice whose Apo AI gene is not
functional. The Fermentation database was recently obtained at the
National Facility for DNA Microarray at the University of Aveiro, and
it comes from two colour DNA microarray experiment carried out to
distinguish yeast strains with good resistance to stress imposed by the
fermentation process.
The results generated with each methodology for each database were
analyzed and compared to obtain a list of di erentially expressed genes
commonly identi ed by methodologies applied

The person within: parents and professionals’ views about the practitioner’s role in a parenting program
Practitioners’ characteristics and actions influence the implementation of evidence-based programs, but little is known about the practitioner’s role in the implementation of parent-based programs. The present qualitative study is the first to explore the perceptions of parents and professionals regarding the practitioners’ characteristics and actions which influence the implementation of a parent program directed at children’s behavior problems. Using thematic analysis, data were examined from eight focus groups comprising 24 parents and 19 practitioners who have participated in the Incredible Years parent group program (IYPP). The analysis identified three groups of practitioners’ characteristics perceived to impact the implementation of the IYPP: inferred interpersonal characteristics (genuine interest; empathy and warmth; positive regard; humbleness); inferred intrapersonal characteristics (objectivity; flexibility; well-being; reflexiveness) and objective characteristics (similar age; being a parent; clinical professional background; professional experience with children and the IYPP). These personal characteristics are perceived as serving to underpin practitioners’ actions, and an integrated framework model is proposed where specific practitioners’ actions are understood in relation to personal characteristics. Inferred characteristics are perceived as determinants in the intervention process while objective characteristics are seen as facilitators of parent engagement in the earliest stages of intervention. Finally, most of the characteristics and actions perceived as relevant in this study are contemplated in the IYPP model; however, the practitioners’ intrapersonal well-being, self-reflexiveness and genuineness emerged as characteristics which may merit further consideration. The results from this study suggest that in the IYPP the person of the practitioner may indeed be worthy of more critical examination.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
This project consists of the sizing of a static model of an irrigation network to be used to water 27 ha grazing pasture of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinácea Schreb), to be installed in a farm in the centre-interior of Portugal (Castelo Branco; Idanha-a-Nova). The methodology followed for sizing the irrigation network was based on the characterization of water consumption, calculated by a soil water balance considering the water needs for the crop, and using the mathematic model ISAREG. This model is based on the procedure dictated by FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), where the definition of the physical structure of the irrigation network is made according to the principal components of the system (e.g. pumps, pipes and valves) and the establishment of operating rules to ensure the correct operation of the installation.
The land was divided into 8 sectors. Sprinkler irrigation of 25 mm with the time interval between successive irrigation of four days was selected. Therefore, two sectors will be irrigated daily, for 4 h each irrigation. Square patterned sprinklers were chosen and the pumping station was located at the highest elevation (220.5 m)

<0,1 mg/24h), respectivamente. Realizou terapêutica de suporte
e específi ca, com D-penicilamina, com evolução favorável.Acute copper poisoning is rare and frequently accidental. Nau-
seas, vomiting, diarrhoea and haemolytic anaemia are its usual
manifestations, while severe poisoning results in renal and /or
hepatic insuffi ciency and coma. The authors describe a clinical case of voluntary acute copper
sulphate poisoning manifested by gastrointestinal symptoms
(nauseas, vomiting of a green liquid and diarrhoea), hypotension, jaundice and mental dysfunction. The laboratory results revealed
a transfusion dependent haemolytic anaemia, renal dysfunction
(rise of blood urea nitrogen and creatinine, as well as haematuria)
and elevated serum and urine copper levels, reaching 2.6 mg/L
(0.7-1.4) and 1.1 mg/24h, (< 0.1 mg/24h). The patient was
treated with D-penicillamine with a favourable outcome
Swimming abilities of temperate pelagic fish larvae prove that they may control their dispersion in coastal areas
The Sense Acuity and Behavioral (SAAB) Hypothesis proposes that the swimming capabilities and sensorial acuity of temperate fish larvae allows them to find and swim towards coastal nursery areas, which are crucial for their recruitment. To gather further evidence to support this theory, it is necessary to understand how horizontal swimming capability varies along fish larvae ontogeny. Therefore, we studied the swimming capability of white seabream Diplodus sargus (Linnaeus, 1758) larvae along ontogeny, and their relationship with physiological condition. Thus, critical swimming speed (U-crit) and the distance swam (km) during endurance tests were determined for fish larvae from 15 to 55 days post-hatching (DPH), and their physiological condition (RNA, DNA and protein contents) was assessed. The critical swimming speed of white seabream larvae increased along ontogeny from 1.1 cm s(-1) (15 DPH) to 23 cm s(-1) (50 and 55 DPH), and the distance swam by larvae in the endurance experiments increased from 0.01 km (15 DPH) to 86.5 km (45 DPH). This finding supports one of the premises of the SAAB hypothesis, which proposes that fish larvae can influence their transport and distribution in coastal areas due to their swimming capabilities. The relationship between larvae's physiological condition and swimming capabilities were not evident in this study. Overall, this study provides critical information for understanding the link between population dynamics and connectivity with the management and conservation of fish stocks.Funding Agency

(Boophilus) annulatus, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) geigyi e Rhipicephalus sulcatus). As espécies do género
