    High-pressure x-ray diffraction study of bulk and nanocrystalline PbMoO4

    We studied the effects of high-pressure on the crystalline structure of bulk and nanocrystalline scheelite-type PbMoO4. We found that in both cases the compressibility of the materials is highly non-isotropic, being the c-axis the most compressible one. We also observed that the volume compressibility of nanocrystals becomes higher that the bulk one at 5 GPa. In addition, at 10.7(8) GPa we observed the onset of an structural phase transition in bulk PbMoO4. The high-pressure phase has a monoclinic structure similar to M-fergusonite. The transition is reversible and not volume change is detected between the low- and high-pressure phases. No additional structural changes or evidence of decomposition are found up to 21.1 GPa. In contrast nanocrystalline PbMoO4 remains in the scheelite structure at least up to 16.1 GPa.     El texto escolar es herramienta fundamental en el desarrollo curricular de las instituciones educativas rurales. Existe relación directa entre el currículo de las escuelas rurales y el texto escolar porque materializa en el aula la política estatal y promueve una serie de valores que no están explícitos en el currículo. Los docentes rurales, en medio de la precariedad, encuentran en el texto escolar un aliado que les permite desarrollar su trabajo de manera más efectiva, pero también pueden encontrar un obstáculo si dicho material no responde a las necesidades específicas del estudiante rural ni de los aprendizajes esperados. Textos escolares pueden haber de muchas cualidades, pero poco pertinentes. Como componente curricular, el texto escolar para escuela rural requiere de características que permitan aprendizajes significativos, centrados en las necesidades específicas de la ruralidad y que promuevan valores esenciales. A partir de la revisión bibliográfica de cinco referentes, se proponen criterios de revisión y/o adecuación de textos: calidad, relación con referentes de calidad de Ministerios o secretarías de Educación, pertinencia, relación con la práctica docente y apoyo a la formación docente en ejercicio. Esta primera revisión bibliográfica hace parte de una investigación que indaga por la percepción sobre los textos escolares que tienen docentes rurales en algunos departamentos de Colombia

    Validation of the geographic position of EPER-Spain industries

    BACKGROUND: The European Pollutant Emission Register in Spain (EPER-Spain) is a public inventory of pollutant industries created by decision of the European Union. The location of these industries is geocoded and the first published data correspond to 2001. Publication of these data will allow for quantification of the effect of proximity to one or more such plant on cancer and all-cause mortality observed in nearby towns. However, as errors have been detected in the geocoding of many of the pollutant foci shown in the EPER, it was decided that a validation study should be conducted into the accuracy of these co-ordinates. EPER-Spain geographic co-ordinates were drawn from the European Environment Agency (EEA) server and the Spanish Ministry of the Environment (MOE). The Farm Plot Geographic Information System (Sistema de Información Geográfica de Parcelas Agrícolas) (SIGPAC) enables orthophotos (digitalized aerial images) of any territorial point across Spain to be obtained. Through a search of co-ordinates in the SIGPAC, all the industrial foci (except farms) were located. The quality criteria used to ascertain possible errors in industrial location were high, medium and low quality, where industries were situated at a distance of less than 500 metres, more than 500 metres but less than 1 kilometre, and more than 1 kilometre from their real locations, respectively. RESULTS: Insofar as initial registry quality was concerned, 84% of industrial complexes were inaccurately positioned (low quality) according to EEA data versus 60% for Spanish MOE data. The distribution of the distances between the original and corrected co-ordinates for each of the industries on the registry revealed that the median error was 2.55 kilometres for Spain overall (according to EEA data). The Autonomous Regions that displayed most errors in industrial geocoding were Murcia, Canary Islands, Andalusia and Madrid. Correct co-ordinates were successfully allocated to 100% of EPER-Spain industries. CONCLUSION: Knowing the exact location of pollutant foci is vital to obtain reliable and valid conclusions in any study where distance to the focus is a decisive factor, as in the case of the consequences of industrial pollution on the health of neighbouring populations.This study was funded by grant FIS 040041 from the Health Research Fund (Fondo de Investigación Sanitaria)S

    Melting curve and phase diagram of vanadium under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions

    We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of the melting curve and the structural behavior of vanadium under extreme pressure and temperature. We performed powder x-ray diffraction experiments up to 120 GPa and 4000 K, determining the phase boundary of the bcc-to-rhombohedral transition and melting temperatures at different pressures. Melting temperatures have also been established from the observation of temperature plateaus during laser heating, and the results from the density-functional theory calculations. Results obtained from our experiments and calculations are fully consistent and lead to an accurate determination of the melting curve of vanadium. These results are discussed in comparison with previous studies. The melting temperatures determined in this study are higher than those previously obtained using the speckle method, but also considerably lower than those obtained from shock-wave experiments and linear muffin-tin orbital calculations. Finally, a high-pressure high-temperature equation of state up to 120 GPa and 2800 K has also been determined

    Oesophageal cancer mortality in Spain: a spatial analysis

    BACKGROUND: Oesophageal carcinoma is one of the most common cancers worldwide. Its incidence and mortality rates show a wide geographical variation at a world and regional level. Geographic mapping of age-standardized, cause-specific death rates at a municipal level could be a helpful and powerful tool for providing clues leading to a better understanding of its aetiology. METHODS: This study sought to describe the geographic distribution of oesophageal cancer mortality for Spain's 8077 towns, using the autoregressive spatial model proposed by Besag, York and Mollié. Maps were plotted, depicting standardised mortality ratios, smoothed relative risk (RR) estimates, and the spatial pattern of the posterior probability of RR being greater than 1. RESULTS: Important differences associated with area of residence were observed in risk of dying from oesophageal cancer in Spain during the study period (1989-1998). Among men, excess risk appeared across the north of the country, along a band spanning the length of the Cantabrian coastline, Navarre, the north of Castile & León and the north-west of La Rioja. Excess risk was likewise observed in the provinces of Cadiz and part of Seville in Andalusia, the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, and some towns in the Barcelona and Gerona areas. Among women, there was a noteworthy absence of risk along the mid-section of the Cantabrian seaboard, and increases in mortality, not observed for men, in the west of Extremadura and south-east of Andalusia. CONCLUSION: These major gender- and area-related geographical differences in risk would seem to reflect differences in the prevalence of some well-established and modifiable risk factors, including smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity and diet. In addition, excess risks were in evidence for both sexes in some areas, possibly suggesting the implication of certain local environmental or socio-cultural factors.     El objetivo central de la investigación fue proponer estrategias de social media marketing para orientar la gestión de relación con los clientes en Automotriz Ocaña Santamaria, Piura 2022. Se utilizó una metodología aplicada, cuantitativa, no experimental, transversal. La población y muestra estuvo conformada por 168 clientes, en cuanto a los instrumentos de recolección se empleó una guía de entrevista y el cuestionario compuesto por 23 ítems en escala de Likert, los datos fueron procesados mediante el programa estadístico SPSS. En cuanto a los resultados demostraron que no manejan adecuadamente las redes sociales de la empresa ya que el 64.3% indicó estar en desacuerdo, 59.5% está Indeciso con el marketing one-to-one, 50.6% en desacuerdo con la atracción del cliente y por último el 79.8% en desacuerdo con la retención del cliente, se concluyó que debe mejorar en la implementación de social media marketing ya que en la actualidad es muy empleado, además que es de fácil acceso para que puedan ofrecer productos o servicios de alta calidad

    Compressibility and phase stability of iron-rich ankerite

    ABSTRACT: The structure of the naturally occurring, iron-rich mineral Ca₁․₀₈(₆)Mg₀.₂₄(₂)Fe₀.₆₄(₄)Mn₀.₆₄(₄)(CO₃)₂ ankerite was studied in a joint experimental and computational study. Synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction measurements up to 20 GPa were complemented by density functional theory calculations. The rhombohedral ankerite structure is stable under compression up to 12 GPa. A third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state yields V₀ = 328.2(3) ų, bulk modulus B₀ = 89(4) GPa, and its first-pressure derivative B'₀ = 5.3(8)-values which are in good agreement with those obtained in our calculations for an ideal CaFe(CO₃)₂ ankerite composition. At 12 GPa, the iron-rich ankerite structure undergoes a reversible phase transition that could be a consequence of increasingly non-hydrostatic conditions above 10 GPa. The high-pressure phase could not be characterized. DFT calculations were used to explore the relative stability of several potential high-pressure phases (dolomite-II-, dolomite-III- and dolomite-V-type structures), and suggest that the dolomite-V phase is the thermodynamically stable phase above 5 GPa. A novel high-pressure polymorph more stable than the dolomite-III-type phase for ideal CaFe(CO₃)₂ ankerite was also proposed. This high-pressure phase consists of Fe and Ca atoms in sevenfold and ninefold coordination, respectively, while carbonate groups remain in a trigonal planar configuration.     Effects of high-pressure on the structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of monazite-type PbCrO4

    We have performed an experimental study of the crystal structure, lattice-dynamics, and optical properties of PbCrO4 (the mineral crocoite) at ambient and high pressures. In particular, the crystal structure, Raman-active phonons, and electronic band-gap have been accurately determined. X-ray-diffraction, Raman, and optical-absorption experiments have allowed us also to completely characterize two pressure-induced structural phase transitions. The first transition is isostructural, maintaining the monoclinic symmetry of the crystal, and having important consequences in the physical properties; among other a band-gap collapse is induced. The second one involves an increase of the symmetry of the crystal, a volume collapse, and probably the metallization of PbCrO4. The results are discussed in comparison with related compounds and the effects of pressure in the electronic structure explained. Finally, the room-temperature equation of state of the low-pressure phases is also obtained.Comment: 32 pages, 9 figures, 3 table

    Breast Dense Tissue Segmentation with Noisy Labels: A Hybrid Threshold-Based and Mask-Based Approach

    Breast density assessed from digital mammograms is a known biomarker related to a higher risk of developing breast cancer. Supervised learning algorithms have been implemented to determine this. However, the performance of these algorithms depends on the quality of the ground-truth information, which expert readers usually provide. These expert labels are noisy approximations to the ground truth, as there is both intra- and inter-observer variability among them. Thus, it is crucial to provide a reliable method to measure breast density from mammograms. This paper presents a fully automated method based on deep learning to estimate breast density, including breast detection, pectoral muscle exclusion, and dense tissue segmentation. We propose a novel confusion matrix (CM)-YNet model for the segmentation step. This architecture includes networks to model each radiologist's noisy label and gives the estimated ground-truth segmentation as well as two parameters that allow interaction with a threshold-based labeling tool. A multi-center study involving 1785 women whose "for presentation" mammograms were obtained from 11 different medical facilities was performed. A total of 2496 mammograms were used as the training corpus, and 844 formed the testing corpus. Additionally, we included a totally independent dataset from a different center, composed of 381 women with one image per patient. Each mammogram was labeled independently by two expert radiologists using a threshold-based tool. The implemented CM-Ynet model achieved the highest DICE score averaged over both test datasets (0.82±0.14) when compared to the closest dense-tissue segmentation assessment from both radiologists. The level of concordance between the two radiologists showed a DICE score of 0.76±0.17. An automatic breast density estimator based on deep learning exhibited higher performance when compared with two experienced radiologists. This suggests that modeling each radiologist's label allows for better estimation of the unknown ground-truth segmentation. The advantage of the proposed model is that it also provides the threshold parameters that enable user interaction with a threshold-based tool.This research was partially funded by Generalitat Valenciana through IVACE (Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness) distributed by nomination to Valencian technological innovation centres under project expedient IMDEEA/2021/100.
