    Isotemporal substitution of inactive time with physical activity and time in bed: cross-sectional associations with cardiometabolic health in the PREDIMEDPlus study

    Background: This study explored the association between inactive time and measures of adiposity, clinical parameters, obesity, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome components. It further examined the impact of reallocating inactive time to time in bed, light physical activity (LPA) or moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) on cardio-metabolic risk factors, including measures of adiposity and body composition, biochemical parameters and blood pressure in older adults. Methods: This is a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from 2189 Caucasian men and women (age 55-75 years, BMI 27-40 Kg/m2) from the PREDIMED-Plus study (http://www.predimedplus.com/). All participants had ≥3 components of the metabolic syndrome. Inactive time, physical activity and time in bed were objectively determined using triaxial accelerometers GENEActiv during 7 days (ActivInsights Ltd., Kimbolton, United Kingdom). Multiple adjusted linear and logistic regression models were used. Isotemporal substitution regression modelling was performed to assess the relationship of replacing the amount of time spent in one activity for another, on each outcome, including measures of adiposity and body composition, biochemical parameters and blood pressure in older adults. Results: Inactive time was associated with indicators of obesity and the metabolic syndrome. Reallocating 30 min per day of inactive time to 30 min per day of time in bed was associated with lower BMI, waist circumference and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) (all p-values < 0.05). Reallocating 30 min per day of inactive time with 30 min per day of LPA or MVPA was associated with lower BMI, waist circumference, total fat, visceral adipose tissue, HbA1c, glucose, triglycerides, and higher body muscle mass and HDL cholesterol (all p-values < 0.05). Conclusions: Inactive time was associated with a poor cardio-metabolic profile. Isotemporal substitution of inactive time with MVPA and LPA or time in bed could have beneficial impact on cardio-metabolic health

    Relationship between olive oil consumption and ankle-brachial pressure index in a population at high cardiovascular risk

    The aim of this study was to ascertain the association between the consumption of different categories of edible olive oils (virgin olive oils and olive oil) and olive pomace oil and ankle-brachial pressure index (ABI) in participants in the PREDIMED-Plus study, a trial of lifestyle modification for weight and cardiovascular event reduction in individuals with overweight/obesity harboring the metabolic syndrome. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of the PREDIMED-Plus trial. Consumption of any category of olive oil and olive pomace oil was assessed through a validated food-frequency questionnaire. Multivariable linear regression models were fitted to assess associations between olive oil consumption and ABI. Additionally, ABI ≤1 was considered as the outcome in logistic models with different categories of olive oil and olive pomace oil as exposure. Results: Among 4330 participants, the highest quintile of total olive oil consumption (sum of all categories of olive oil and olive pomace oil) was associated with higher mean values of ABI (beta coefficient: 0.014, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.002, 0.027) (p for trend = 0.010). Logistic models comparing the consumption of different categories of olive oils, olive pomace oil and ABI ≤1 values revealed an inverse association between virgin olive oils consumption and the likelihood of a low ABI (odds ratio [OR] 0.73, 95% CI [0.56, 0.97]), while consumption of olive pomace oil was positively associated with a low ABI (OR 1.22 95% CI [1.00, 1.48]). Conclusions: In a Mediterranean population at high cardiovascular risk, total olive oil consumption was associated with a higher mean ABI. These results suggest that olive oil consumption may be beneficial for peripheral artery disease prevention, but longitudinal studies are needed

    Total and Subtypes of Dietary Fat Intake and Its Association with Components of the Metabolic Syndrome in a Mediterranean Population at High Cardiovascular Risk

    Background: The effect of dietary fat intake on the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and in turn on cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains unclear in individuals at high CVD risk. Objective: To assess the association between fat intake and MetS components in an adult Mediterranean population at high CVD risk. Design: Baseline assessment of nutritional adequacy in participants (n = 6560, men and women, 55-75 years old, with overweight/obesity and MetS) in the PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea (PREDIMED)-Plus randomized trial. Methods: Assessment of fat intake (total fat, monounsatured fatty acids: MUFA, polyunsaturated fatty acids: PUFA, saturated fatty acids: SFA, trans-fatty acids: trans-FA, linoleic acid, α-linolenic acid, and ω-3 FA) using a validated food frequency questionnaire, and diet quality using 17-item Mediterranean dietary questionnaire and fat quality index (FQI). Results: Participants in the highest quintile of total dietary fat intake showed lower intake of energy, carbohydrates, protein and fiber, but higher intake of PUFA, MUFA, SFA, TFA, LA, ALA and ω-3 FA. Differences in MetS components were found according to fat intake. Odds (5th vs. 1st quintile): hyperglycemia: 1.3-1.6 times higher for total fat, MUFA, SFA and ω-3 FA intake; low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c): 1.2 higher for LA; hypertriglyceridemia: 0.7 lower for SFA and ω-3 FA intake. Conclusions: Dietary fats played different role on MetS components of high CVD risk patients. Dietary fat intake was associated with higher risk of hyperglycemia

    Dietary diversity and nutritional adequacy among an older Spanish population with Metabolic Syndrome in the PREDIMED-Plus study: a cross-sectional analysis

    Dietary guidelines emphasize the importance of a varied diet to provide an adequate nutrient intake. However, an older age is often associated with consumption of monotonous diets that can be nutritionally inadequate, increasing the risk for the development or progression of diet-related chronic diseases, such as metabolic syndrome (MetS). To assess the association between dietary diversity (DD) and nutrient intake adequacy and to identify demographic variables associated with DD, we cross-sectionally analyzed baseline data from the PREDIMED-Plus trial: 6587 Spanish adults aged 55–75 years, with overweight/obesity who also had MetS. An energy-adjusted dietary diversity score (DDS) was calculated using a 143-item validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Nutrient inadequacy was defined as an intake below 2/3 of the dietary reference intake (DRI) forat least four of 17 nutrients proposed by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). Logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association between DDS and the risk of nutritionally inadequate intakes. In the higher DDS quartile there were more women and less current smokers. Compared with subjects in the highest DDS quartile, those in the lowest DDS quartile had a higher risk of inadequate nutrient intake: odds ratio (OR) = 28.56 (95% confidence interval (CI) 20.80–39.21). When we estimated food varietyfor each of the food groups, participants in the lowest quartile had a higher risk of inadequate nutrient intake for the groups of vegetables, OR = 14.03 (95% CI 10.55–18.65), fruits OR = 11.62 (95% CI 6.81–19.81), dairy products OR = 6.54 (95% CI 4.64–9.22) and protein foods OR = 6.60 (95% CI 1.96–22.24). As DDS decreased, the risk of inadequate nutrients intake rose. Given the impact of nutrient intake adequacy on the prevention of non-communicable diseases, health policies should focus on the promotion of a healthy varied diet, specifically promoting the intake of vegetables and fruit among population groups with lower DDS such as men, smokers or widow(er)s.     Efeito da utilização de Butil-Hidroxianizol como agente antioxidante em biodiesel de óleos residuais

    Um dos desafios a serem superados nos próximos anos, buscando ampliar a utilização de biodiesel no mercado brasileiro, trata da sua estabilidade à oxidação. Pela sua composição química, o biodiesel oxida-se quando em contato com o ar ou submetido à ação do calor, provocando variação de parâmetros como viscosidade cinemática, índice de acidez e índice de peróxidos. Desta forma, o presente trabalhou buscou atender à esta demanda a partir da aplicação de butil-hidroxianizol como agente antioxidante em biodiesel produzido a partir de óleos e gorduras residuais. Durante quatro semanas, foram avaliadas quatro concentrações deste antioxidante no biodiesel: 250, 500, 750 e 1000 ppm. Para acompanhar a evolução da oxidação do combustível, foi monitorado o seu índice de peróxido. Os resultados mostraram que a concentração de 1000 ppm se mostrou mais eficaz que as demais no controle da formação de peróxidos durante os ensaios, indicando maior capacidade de controlar a oxidação do combustível. Por fim, foi determinada a estabilidade à oxidação do biodiesel sem adição de butil-hidroxianizol e com a adição deste produto na concentração de 1000 ppm. Os resultados mostraram um aumento superior à 700 % na estabilidade à oxidação do biodiesel pelo uso deste antioxidante nesta concentração, corroborando os resultados obtidos a partir do monitoramento do índice de peróxido

    Com o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos dos níveis de uréia ou casca de algodão sobre a produção de proteína microbiana, estimada por meio dos derivados de purinas na urina, a concentração de uréia plasmática (NUP) e as excreções de uréia em novilhos, foram realizados dois experimentos. No primeiro, 24 novilhos mestiços castrados, com peso vivo médio inicial de 300 kg, foram alocados em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, nos quatro tratamentos: 0; 0,65; 1,30 e 1,95% de uréia na base da MS total, em substituição à proteína do farelo de soja. No segundo, 16 novilhos mestiços, com peso vivo médio inicial de 230 kg, foram distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, nos quatro tratamentos: 0, 10, 20 e 30% de casca de algodão na base da MS total, em substituição à silagem de capim-elefante. As amostras de urina foram obtidas por meio da coleta de urina spot, na qual foram determinados os derivados de purinas (alantoína e ácido úrico). No soro sanguíneo e na urina, foram analisadas as concentrações de uréia e creatinina. Não houve efeito dos níveis de uréia, tampouco dos de casca de algodão, sobre os derivados de purinas e sobre a eficiência de síntese microbiana. A concentração de NUP e a excreção de uréia não foram influenciadas pelos níveis de uréia das rações. A concentração de NUP decresceu linearmente com a inclusão da casca de algodão na dieta. Tanto a uréia quanto a casca de algodão podem ser utilizadas, até os níveis de 1,95% e 30%, respectivamente, na MS total da dieta de novilhos de origem leiteira, sem afetar a eficiência de síntese microbiana.<br>Two trials were conducted to study the effects of different levels of urea or cottonseed hulls on yield of microbial protein, estimated by the urinary excretion of purine derivatives, concentration of plasma urea, and excretion of urea in steers. In the first trial, 24 crossbred castrated steers averaging 300 kg of initial live weight (LW) were uniformly assigned to four treatments in a complete randomized design as follows: 0, 0.65, 1.30, or 1.95% of urea (% of dry matter) that replaced soybean meal in the diet. In the second study, 16 crossbred steers averaging 230 kg of initial LW were uniformly assigned to four treatments in a complete randomized design as follows: 0, 10, 20, or 30% of cottonseed hulls (% of dry matter) that replaced elephant grass silage in the diet. Spot urine samples were obtained and the concentration of purine derivatives (allantoin plus uric acid) determined. Concentrations of creatinine and urea were analyzed in both blood plasma and urine. No significant differences in the urinary concentration of purine derivatives and in the estimation of microbial protein yield were observed by feeding different levels of urea or cottonseed hulls to steers. Similarly, no significant differences in the concentration of plasma urea and in the urinary excretion of urea were found by increasing the proportions of urea in the diet. However, concentration of plasma urea decreased linearly by replacing elephantgrass silage with cottonseed hulls in the second trial. It can be concluded that urea as well as cottonseed hulls can be included up to 1.95 and 30% of the diet dry matter, respectively, with no significant change in the efficiency of microbial protein synthesis
