The process was monitored on-line in a prototype dyeing system since the addition of cationic agents will influence dye uptake. Different dyeing conditions were tested with direct dyes, with and without salt, until the exhaustion curve was at least equivalent to the standard dyeing curve in the presence of salt

    Membrane-based separation in flow analysis for environmental and food applications

    Membrane-based separation techniques have been used as an efficient process for analyte separation or enrichment and matrix removal. By coupling these techniques to flow-based analysis, sample preparation and analyte detection can be automated and miniaturized. Different membrane separation techniques are available but the most used in flow analysis are gas diffusion, dialysis, supported liquid membranes and polymer inclusion membranes. The current state of the art of membrane-based separations hyphenated with flow techniques is presented along with a discussion of the applications to environmental and food analysis.     Evaluation of FT-Raman and FTIR-ATR spectroscopy for the quality evaluation of Lavandula spp. Honey

    Monofloral Lavandula spp. honey is very appreciated by consumers due to its characteristic and pleasant aroma and flavor. Given the economic importance of this type of honey, it is important to develop a rapid and non-expensive methodology that allows certifying its quality. In this context, this study aimed to compare the applicability and accuracy of FTIR-ATR and FT-Raman techniques for the quality evaluation of Lavandula spp. honey. Calibration models, with PLS regression models, were obtained for both methodologies concerning the following parameters: total acidity, reducing sugars, hidroximetilfurfural (HMF), electrical conductivity, ash, proline content, diastase activity, apparent sucrose, total flavonoids, and total phenolic contents. The calibration models had high regression coefficients, r2 (FTIR-ATR: 0.965–0.996; FT-Raman: 0.983–0.999), high ratios of performance to deviation, RPD (FTIR-ATR: 5.4–15.7; FT-Raman: 7.6–53.7), and low root mean square errors (RMSEs; FTIR-ATR: 0.005–3.0; FT-Raman: 0.004–1.02). These results corroborate the potentiality of FTIR-ATR and FT-Raman for quality evaluation and evaluation of the chemical properties of Lavandula spp. honey even though FT-Raman technique provided more accurate models.Centro de Estudos Florestais is a research unit funded by FCT (UIDB/00239/2020).     Trajetorias: a dataset of environmental, epidemiological, and economic indicators for the Brazilian Amazon

    The Trajetorias dataset is a harmonized set of environmental, epidemiological, and poverty indicators for all municipalities of the Brazilian Legal Amazon (BLA). This dataset is the result of a scientific synthesis research initiative conducted by scientists from several natural and social sciences fields, consolidating multidisciplinary indicators into a coherent dataset for integrated and interdisciplinary studies of the Brazilian Amazon.     Blood group AB is associated with poor outcomes in infants with necrotizing enterocolitis

    BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a neonatal disease associated with necrosis and perforation of the bowel. We investigated the association between blood group and NEC outcomes and the potential contribution of fetal-maternal blood group incompatibility. METHODS: Retrospective study including all preterm-born infants with NEC (≥ Bell's stage IIa) admitted to our NICU between January 2008 and October 2019. We analyzed the association between infants' blood groups and fetal-maternal blood group incompatibility with Bell stage severity, need for surgery, and mortality due to NEC. RESULTS: We included 237 NEC patients. In univariable analyses both AB blood group and fetal-maternal blood group incompatibility increased infants' risk of severe outcomes, with odds ratios (OR) ranging from 6.57 to 12.06 and 1.97 to 2.38, respectively. When adjusted for gestational age only AB blood group remained significant with OR 7.47 (95% confidence interval, 1.95-28.53, P = 0.003), 12.37 (2.63-58.20, P = 0.001), and 8.16 (2.28-29.14, P = 0.001) for NEC Bell's stage III, need for surgery, and NEC related mortality, respectively. Blood group incompatibility adjusted for gestational age was not related to worse outcomes with OR 1.84 (0.87-3.89, P = 0.11, 2.08 (0.98-4.41, P = 0.06) 1.52 (0.68-3.42, P = 0.31), for NEC Bell's stage III, need for surgery, and NEC related mortality, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our data confirm an association between blood group AB and worse outcomes in NEC infants, but this is not based on fetal-maternal blood group incompatibility

    Biomechanical comparison of the four-strand cruciate and Strickland techniques in animal tendons

    OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare two four-strand techniques: the traditional Strickland and cruciate techniques. METHODS: Thirty-eight Achilles tendons were removed from 19 rabbits and were assigned to two groups based on suture technique (Group 1, Strickland suture; Group 2, cruciate repair). The sutured tendons were subjected to constant progressive distraction using a universal testing machine (Kratos®). Based on data from the instrument, which were synchronized with the visualized gap at the suture site and at the time of suture rupture, the following data were obtained: maximum load to rupture, maximum deformation or gap, time elapsed until failure, and stiffness. RESULTS: In the statistical analysis, the data were parametric and unpaired, and by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, the sample distribution was normal. By Student's t-test, there was no significant difference in any of the data: the cruciate repair sutures had slightly better mean stiffness, and the Strickland sutures had longer time-elapsed suture ruptures and higher average maximum deformation. CONCLUSIONS: The cruciate and Strickland techniques for flexor tendon sutures have similar mechanical characteristics in vitro

    A DYNAMOMETRIC SYSTEM FOR STUDIES OF BALANCE WHILE QUIET STANDING (PROTOTYPE)

    Studies on balance while quiet standing are frequently conducted through the measurement of the Center of Pressure (COP). Usually, a triaxial force platform is used in such studies, where the horizontal forces can be considered negligible. However, the cost of such instrument is a high limitation for research in this field. Considering that vertical reactions are significant they can be used to measure COP oscillations.
