After a short introduction on the voyages organized by several explorers of the Northwest Atlantic from the fifteenth century in order to find a navigable passage to the Pacific Ocean, several researchers, in order to reach the North Pole, have followed the historical overview of the Portuguese explorations on those seas whose fishing grounds that were rich in fish, especially cod. The early cod fishery made by the Portuguese through time from the sixteenth century until their near extinction is briefly described. The description also includes the evolution of vessels, fishing techniques, electronics applied to the function of fisheries, communications and geographic position of the vessel. Furthermore, conditions in which they fished and the obstacles that hindered the work, such as fields of ice, icebergs, tropical cyclones (hurricanes), heavy sea and the security measures taken on ships and cares to be taken with the crews are also object of the paper. How work on board of the vessels is organized and the relationships between the various members and hierarchies of the crew, not only in the terms of fishery activity but also on the safety conditions for crew members and ship were also analysed

Pimenta is cofinanced by national funds through the Programa Operacional do Alentejo 2007-2013 (ALENT-07-0262- FEDER-001883)This study compared the effects of a bout of maximal running exercise on arterial stiffness in children and adults. Right carotid blood pressure and artery stiffness indices measured by pulse wave velocity (PWV), compliance and distensibility coefficients, stiffness index α and β (echo-tracking), contralateral carotid blood pressure, and upper and lower limb and central/aortic PWV (applanation tonometry) were taken at rest and 10 min after a bout of maximal treadmill running in 34 children (7.38 ± 0.38 years) and 45 young adults (25.22 ± 0.91 years) having similar aerobic potential. Two-by-two repeated measures analysis of variance and analysis of covariance were used to detect differences with exercise between groups. Carotid pulse pressure (PP; η(2) = 0.394) increased more in adults after exercise (p < 0.05). Compliance (η(2) = 0.385) decreased in particular in adults and in those with high changes in distending pressure, similarly to stiffness index α and β. Carotid PWV increased more in adults and was related to local changes in PP but not mean arterial pressure (MAP). Stiffness in the lower limbs decreased (η(2) = 0.115) but apparently only in those with small MAP changes (η(2) = 0.111). No significant exercise or group interaction effects were found when variables were adjusted to height. An acute bout of maximal exercise can alter arterial stiffness and hemodynamics in the carotid artery and within the active muscle beds. Arterial stiffness and hemodynamic response to metabolic demands during exercise in children simply reflect their smaller body size and may not indicate a particular physiological difference compared with adults.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

New records of moths (Insecta, Lepidoptera) from urban gardens on Terceira Island with new data on recently introduced species to the Azores

The urban Duque da Terceira Garden, in the main town of Angra do Heroísmo (Terceira, Azores), was investigated to describe the species composition of moths (Insecta, Lepidoptera). Moths were sampled with two methods: SLAM traps (between April and September 2017) and light trapping (two sessions in the summer of 2017). A total of 42 taxa were sampled with the addition of 19 new records for Duque da Terceira Garden, five of which were also new records for Terceira Island. The five species recorded as new for Terceira were subjected to an exhaustive taxonomic analysis. In addition, we revised the colonization status of some species. Our results show that urban gardens may help the establishment of exotic species and that it is necessary to monitor and control how these species established in urban environments.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Poster apresentado no 60th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, 18-23 Fevereiro, 2008, Washington, DC, EUAPortugal is traditionally an agricultural country, consequently intoxications by pesticides are very common. An 81 year old male, diabetic, with chronic renal failure, was admitted at the hospital with a suspicion of voluntary ingestion of copper sulfate. Four days later he died. At the autopsy it was possible to see a green colouration of the nails, (...)N/

Reconstruction of the skull inverting the deformed surface of the bone after exeresis of a frontal arachnoid cyst

Intracranial arachnoid cysts need to be operated on when they are causing symptoms and aesthetic problems. The aim of this case report was to describe a new method of reconstructing the skull by eliminating a left frontal bone deformity by turning the inside out and the outside inward, which provided good aesthetics and protected the region of surgical interest after the removal of an arachnoid cyst of the left frontal lob

The influence of parental variables and child behavioral inhibition on social anxiety in preschool children: The moderator effects of gender

    Get PDF
The main objective of this study was to examine how parental characteristics, such as social anxiety (SA) and parental overprotection, and child's behavioral inhibition (BI) interact and contribute to the manifestation of SA symptoms in preschoolers. Parents (Mothers: n= 319; Fathers: n= 263) of children aged between 3 and 6 years answered to self-report measures of overprotection and SA and measures of SA and BI about their children. A positive moderate direct association was observed between children's BI and children's SA, independently of gender. Overprotection arises as a mediator of the effects of the parents' social anxiety on children's SA; however, this mediation depends both on the child's and parents' gender. Only mother's SA was directly related to children's SA, independently of the gender of the child. Overall, these findings extend to preschool children the previous studies that consider parents' overprotective styles and social anxiety, as well as child's BI, the main variables underlying the SA in childhood. In addition, our results highlight the importance of considering the moderator role of gender in the origin and maintenance of SA symptoms in preschoolers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
