Solitons in a nonlinear model of spin transport in helical molecules
We study an effective integrable nonlinear model describing an electron moving along the axis of a deformable helical molecule. The helical conformation of dipoles in the molecular backbone induces an unconventional Rashba-like interaction that couples the electron spin with its linear momentum. In addition, a focusing nonlinearity arises from the electron-lattice interaction, enabling the formation of a variety of stable solitons such as bright solitons, breathers, and rogue waves. A thorough study of the soliton solutions for both focusing and defocusing nonlinear interaction is presented and discussed
Preliminary evaluation of the presence of organochlorine pesticides in fish of Vicente Guerrero dam (Tamaulipas, Mexico)
Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are classified as persistent organic pollutants. The presence of OCPs in the environment is of global concern as they are persistent, ubiquitous and highly toxic. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the presence of organochlorine pesticides (aldrin, endrin, chlordane, mirex, heptachlor, DDT, DDE and DDD) in the muscle of four fish species from Vicente Guerrero Dam in Tamaulipas (Mexico): catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), carp (Ciprynus carpio), largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) and tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Solid phase extraction and gas chromatography with electron capture detector was used to detect the pesticides. The highest concentration found was for DDE in largemouth bass, carp and catfish (239.90, 165.98 and 212.31 ng/g, respectively) and for chlordane in catfish and largemouth bass (44.66 and 64.22 ng/g). There is a risk of carcinogenic effects if carp and largemouth bass are regularly consumed by the population in the region as the concentration of p-p′-DDE is higher than the recommendations of the US Environmental Protection AgencyLos pesticidas organoclorados (OCPs por sus siglas en inglés) están clasificados como contaminantes orgánicos persistentes.
Primordial non-Gaussianity with Angular correlation function: Integral constraint and validation for DES
Local primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) is a promising observable of the
underlying physics of inflation, characterised by . We
present the methodology to measure from the Dark Energy
Survey (DES) data using the 2-point angular correlation function (ACF) with
scale-dependent bias. One of the focuses of the work is the integral
constraint. This condition appears when estimating the mean number density of
galaxies from the data and is key in obtaining unbiased
constraints. The methods are analysed for two types of simulations:
GOLIAT-PNG N-body small area simulations with equal to -100 and
100, and 1952 Gaussian ICE-COLA mocks with that follow the DES
angular and redshift distribution. We use the ensemble of GOLIAT-PNG mocks to
show the importance of the integral constraint when measuring PNG, where we
recover the fiducial values of within the when including
the integral constraint. In contrast, we found a bias of when not including it. For a DES-like scenario, we forecast a bias of
, equivalent to , when not using the IC
for a fiducial value of . We use the ICE-COLA mocks to validate
our analysis in a realistic DES-like setup finding it robust to different
analysis choices: best-fit estimator, the effect of IC, BAO damping,
covariance, and scale choices. We forecast a measurement of within
when using the DES-Y3 BAO sample, with the ACF in the
range.Comment: Version after MNRAS reviewer comments. Improved discussion in Section

Encapsulation of antioxidant phenolic compounds extracted from spent coffee grounds by freeze-drying and spray-drying using different coating materials
Supplementary data associated with this article can be found, in the online version, at http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.foodchem.2017.05.142.Freeze-drying and spray-drying techniques were evaluated for encapsulation of phenolic compounds (PC) extracted from spent coffee grounds. Additionally, the use of maltodextrin, gum arabic and a mixture of these components (ratio 1:1) as wall material to retain the PC and preserve their antioxidant activity was also assessed. The contents of PC and flavonoids (FLA), as well as the antioxidant activity of the encapsulated samples were determined in order to verify the efficiency of each studied condition. Additional analyses for characterization of the samples were also performed. Both the technique and the coating material greatly influenced the encapsulation of antioxidant PC. The best results were achieved when PC were encapsulated by freeze-drying using maltodextrin as wall material. Under these conditions, the amount of PC and FLA retained in the encapsulated sample corresponded to 62% and 73%, respectively, and 73-86% of the antioxidant activity present in the original extract was preserved. This work was supported by the Science and Technology Foundation of Portugal (FCT - grant SFRH/BD/80948/2011); the Strategic Project (PEst-OE/EQB/LA0023/2013); and the Project ‘‘BioInd -

Validating galaxy clustering models with Fixed & Paired and Matched-ICs simulations: application to Primordial Non-Gaussianities
The Fix and Pair techniques were designed to generate simulations with
reduced variance in the 2-point statistics by modifying the Initial Conditions
(ICs). In this paper we show that this technique is also valid when the initial
conditions have local Primordial non-Gaussianities (PNG), parametrised by
, without biasing the 2-point statistics but reducing significantly
their variance. We show how to quantitatively use these techniques to test the
accuracy of galaxy/halo clustering models down to a much reduced uncertainty
and we apply them to test the standard model for halo clustering in the
presence of PNG. Additionally, we show that by Matching the stochastic part of
the ICs for two different cosmologies (Gaussian and non-Gaussian) we obtain a
large correlation between the (2-point) statistics that can explicitly be used
to further reduce the uncertainty of the model testing. For our reference
analysis (, , , ), we obtain an uncertainty of
with a standard simulation, whereas using Fixed
[Fixed-Paired] initial conditions it reduces to
[]. When also Matching the ICs we obtain for the standard case, and [] for Fixed [Fixed-Paired]. The combination of the Fix, Pair and Match
techniques can be used in the context of PNG to create simulations with an
effective volume incremented by a factor at given computational
resources.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures. Submitted to MNRA
