Insights into the challenges posed by climate change and land competition to Brazil’s Midwest pulpwood market

I investigated the effect of climate change in one of the few expanding markets in the world in Brazil. In the last decades the demand for pulpwood increased from zero to 11 million tons, leading to an expansion of 700 thousand hectares of Eucalyptus plantation. In 2024, a new mill will start operating increasing the consumption of wood fiber by 8.2 million tons (+49%). I used mathematical programming to investigate how different scenarios of productivity and land will affect the market. My results showed that around 946,000 hectares (+124%) of additional timberland will be necessary in the upcoming decades. The first impact will be an increase in the production cost of around US$550 million (+16.4%) in 25 years. If the rate of land cover change remains constant, the broad development of the local market would be constrained, discouraging future investments, and reducing potential positive externalities in the region

Management of Anticoagulation Around Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device Surgery

The number of patients requiring cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED, e.g., pacemaker and defibrillator) surgery is increasing rapidly and at least a quarter of them are using chronic oral anticoagulation (OAC). Recently, the traditional approach of withholding anticoagulation and using heparin bridging has been challenged by studies showing safety of performing CIED surgery under anticoagulation with vitamin K antagonists. Bridging with heparin is associated with incremental healthcare costs, prolonged hospital admission, and also with an augmented relative risk of pocket hematoma. The risk of embolic events seems to be low and similar with the use of two strategies (heparin bridging and continuous warfarin). Experience with novel oral anticoagulants is limited. Few studies suggest that withholding 48–72 hours before surgery and performing the procedure under anticoagulation are safe alternatives. However, larger randomized clinical trials are needed before definitive conclusions. Eles são só bebês, o que podem aprender no berçário?

Trabalho de Conclusão do Curso de Especialização em Educação Infantil - 1ª Edição – Polo Joinville - SC, para a obtenção do Grau de Especialista em Educação InfantilEste artigo tem como objetivo discutir o processo de ensino-aprendizagem de bebês frequentadores de um espaço de educação coletiva, bem como analisar a importância das interações e relações para o desenvolvimento dos bebês. O tema é relevante na medida em que crescem os debates em torno do desenvolvimento de bebês e sobre o processo de ensino-aprendizagem em berçários. O trabalho busca demonstrar como a prática no Berçário e a intencionalidade do docente é capaz de proporcionar aos bebês momentos de ricas e significativas vivências levando-os a aprendizagens. Para embasar o tema buscou-se aporte teórico em Barbosa, Facci, Galvão, Pino, Schimitz e Tristão, sob a perspectiva da psicologia sócio histórica de Vigotski e Wallon. A partir desta fundamentação foi realizada uma análise de um trabalho realizado no Berçário I de um Centro de Educação Infantil da rede municipal de Joinville – SC, durante o ano letivo de 2011. Uma turma, de quatorze bebês entre 04 a 22 meses e três profissionais da educação, participaram deste trabalho, que além da observação diária da professora responsável contou como ferramentas, para análise e interpretação dos dados os planejamentos, registros, portfólios de aprendizagens e fotos das vivências da turma. Os resultados demonstram que através dos conhecimentos adquiridos acerca das concepções que envolvem a Educação Infantil e dos conhecimentos sobre o desenvolvimento infantil de 0 a 24 meses, aliados a experiência docente em sala, é possível, promover e planejar espaços e encontros no Berçário, de modo que desenvolvam nos bebês capacidades motoras, intelectuais e afetivas através da apropriação de novos saberes, conhecimentos e da cultura historicamente construída

Respiratory Care Protocols in Neonatal Intensive Care

Neonatal respiratory care involves physicians with variable backgrounds treating multiple respiratory problems and populations with a number of invasive and non-invasive devices and strategies. Unfortunately, there is a lack of strong evidence to guide the most adequate management for several specific situations. Altogether, this complexity leads to significant practice variability that can affect patient and health care outcomes. Respiratory care protocols, guided by evidence and/or consensus, are an attractive solution to promote standardization of care and reduction of unnecessary practice variations. Indeed, despite the limited evidence supporting the use of respiratory protocols in neonates, a significant number of units have already developed and implemented them into clinical practice. Respiratory care protocols appear to promote evidence-based practices, discourage outdated approaches and ultimately improve patient safety

Touchless Zoom Operation Based on Eye Distance

This disclosure describes techniques to enable users to touchlessly zoom in and out content displayed on a mobile device with a screen. Per the techniques, the zoom level is made dependent on the distance between the screen and the user’s eyes. For example, as a user moves their device away from their eyes, the view on the screen zooms out (decreases magnification) such that a larger field of content is encompassed within the screen. As the user moves the device towards their eyes, the view on the screen zooms in (increases magnification) to specific portions of the content, such that the details of a particular object of interest on the screen are more clearly visible. The techniques enable users to naturally navigate displayed content by keeping their device at an arm’s distance, and to examine a particular object of interest by bringing their device closer. Using the distance of the phone relative to the user\u27s eye as a signal to automatically toggle between screen magnification levels enables effortless browsing. Multiple levels of magnification (or continuous magnification) can be used for different types of content

A hydrologically-driven approach to climate change adaptation for multipurpose multireservoir system

[EN] Climate change can significantly affect water systems with negative impacts on many facets of society and ecosystems. Therefore, significant attention must be devoted to the development of efficient adaptation strategies. More specifically, the reoperation of water resources systems to keep the overall performance within acceptable limits should be prioritized to avoid, or at least delay as much as possible, costly infrastructural investments. This manuscript presents a hydrologically-driven approach to support the reoperation of multipurpose multireservoir systems. The approach is organized around 1) the use of a large ensemble of GCM hydro-climate projections to drive a climate stress test; 2) the bottom-up clustering of those hydrologic projections based on hydrologic attributes that are both relevant to the region of interest and interpretable by the operators; and finally, 3) the identification of adaptation measures for each cluster after developing a one-way coupling of an optimization model with a simulation model. The climate impact assessment is illustrated with the multipurpose multireservoir system of the Lievre River basin in Quebec (Canada). Segurança da informação sob a perspectiva da Ciência da Informação no Brasil

Através de variados meios de comunicação, a informação está constantemente presente no nosso cotidiano, e com advento das tecnologias tornou mais fácil seu acesso, resultando, contudo, com disponibilidade em nossas mãos. A informação necessita de cuidados e para isso é preciso seguir alguns princípios de segurança e métodos para sua proteção. Na atualidade, a informação cada dia mais necessita de cuidados, devido aos avanços tecnológicos e constantes ameaças, desta forma, é importante ter controle, consciência da informação que está sendo mediada. Normalização e controle do tratamento da informação, para certificar os princípios da Segurança da Informação, que são integridade, confidencialidade e disponibilidade. Aliada a isto, a Ciência da Informação é posta como uma disciplina inclinada à solução de problemas relativos à produção, tratamento, recuperação, circulação e uso da informação. O presente trabalho é uma pesquisa bibliográfica, de natureza básica e de abordagem qualitativa, tendo por objetivo demonstrar como a Ciência da Informação pode contribuir para a Segurança da Informação. Para tal, foi realizada uma análise na produção científica em bases como: BDTD, BRAPCI, Google Acadêmico, CAPES, LUME e Scielo. Dentre os resultados da busca, foram selecionados trabalhos que demonstrassem, de diversas formas e maneiras, a interdisciplinaridade entre a Ciência da Informação e a Segurança da Informação. Desta interdisciplinaridade, quatro grupos temáticos foram investigados: Políticas da Segurança da Informação; Gestão da Informação; Gestão da Segurança da Informação e Interdisciplinaridade entre a Ciência da Informação e a Segurança da Informação.Information is constantly present in our day by day, however it is necessary to follow some security principles. Nowadays, information needs more care, due to technological advances and threats, in this way, it is important to have control, awareness of information that is being mediated. Standardization and control of the treatment of the information are necessary to certify the principles of Information Security, which are secrecy, confidentiality and availability. Allied to this, Information Science is posted as a discipline inclined to solve problems in the production, treatment, retrieval, circulation and use of information. The present work is a bibliographical research, of basic nature and qualitative approach, aiming to demonstrate that Information Science can contribute to Information Security. An analysis was carried out on the scientific production in information sources such as: BDTD, BRAPCI, Google Scholar, CAPES, LUME and Scielo. A telenovela de Jorge Andrade, Os ossos do Barão, exibida com sucesso nos anos de 1973-74, está sendo produzida novamente e prevista para ir ao ar pelo SBT - Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão. Para contribuir com a história do gênero, o artigo oferece dados sobre o texto original do autor, seu cuidado com a fusão de duas peças teatrais na construção do script - A escada (1961) e Os ossos do Barão (1962) -, suas preocupações cênicas, metalingüísticas e políticas e os problemas com a censura da época. The telenovela by Jorge Andrade Os ossos do Barão (The bones of the Baron) broadcasted successfully in 1973 and 1974 is being produced again and should be on at the TV network Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão - SBT (Brazilian System of Television - BST). In order to contribute with the history of gender, the article offers some information about the original text of the author, his attention with the association of two plays in the construction of the script - A escada (The ladder) (1961) and Os ossos do Barão (1962) -, his scenical, metalinguistic and political concern and the problems he had at that time with censorship.

A Aplicação da Cláusula de Territorialidade no Contrato de Franquia sob a Ótica Concorrencial

The purpose of this article is to analyze if the territoriality clause in franchise agreement is a practice which violates the principle of free enterprise and competition. Therefore, it will be presented the concept of franchising according to Law nº 8.955 of 1994, highlighting its economical and social importance and the need of issuing rules which deal with gaps of the Law. The method applied in this study was deductive, the research conducted was based on documents, and involved the analysis of legislations, doctrinal and jurisprudential studies, as well as review of journal articles. The territoriality clause was analyzed with commercial focus, emphasizing its relevance to franchise agreement conclusion. It was noted that the lack of clear positioning of the Superior Courts and CADE regarding the territoriality clauses in franchise agreements, affect the analysis under perspective of antitrust law. Only when those authorities pronounce directly about this subject, the issue may finally be clarified.O presente artigo tem como objetivo analisar se a cláusula de territorialidade do contrato de franquia trata-se de prática que viola o princípio da livre iniciativa e da livre concorrência. À vista disto, será apresentado o conceito de franquia empresarial à luz da Lei nº 8.955 de 1994, ressaltando a relevância econômico-social do sistema e a necessidade de edição de normas que versem sobre as lacunas da Lei. O método utilizado para o trabalho foi o dedutivo, a pesquisa realizada foi de caráter documental e envolveu a análise de legislação, além de estudos doutrinários, jurisprudenciais, e exame de artigos em periódicos. A cláusula de territorialidade foi analisada com enfoque comercial, destacando sua importância para a formalização do contrato de franquia. Observou-se que a falta de posicionamento claro dos Tribunais Superiores e do CADE a respeito da cláusula de territorialidade nos contratos de franquia, prejudica a análise sob a ótica do direito concorrencial. Apenas quando estes órgãos se manifestarem diretamente sobre a referida cláusula, poder-se-á esclarecer definitivamente a questão.
