    Using Optically Stimulated Luminescence to Unravel Sedimentary Processes of the Usumacinta and Grijalva Rivers (SE Mexico)

    This report provides an optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) chronology for sediment collected through terrace deposits of the Usumacinta and Grijalva rivers in SE Mexico. The Grijalva and Usumacinta rivers are susceptible to flooding during the hurricane season (between May and November), affecting the population of the state of Tabasco, and leaving many households at a flood risk. The present study was initiated to obtain an understanding of the sediment processes, rates and frequency of flood events in the past. The report summaries the initial luminescence profiling, using a SUERC PPSL system, and laboratory analysis, used to characterise the stratigraphy and interpret sedimentary processes in each profile, together with the quantitative quartz SAR dating used to define chronologies in each. Initial luminescence profiling revealed that the stratigraphy in each was complex, reflecting multiple cycles of deposition, with maxima, followed by a tail to lower intensities, possibly indicating deposition during extreme flood events, followed by a period in which the sediment was mixed and the luminescence signals reset. The laboratory profiling reproduced the apparent maxima/trends in the field profiling dataset. In the Grijalva section, the profiling samples encompass the full range of variations in the IRSL net signal intensities, re-affirming the complex stratigraphy. In the Usumacinta section, the profiling samples were positioned on the trend of a normal age-depth progression, which may indicate that the horizons sampled are well suited for quartz SAR dating. Given the nature of the sediment sampled, it is unsurprising that the equivalent dose distributions obtained for each of the dating samples showed considerable scatter, leading to some ambiguity in estimating a stored dose for age calculations. In each, a number of aliquots returned high equivalent dose values, implying residual luminescence signals (leading to higher apparent ages), and others, low values, implying re-setting of the luminescence signals in the modern environment. It is well recognised that fluvial sediment of this sort can enclose mixed-age populations. It has been argued elsewhere (Fuchs and Lang, 2001; Lepper et al., 2000; Olley et al., 1998; Olley et al., 1999) that the lowest population of dose(s) may best represent the burial dose of the youngest depositional component, and that an arbitrary value of say the lowest 5% be used in age calculations. However, if this method was instigated for the Mexican samples, it would include the low equivalent dose values thought to reflect contamination from the surface, by bioturbation or some other weathering process, leading to artificially young ages. Therefore, each sample was evaluated on an individual basis, where low equivalent doses were considered to represent contamination and rejected, along with high equivalent dose outliers and any aliquots which failed SAR acceptance criteria. The weighted mean and weighted standard deviation of the reduced set were used in age calculations. The dating results reported here provide a first chronology to interpret the changing fluvial dynamics of the Usumacinta and Grijalva rivers, and a means to quantify flood events through the historical period. The chronology established for the Grijalva section spans from the 6th century AD to the 12th century AD; and the chronology for the Usumacinta section from the 17th century AD to the 19th century AD

    Histidine nutrition and genotype affect cataract development in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L.

    The aim of this study was to investigate effects of dietary levels of histidine (His) and iron (Fe) on cataract development in two strains of Atlantic salmon monitored through parr-smolt transformation. Three experimental diets were fed: (i) a control diet (CD) with 110 mg kg-1 Fe and 11.7 g kg-1 His; (ii) CD supplemented with crystalline His to a level of 18 g kg-1 (HD); and (iii) HD with added iron up to 220 mg kg-1 (HID). A cross-over design, with two feeding periods was used. A 6-week freshwater (FW) period was followed by a 20-week period, of which the first three were in FW and the following 17 weeks in sea water (SW). Fish were sampled for weighing, cataract assessment and tissue analysis at five time points. Cataracts developed in all groups in SW, but scores were lower in those fed high His diets (P < 0.05). This effect was most pronounced when HD or HID was given in SW, but was also observed when these diets were given in FW only. Histidine supplementation had a positive effect on growth performance and feed conversion ratio (P < 0.05), whereas this did not occur when iron was added. Groups fed HD or HID had higher lens levels of His and N-acetyl histidine (NAH), the latter showing a marked increase post-smoltification (P < 0.05). The HD or HID groups also showed higher muscle concentrations of the His dipeptide anserine (P < 0.05). There was a strong genetic influence on cataract development in the CD groups (P < 0.001), not associated with tissue levels of His or NAH.     2MASS J06164006-6407194: The First Outer Halo L Subdwarf

    We present the serendipitous discovery of an L subdwarf, 2MASS J06164006-6407194, in a search of the Two Micron All Sky Survey for T dwarfs. Its spectrum exhibits features indicative of both a cool and metal poor atmosphere including a heavily pressured-broadened K I resonant doublet, Cs I and Rb I lines, molecular bands of CaH, TiO, CrH, FeH, and H2O, and enhanced collision induced absorption of H2. We assign 2MASS 0616-6407 a spectral type of sdL5 based on a comparison of its red optical spectrum to that of near solar-metallicity L dwarfs. Its high proper motion (mu =1.405+-0.008 arcsec yr-1), large radial velocity (Vrad = 454+-15 km s-1), estimated uvw velocities (94, -573, 125) km s-1 and Galactic orbit with an apogalacticon at ~29 kpc are indicative of membership in the outer halo making 2MASS 0616-6407 the first ultracool member of this population.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

    Infrasonic backpulsed membrane cleaning micro-and ultrafiltration membranes fouled with alumina and yeast

    Membrane fouling is universally considered to be one of the most critical problems in the wider application of membrane filtration. In this research microfiltration membranes were fouled during a cross-flow filtration process, using yeast and alumina suspensions in a flat cell. Infrasonic backpulsing directly into the permeate space was then used to clean the membrane, using both permeate water and soap solutions. Ultrasonic time domain reflectometry (UTDR) was used to detect and measure the growth of fouling on membrane surfaces, during the filtration and cleaning processes. The objective of this work was to examine the efficiency of back-pulse cleaning, using different combinations of membrane materials and foulants, in flat cells. The results show that a flux value of between 60% and 95% of the clean water value can be recovered after cleaning, by using a sequence of three 6.7 Hz backpulses, each pulse being 35 s long with a peak amplitude of about 140 kPa

    An Integrated Assessment and Management Optimization System for Grazinglands

    Rangelands and pasturelands are often assessed using different methodologies. The Interpreting Indicators of Rangeland Health and Pasture Condition Scoring methodologies, two techniques used widely across the USA, were developed for rangelands and pasturelands respectively. These two grazingland assessment techniques were determined to be complementary and if integrated could provide an optimized approach to measure grazinglands without regards to specific use (i.e. range or pasture). We present an improved grazingland assessment protocol that merges indicators and attributes from Interpreting Indicators of Rangeland Health and Pasture Condition Scoring methodologies. This Integrated Grazingland Assessment (IGA) approach allows evaluators to assess site conditions and to make interpretations regarding management based on site-specific attributes (soil and site stability, hydrologic function, biotic integrity) that can potentially optimize the ecological potential and livestock carrying capacity of a site. The IGA provides a way of detecting changes in these ecological attributes relative to a site\u27s ecological potential. The IGA can also inform land managers about the utility of an area for livestock production or factors that could be keeping the area from operating at its full productive potential, while accounting for the different management objectives (e.g. increase productivity while maintaining native rangeland, optimizing seed mixes to improve planted pasture productivity) for the grazinglands where these methods are usually applied

    In the Interests of clients or commerce? Legal aid, supply, demand, and 'ethical indeterminacy' in criminal defence work

    As a professional, a lawyer's first duty is to serve the client's best interests, before simple monetary gain. In criminal defence work, this duty has been questioned in the debate about the causes of growth in legal aid spending: is it driven by lawyers (suppliers) inducing unnecessary demand for their services or are they merely responding to increased demand? Research reported here found clear evidence of a change in the handling of cases in response to new payment structures, though in ways unexpected by the policy's proponents. The paper develops the concept of 'ethical indeterminacy' as a way of understanding how defence lawyers seek to reconcile the interests of commerce and clients. Ethical indeterminacy suggests that where different courses of action could each be said to benefit the client, the lawyer will tend to advise the client to decide in the lawyer's own interests. Ethical indeterminacy is mediated by a range of competing conceptions of 'quality' and 'need'. The paper goes on to question the very distinction between 'supply' and 'demand' in the provision of legal services

    Variation in the spatial distribution of erector spinae activity during a lumbar endurance task in people with low back pain

    © 2019 Anatomical Society This study aimed to investigate the spatial distribution and redistribution of lumbar erector spinae (ES) activity during a lumbar extension endurance task in pain-free participants and how this is modified in people with low back pain (LBP). High density surface electromyography (HDEMG) was recorded using 13 × 5 electrode grids placed over the lumbar ES in 13 LBP and 13 control participants while completing an Ito test to task failure. The root mean square of the HDEMG signals was computed, a topographical map of the EMG amplitude generated and the centre of the activity (centroid) determined throughout the task. The centroid of the EMG amplitude map was systematically more cranial (F = 6.09, P = 0.022) for the LBP participants compared with the control subjects. Regression analysis showed that the extent of redistribution of ES activity was associated with longer endurance. These results show that LBP participants utilised a different motor strategy to perform the endurance task, characterised by greater activation of more cranial regions of the ES and less redistribution of ES activity throughout the task.     LoCuSS: The steady decline and slow quenching of star formation in cluster galaxies over the last four billion years

    We present an analysis of the levels and evolution of star formation activity in a representative sample of 30 massive galaxy clusters at 0.15<z<0.30 from the Local Cluster Substructure Survey (LoCuSS), combining wide-field Spitzer 24um data with extensive spectroscopy of cluster members. The specific-SFRs of massive (M>10^10 M_sun) star-forming cluster galaxies within r200 are found to be systematically 28% lower than their counterparts in the field at fixed stellar mass and redshift, a difference significant at the 8.7-sigma level. This is the unambiguous signature of star formation in most (and possibly all) massive star-forming galaxies being slowly quenched upon accretion into massive clusters, their SFRs declining exponentially on quenching time-scales in the range 0.7-2.0 Gyr. We measure the mid-infrared Butcher-Oemler effect over the redshift range 0.0-0.4, finding rapid evolution in the fraction (f_SF) of massive (M_K3M_sun/yr, of the form f_SF (1+z)^7.6. We dissect the origins of the Butcher-Oemler effect, revealing it to be due to the combination of a ~3x decline in the mean specific-SFRs of star-forming cluster galaxies since z~0.3 with a ~1.5x decrease in number density. Two-thirds of this reduction in the specific-SFRs of star-forming cluster galaxies is due to the steady cosmic decline in the specific-SFRs among those field galaxies accreted into the clusters. The remaining one-third reflects an accelerated decline in the star formation activity of galaxies within clusters. The slow quenching of star-formation in cluster galaxies is consistent with a gradual shut down of star formation in infalling spiral galaxies as they interact with the intra-cluster medium via ram-pressure stripping or starvation mechanisms.
