Democracy and Inquiry in the Post-Truth Era: A pragmatist Solution
Post-truth has become a commonplace strategy. No longer are objective facts viewed as having evidentiary value; scientific knowledge is on a par with emotions or personal beliefs. We intend to show that in the context of post-truth, those proffering and receiving an assertion do not care about the truth-value of the assertion or about the best way to gather evidence concerning it. Such attitudes raise several questions about how relativism can be a corrupting influence in contemporary democracies. We will analyse Steve Fuller’s use of the term «post-truth» – especially, the political connotations about epistemic democracy that he highlights. Instead, we offer a pragmatist defence of the truth and an alternative meaning of epistemic democracy
Expanding Clinical Knowledge and Awareness to Non-Benzodiazepine Treatments by Providing an Educational Intervention: A Quantitative Study
This study examined the effectiveness of an educational intervention for healthcare clinicians to increase knowledge and awareness of non-benzodiazepine treatments for the treatment of anxiety and panic disorders. The target population were healthcare clinicians in a metropolitan area that commonly treat anxiety and panic disorders. Clinicians from different specialties were recruited to participate and evaluated on their knowledge of benzodiazepines on a 3-question pretest survey using a Likert scale. The clinician was then given a 30-minute educational intervention that covered the risks and dangers of benzodiazepines and a review of alternative, non-benzodiazepine treatment options. The clinician then self-evaluated themselves using a similar 3-question posttest survey. The results were examined to determine the effectiveness of the educational intervention in changing clinical practice
Bridging the Digital Divide: Towards a New Paradigm
My direct experience in the digital divide was when I was marketing director for a band-new state-of-the-art program origination and satellite transmission facility in Singapore seven years ago in 1996. Our first and anchor client was the highly successful Discovery Network--which housed in our facility the first all-digital channel to the Asia-Pacific market
Our Country’s immigrant population has kept growing, since the eighties, at a very
significant pace. The ever increasing number of immigrants means a tremendous challenge to
our Society. The encounter with such a population, with such a new phenomenon, shouldn’t
be left to the spontaneous inertia of the oncoming facts: what has already happened in
countries with an older tradition, prevents us of any kind of passivity. A well planed social
policy, that takes into account these complex reality that surrounds us, is badly needed.
Such a Policy should be able to give support to pertinent interventions, based on equality
and mutual knowledg
