ExoBike : mechanical component development

Muitas das vezes o processo de reabilitação é monótono e desmotivador devido à repetibilidade dos exercícios e falta de feedback ou ferramentas que permitam avaliar o progresso. Assim, tendo em conta que o exercício de bicicleta é muito utilizado para a reabilitação dos membros inferiores, foi criado o projeto ExoBike. De modo a combater tais fatores, a ExoBike consiste numa bicicleta equipada com sensores de força nos principais pontos de interação entre bicicleta e paciente. Assim é possível adquirir dados importantes para avaliar o progresso do paciente, bem como estabelecer metas e ajustar os exercícios conforme as necessidades do paciente. Alem desta componente de aquisição de dados, o projeto ExoBike engloba ainda uma vertente de realidade virtual, que junta com a componente de aquisição de dados, proporciona ao paciente uma experiência mais imersiva, tornando assim a prática de exercício para reabilitação mais divertida e motivadora. Este documento foca-se no desenvolvimento dos dispositivos mecânicos instalados na bicicleta para a aquisição dos dados do paciente. Para tal foi desenvolvido um selim capaz de analisar a postura do paciente, um guiador que caracteriza a força que o paciente realiza com os membros superiores, uns pedais capazes de analisar o movimento de pedalada e uns punhos que adquirem a força de preensão que o paciente é capaz de efetuar. Sendo que as metodologias de aquisição de dados dos dispositivos se baseiam em células de carga, extensometria elétrica por resistência e inteligência artificial. Os dispositivos foram desenvolvidos e otimizados com recurso a programas de desenho computacional, analisados através de métodos numéricos e analíticos, ensaiados através de prototipagem rápida com impressão 3D e produzidos com recurso a máquinas de fabrico subtrativo com controlo numérico. De modo a garantir o correto funcionamento dos dispositivos, estes foram sujeitos a uma serie de calibrações e testes funcionais com grupos de 3, 5 e 31 voluntários para corroborar as metodologias adotadas e avaliar as capacidades das mesmas. Sendo que os dipositivos indicaram uma correlação de 0.7, entre a postura do voluntario e a sua altura, e uma correlação elevada de 0.9 entre a massa do voluntario e a força exercida pelos membros inferiores. Entre outro tipo de correlações, os dipositivos foram ainda capazes de determinar, com uma fiabilidade 95%, o efeito de recalcamento psicológico quando os voluntários foram sujeitos a uma reação de defesa induzida nos membros inferiores. Feasibility evaluation of an RPA implementation in siemens healthineers internal controls

The present Working Project aims at studying the topic of Robot Process Automation (RPA) in a specific organizational context of a medical technology company. For this purpose, a time feasibility test was designed to help support the decision, as a first stage, of implementing the aforementioned technology in internal controls. In the end, the test was successfully applied for two internal controls that performed monthly, by the HUB for internal audit purposes. Although the fully operationalization of the RPA itself proved not to be possible during the project’s timespan, it is expected to occur in the approaching future

Review hops - bioactive compounds and their applications

Humulus lupulus L. it’s the scientific name of a perennial climbing plant of great importance because of its biocompounds of interest such as: organic acids, polyphenols and essential oils. The female inflorescences (cones) of hops glands secrete mainly lupulin. This is known worldwide as an essential raw material and flavoring agent in beer production. Phytochemical compounds from the plant such as xanthohumol, humulone, and lupulone have been used in trials for cosmetic application. Also the use of the plant has been reported for long time in traditional medicine, due to its properties, anti inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant among others. Leg Ulcers in Antiphospholipid Syndrome Secondary to Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Treated with Intravenous Immunoglobulin

BACKGROUND: Despite encouraging reports on the efficacy of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) in antiphospholipid syndrome, the clinical value of this treatment is not well established, and most of the data are based on case reports and small series of patients. OBSERVATION: We describe the significant improvement of leg ulcers with IVIg in a 61-year-old female, with diabetes mellitus, venous peripherical insufficiency and secondary antiphospholipid syndrome to systemic lupus erythematosus. CONCLUSIONS: This case illustrates a rare cause of leg ulcers and documents that IVIg may be an effective adjuvant treatment in the management of selected patients with antiphospholipid syndrome when conventional strategies using subcutaneous heparin and low-dose aspirin are insufficient

A bio-inspired postural control for a quadruped robot : an attractor-based dynamic

Postural stability is a requirement for autonomous adaptive legged locomotion. Neurobiological research lead to the idea that there are independent central systems for posture and locomotion, which interact when required. In this work we propose a posture control system focused in the standing posture context. We integrate the proposed posture system with a CPG design based on coupled nonlinear oscillators. The proposed system generates movements for posture correction which are modulated according to sensory information. We integrate several different responses that individually contribute to the posture equilibrium. This coordination, competition and redundancy among the responses is a key element for adaptive, flexible and fault tolerant motor system. The control system is validated through a few experiments, where the robot is subjected to different posture situations ranging from roll and pitch variations to loss of feet support

An e-portrait of international business schools’ strategy: an exploratory study on business strategy and value proposition as reflected by internationally accredited business schools’ web sites

I23 - Higher Education Research Institutions; M16 - International Business AdministrationSurrounded by and born out of an increasingly borderless, competitive and customer-centred world, business schools are being pushed into replacing the typical educational ad-hoc management by a more strategic and market-driven approach. However, due to the so-claimed specificities of educational service and the academic ambitions of business schools, this path is neither consensual nor generalised. This study looks into international business schools’ web sites as a “shop window” to their choices of resources and interaction with the environment, as well as a “counter” where a service experience is provided to the different stakeholders. Therefore the web site content of a selected group of internationally accredited and/or ranked business schools across the globe has been explored, by analysing homepage content and specific pages about the school, for references to pre-defined strategy and marketing variables. Findings are that even among schools that share some common standards, there is a wide diversity of scenarios, where strategy and value are absent, vague or, in a few cases, well defined and differentiated. Many schools still need to be more strategic about their choices, while basing communication on a stronger value proposition for their customers. We did find traces of isomorphism, mainly in strategy statements, choice of stakeholders addressed and communicated value-in-use. By benchmarking other players, business schools competing internationally have the opportunity not only of guaranteeing they incorporate the must-have key success factors of the sector, but also to find, invest in and highlight the actual combination of resources, competencies and positioning that allow them an effective differentiation.Num mundo cada vez mais global, competitivo e centrado no cliente, as escolas de negócio estão a ser forçadas a substituir o tradicional modelo de gestão ad-hoc por uma abordagem mais estratégica e orientada para o mercado. Mas, devido às alegadas especificidades da oferta educacional e às ambições académicas destas escolas, esta substituição não é consensual nem generalizada. Este estudo aborda os sítios na internet das escolas de negócios internacionais como uma montra para as suas escolhas de recursos e articulação com o ambiente envolvente, assim como um balcão onde é disponibilizada uma experiência aos vários interlocutores. Analisámos o conteúdo dos sítios de um grupo selecionado de escolas de negócios espalhadas pelo mundo e incluídas em rankings e/ou com acreditações internacionais, focando na primeira página e nas páginas sobre a escola, procurando referências a variáveis de estratégia e marketing pré-definidas. Concluímos que, mesmo entre escolas que se regem por orientações comuns, há uma grande variedade de cenários, onde a estratégia e o valor estão ausentes, pouco definidos ou, em poucos casos, claramente apresentados e de forma diferenciadora. Muitas das escolas necessitam ainda de serem mais estratégicas nas suas escolhas, baseando a sua comunicação no valor que aportam aos clientes. Encontrámos exemplos de isomorfismo, principalmente a nível da definição da estratégia, seleção de interlocutores e comunicação de valor. A comparação com outras escolas permitirá garantir não só que são incorporados os fatores críticos de sucesso, mas também que são encontrados, que se invista e sejam destacados os recursos, competências e posicionamento que permitirão uma diferenciação efetiva

Breaking the status quo: a virtual journey through electrification

Growth culture conditions and nutrient signaling modulating yeast chronological longevity

The manipulation of nutrient-signaling pathways in yeast has uncovered the impact of environmental growth conditions in longevity. Studies using calorie restriction show that reducing glucose concentration of the culture media is sufficient to increase replicative and chronological lifespan (CLS). Other components of the culture media and factors such as the products of fermentation have also been implicated in the regulation of CLS. Acidification of the culture media mainly due to acetic acid and other organic acids production negatively impacts CLS. Ethanol is another fermentative metabolite capable of inducing CLS reduction in aged cells by yet unknown mechanisms. Recently, ammonium was reported to induce cell death associated with shortening of CLS. This effect is correlated to the concentration of added to the culture medium and is particularly evident in cells starved for auxotrophy-complementing amino acids. Studies on the nutrient-signaling pathways regulating yeast aging had a significant impact on aging-related research, providing key insights into mechanisms that modulate aging and establishing the yeast as a powerful system to extend knowledge on longevity regulation in multicellular organisms.This work was supported by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), Portugal Grant PTDC/AGR-ALI/102608/2008.
