    Areas of natural occurrence of melipona scutellaris Latreille, 1811(Hymenoptera: Apidae) in the state of Bahia, Brazil.

    The bee Melipona scutellaris is considered the reared meliponine species with the largest distribution in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, with records from the state of Rio Grande do Norte down to the state of Bahia. Considering the importance of this species in the generation of income for family agriculture and in the preservation of areas with natural vegetation, this study aimed at providing knowledge on the distribution of natural colonies of M. scutellaris in the state of Bahia. Literature information, interviews with stinglessbee beekeepers, and expeditions were conducted to confirm the natural occurrence of the species. A total of 102 municipalities showed records for M. scutellaris, whose occurrence was observed in areas ranging from sea level up to 1,200-meter height. The occurrence of this species in the state of Bahia is considered to be restricted to municipalities on the coastal area and the Chapada Diamantina with its rainforests. Geographic coordinates, elevation, climate and vegetation data were obtained, which allowed a map to be prepared for the area of occurrence in order to support conservation and management policies for the species

    Genome-wide signatures of complex introgression and adaptive evolution in the big cats.

    The great cats of the genus Panthera comprise a recent radiation whose evolutionary history is poorly understood. Their rapid diversification poses challenges to resolving their phylogeny while offering opportunities to investigate the historical dynamics of adaptive divergence. We report the sequence, de novo assembly, and annotation of the jaguar (Panthera onca) genome, a novel genome sequence for the leopard (Panthera pardus), and comparative analyses encompassing all living Panthera species. Demographic reconstructions indicated that all of these species have experienced variable episodes of population decline during the Pleistocene, ultimately leading to small effective sizes in present-day genomes. We observed pervasive genealogical discordance across Panthera genomes, caused by both incomplete lineage sorting and complex patterns of historical interspecific hybridization. We identified multiple signatures of species-specific positive selection, affecting genes involved in craniofacial and limb development, protein metabolism, hypoxia, reproduction, pigmentation, and sensory perception. There was remarkable concordance in pathways enriched in genomic segments implicated in interspecies introgression and in positive selection, suggesting that these processes were connected. We tested this hypothesis by developing exome capture probes targeting ~19,000 Panthera genes and applying them to 30 wild-caught jaguars. We found at least two genes (DOCK3 and COL4A5, both related to optic nerve development) bearing significant signatures of interspecies introgression and within-species positive selection. These findings indicate that post-speciation admixture has contributed genetic material that facilitated the adaptive evolution of big cat lineages

    Falls in hospital settings: a longitudinal study

    This study aims to assess the prevalence of falls, understand their consequences, identify causes and analyze intervention strategies to prevent them. This is a descriptive longitudinal study, from 2007 to 2009, in which nurses recorded patients' falls in a medicine ward, using a scale developed for this end. Most falls occurred with partially dependent patients, with a mean age ranging from 64 to 74 years. The bedroom was, in all of these years, the place where most of these falls occurred. Although most falls did not have consequences, they were observed in 36% of the cases. The number of falls increased throughout the years of the study. There was also a difference in the percentage of occurrences in the afternoon and night shifts (39% in 2007, 57% in 2008 and 64% in 2009). The identification of obstacles to referral and how to overcome them are analyzed here.Este estudio intenta evaluar la prevalencia de las caídas, conocer sus consecuencias, identificar causas y estudiar estrategias de intervención para prevenirlas. Es un estudio descriptivo longitudinal, realizado entre 2007 y 2009, donde los enfermeros registraron las caídas de enfermos en un servicio de medicina, de acuerdo con una escala elaborada para este propósito. La mayoría de las caídas ocurrió en enfermos parcialmente dependientes, cuyas edades variaban entre 64 y 74 años. La habitación fue, en todos los años, donde mayoritariamente estas ocurrieron. Aunque la mayoría de las caídas no hayan tenido consecuencias, se registraron en 36% de los casos. Este número aumentó a lo largo de los años del estudio. Se rebeló, igualmente, una diferencia en la proporcionalidad del número de registros para los turnos de la tarde/noche (39%, 2007, 57%, 2008 y 64%, 2009). Se analiza la identificación de las barreras a la referencia y como rebasar estas barreras.Este estudo visou avaliar a prevalência das quedas, conhecer as suas consequências, identificar as causas e estudar estratégias de intervenção para preveni-las. É um estudo descritivo longitudinal, de 2007 a 2009, com registro, pelos enfermeiros, das quedas dos doentes, num serviço de medicina, em escala construída para o efeito. A maioria das quedas ocorreu em doentes parcialmente dependentes, variando a idade entre 64 e 74 anos. O quarto foi, em todos os anos, o local onde maioritariamente ocorreram. Embora da maioria das quedas não houvesse resultado consequências, essas foram registradas em 36% dos casos. O número de quedas registrado aumentou ao longo dos anos do estudo. De igual modo se revelou diferença na proporcionalidade do número de registros para os turnos da tarde e noite (39% em 2007, 57% em 2008 e 64% em 2009).     Nitrogen uptake and internal recycling in Zostera marina exposed to oyster farming: eelgrass potential as a natural biofilter

    Oyster farming in estuaries and coastal lagoons frequently overlaps with the distribution of seagrass meadows, yet there are few studies on how this aquaculture practice affects seagrass physiology. We compared in situ nitrogen uptake and the productivity of Zostera marina shoots growing near off-bottom longlines and at a site not affected by oyster farming in San Quintin Bay, a coastal lagoon in Baja California, Mexico. We used benthic chambers to measure leaf NH4 (+) uptake capacities by pulse labeling with (NH4)-N-15 (+) and plant photosynthesis and respiration. The internal N-15 resorption/recycling was measured in shoots 2 weeks after incubations. The natural isotopic composition of eelgrass tissues and vegetative descriptors were also examined. Plants growing at the oyster farming site showed a higher leaf NH4 (+) uptake rate (33.1 mmol NH4 (+) m(-2) day(-1)) relative to those not exposed to oyster cultures (25.6 mmol NH4 (+) m(-2) day(-1)). We calculated that an eelgrass meadow of 15-16 ha (which represents only about 3-4 % of the subtidal eelgrass meadow cover in the western arm of the lagoon) can potentially incorporate the total amount of NH4 (+) excreted by oysters (similar to 5.2 x 10(6) mmol NH4 (+) day(-1)). This highlights the potential of eelgrass to act as a natural biofilter for the NH4 (+) produced by oyster farming. Shoots exposed to oysters were more efficient in re-utilizing the internal N-15 into the growth of new leaf tissues or to translocate it to belowground tissues. Photosynthetic rates were greater in shoots exposed to oysters, which is consistent with higher NH4 (+) uptake and less negative delta C-13 values. Vegetative production (shoot size, leaf growth) was also higher in these shoots. Aboveground/belowground biomass ratio was lower in eelgrass beds not directly influenced by oyster farms, likely related to the higher investment in belowground biomass to incorporate sedimentary nutrients

    Objective. Two experiments were conducted on a slaughterhouse located in Brazil, which the first aimed at evaluating the injuries on pig skin and carcass resulting from slaughterhouse waiting area management and the second aimed at assessing how glucose (G), sodium bicarbonate (SB) and vitamin E (VE) added to water during pre-slaughter fasting may affect carcass yield, organ relative weight and pork meat quality characteristics. Materials and methods. First trial included 1000 pigs, which were observed in the slaughterhouse resting area until the moment they entered the stunning process area. In the second trial were used 500 animals distributed on the last pre-slaughter day in a completely randomized design, including ten treatments and ten replicates. The treatments were: water; 50 g/L G; 50 g/L G + 200 mg/L of VE; 75 g/L of G; 75 g/L of G + 200 mg VE; 0.45% SB; 0.45% SB + 200 mg/L of VE; 0.55% SB; 0.55% SB + 200 mg/L of VE; 200 mg/L of VE. Results. Carcass yield and relative organ weight were not affected by treatments. The addition of 0.55% SB + 200 mg VE reduced the final pH of meat, and of 0.45% SB reduced the red pigment intensity. Conclusions. The main occurrences of injuries to the skin and carcass of pigs are due to fights. Also, adding glucose, sodium bicarbonate, and vitamin E to diet did not affect the carcass and viscera yield and meat quality.Objetivo. Se realizaron dos experimentos en un beneficiadero en Brasil, dirigido a la evaluación de las lesiones en la piel de cerdo y la canal en la área de espera del beneficiadero y destinado a evaluar los efectos de glucosa (G), bicarbonato de sodio (SB) y vitamina E (VE) añadida al agua durante el ayuno antes de la masacre en el rendimiento de la canal, de órganos y la calidad de la carne. Materiales y métodos. En primer ensayo incluyó a 1.000 cerdos, observados en la zona de descanso del beneficiadero hasta la entrada en el área del aturdimiento. En el segundo ensayo se utilizaron 500 animales en el último día antes del beneficio, en un diseño experimental incluyendo diez repeticiones. Los tratamientos fueron: agua; 50 g/L G; 50 g/L G + 200 mg/L VE; 75 g/L G; 75 g/L G + 200 mg VE; 0.45% SB; 0.45% SB + 200 mg/L VE; 0.55% SB; 0.55% SB + 200 mg/L VE; 200 mg/L of VE. Resultados. Los rendimiento de la canal y de órganos no se vieron afectados por los tratamientos. La adición de 0.55 % SB + 200 mg VE redujo el pH final de la carne, y de 0.45 % SB reduce el valor de pigmento rojo. Conclusiones. Los principales casos de lesiones en la piel y la canal de cerdos se deben a peleas. La adición de los nutrientes en el agua de bebida no afectó a la carcasa, el rendimiento vísceras y calidad de la carne

    Synthesis and Features of Luminescent Bromo- and Iodohectorite Nanoclay Materials

    The smectites represent a versatile class of clay minerals with broad usage in industrial applications, e.g., cosmetics, drug delivery, bioimaging, etc. Synthetic hectorite Na-0.7(Mg5.5Li0.3)[Si8O20](OH)(4) is a distinct material from this class due to its low-cost production method that allows to design its structure to match better the applications. In the current work, we have synthesized for the first time ever nanoclay materials based on the hectorite structure but with the hydroxyl groups (OH-) replaced by Br- or I-, yielding bromohectorite (Br-Hec) and iodohectorite (I-Hec). It was aimed that these materials would be used as phosphors. Thus, OH- replacement was done to avoid luminescence quenching by multiphonon de-excitation. The crystal structure is similar to nanocrystalline fluorohectorite, having the d(001) spacing of 14.30 angstrom and 3 nm crystallite size along the 00l direction. The synthetic materials studied here show strong potential to act as host lattices for optically active species, possessing mesoporous structure with high specific surface area (385 and 363 m(2) g(-1) for Br-Hec and I-Hec, respectively) and good thermal stability up to 800 degrees C. Both materials also present strong blue-green emission under UV radiation and short persistent luminescence (ca. 5 s). The luminescence features are attributed to Ti3+/Ti-IV impurities acting as the emitting center in these materials

    Development and testing of an online community care platform for frail older adults in the Netherlands: a user-centred design

    Background Recent transitions in long-term care in the Netherlands have major consequences for community-dwelling older adults. A new paradigm expects them to manage and arrange their own care and support as much as possible. Technology can support this shift. A study has been conducted to explore the needs of community-dwelling frail older adults with regard to an online platform. An existing platform was subsequently modified, based upon these needs, resulting in an online community care platform (OCC-platform) comprising of care, health, and communication functions. The purpose of this platform was to support frail older adults in their independence and functioning, by stimulating self-care and providing reliable information, products and services. Methods The study used a User-Centred Design. The development processes involved the following steps: Step 1) Identification of the User Requirements. To assess the user requirements, direct observations (N = 3) and interviews (N = 14) were performed. Step 2) Modification of an Existing Online Platform. Based upon Step 1, available online platforms were explored to determine whether an existing useful product was available. Two companies collaborated in modifying such a platform; Step 3) Testing the Modified Platform. A total of 73 older adults were invited to test a prototype of the OCC-platform during 6 months, which comprised of two phases: (1) a training phase; and (2) a testing phase. Results An iterative process of modifications resulted in an interactive software concept on a Standard PC, containing 11 Functions. The Functions of ‘contacts’, ‘services’ and ‘messaging’, were by far, the most frequently used. The use was at its highest during the first 2 weeks of the testing and then its use steadily declined. The vast majority of the subjects (94%) were positive about the usability of the platform. Only a minority of the subjects (27%) indicated that the platform had added value for them. Conclusion The overall prospect was that an OCC-platform can contribute to the social participation and the self-management competencies of frail older adults, together with their social cohesion in the community. In order to validate these prospects, further research is needed on the characteristics and the impact of online platforms
