In covering politics the media project certain perspectives through the mediation of reality in the context of specific interpretative frameworks. This particularly occurs in the coverage of political scandal because of the symbolic capital represented by politicians' good reputation. This article analyses cases of political corruption in Spain and Britain in the 1990s. Employing the notion of news icon suggested by Bennett as a form of frame, and throughout qualitative and quantitative content analysis, this research examines the presence and action of news icons in Britain and Spain. The study shows that press coverage used news icons in the form of vivid word phrases, which were reproduced and maintained beyond the time of the news events being reported. They functioned as symbolic devices encapsulating in a condensed way a whole story, becoming emblematic and evocative of a whole political period. The research concludes that the power of the press lies not so much in the action of investigative journalism but also more fundamentally in the interpretative framework which the media employ to report events

Design and development of a cross-European employability training for older jobseekers

The importance of social networking for effective job-search has been clearly established in various studies. Social networks (social capital) represent a constituent component of employability: the potential of an individual to gain employment and to stay employed. However, not everyone feels comfortable using informal search methods or networking. Besides, with the rise of social media, social networking increasingly takes place in online environments. To those less familiar with social media this constitutes an extra hurdle regarding effective deployment of informal job-search methods. As a consequence, especially older (45+) jobseekers are considered at risk of missing out on job opportunities. The web2jobs project aims at providing a solution by developing a cross-European training on the use of social media for job search, targeting older jobseekers. This paper presents the requirements for such a training, as they evolved from a needs-assessment carried out in eight European countries. While starting with a focus on social media for job-search, the needs assessment made clear that the training should address other dimensions of employability, next to the social capital/social networking dimension, as well. The paper analyses the requirements derived from the needs assessment in terms of all four dimensions of employability (i.e. adaptability, human capital, social capital, and career identity) and argues that both adaptability and human capital on the one hand and social capital and career identity on the other hand, act in concert. Finally, the paper outlines the web2jobs employability training resulting from an iterative design and development process, involving two pilots running in eight countries. The web2jobs project has been funded with support from the European Commission (Key Activity 3 / Multilateral Projects. Effects of Dry-Land Training Programs on Swimming Turn Performance: A Systematic Review.

Swimming coaches have prescribed dry-land training programs over the years to improve the overall swimming performance (starts, clean swimming, turns and finish). The main aim of the present systematic review was to examine the effects of dry-land strength and conditioning programs on swimming turns. Four online databases were scrutinised, data were extracted using the Preferred PRISMA guidelines and the PEDro scale was applied. A total of 1259 articles were retrieved from database searches. From the 19 studies which were full-text evaluated, six studies were included in the review process. The review indicated that plyometric, strength, ballistic and core training programs were implemented for improving swimming turn performance. Strength, ballistic and plyometric training focusing on neural enhancement seem to be effective for improving swimming turn performance. The data related to training of the core were not conclusive. Coaches should consider incorporating exercises focusing on improving the neuromuscular factor of the leg-extensor muscles into their daily dry-land training programs. More researches are needed to provide a better understanding of the training methods effects and training organisations for improving swimming turn performance.post-print626 K

Traditional and Health-Related Philanthropy: The Role of Resources and Personality

I study the relationships of resources and personality characteristics to charitable giving, postmortem organ donation, and blood donation in a nationwide sample of persons in households in the Netherlands. I find that specific personality characteristics are related to specific types of giving: agreeableness to blood donation, empathic concern to charitable giving, and prosocial value orientation to postmortem organ donation. I find that giving has a consistently stronger relation to human and social capital than to personality. Human capital increases giving; social capital increases giving only when it is approved by others. Effects of prosocial personality characteristics decline at higher levels of these characteristics. Effects of empathic concern, helpfulness, and social value orientations on generosity are mediated by verbal proficiency and church attendance.
