    This demonstration utilizes relief printmaking in combination with found, repurposed fabrics and basic machine and hand sewing to create quilted collages. Utilizing old bed sheets and hand-me-down fabrics, hardware store plywood, basic black ink, and green cleanup with vegetable oil and dish soap, fabric printing is both a low-cost and sustainable alternative to paper. Piecing and collaging elements helps to overcome size limitations, opening up the possibilities for ambitious sculptures and immersive print-based installations

    Incidence of mental health conditions following pediatric hospital admissions: analysis of a national database

    IntroductionDespite increasing survival of children following hospitalization, hospitalization may increase iatrogenic risk for mental health (MH) disorders, including acute stress, post-traumatic stress, anxiety, or depression. Using a population-based retrospective cohort study, we assessed the rates of new MH diagnoses during the 12 months after hospitalization, including the moderating effects of ICU exposure.Study design/methodsThis was a retrospective case control study using the Truven Health Analytics insurance database. Inclusion criteria included children aged 3–21 years, insurance enrollment for >12 months before and after hospital admission. We excluded children with hospitalization 2 years prior to index hospitalization and those with prior MH diagnoses. We extracted admission type, ICD-10 codes, demographic, clinical, and service coordination variables from the database. We established age- and sex-matched cohorts of non-hospitalized children. The primary outcome was a new MH diagnosis. Multivariable regression methods examined the risk of incident MH disorder(s) between hospitalized and non-hospitalized children. Among hospitalized children, we further assessed effect modification from ICU (vs. non-ICU) stay, admission year, length of stay, medical complexity, and geographic region.ResultsNew MH diagnoses occurred among 19,418 (7%) hospitalized children, 3,336 (8%) ICU-hospitalized children and 28,209 (5%) matched healthy controls. The most common MH diagnoses were anxiety (2.5%), depression (1.9%), and stress/trauma (2.2%) disorders. Hospitalization increased the odds of new MH diagnoses by 12.3% (OR: 1.123, 95% CI: 1.079–1.17) and ICU-hospitalization increased these odds by 63% (OR: 1.63, 95% CI: 1.483–1.79) as compared to matched, non-hospitalized children. Children with non-complex chronic diseases (OR: 2.91, 95% CI: 2.84–2.977) and complex chronic diseases (OR: 5.16, 95% CI: 5.032–5.289) had a substantially higher risk for new MH diagnoses after hospitalization compared to patients with acute illnesses.ConclusionPediatric hospitalization is associated with higher, long-term risk of new mental health diagnoses, and ICU hospitalization further increases that risk within 12 months of the acute episode. Acute care hospitalization confers iatrogenic risks that warrant long-term mental and behavioral health follow-up

    The MOSDEF Survey: Kinematic and Structural Evolution of Star-Forming Galaxies at 1.4≀z≀3.81.4\leq z\leq 3.8

    We present ionized gas kinematics for 681 galaxies at z∌1.4−3.8z\sim 1.4-3.8 from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field survey, measured using models which account for random galaxy-slit misalignments together with structural parameters derived from CANDELS Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging. Kinematics and sizes are used to derive dynamical masses. Baryonic masses are estimated from stellar masses and inferred gas masses from dust-corrected star formation rates (SFRs) and the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation. We measure resolved rotation for 105 galaxies. For the remaining 576 galaxies we use models based on HST imaging structural parameters together with integrated velocity dispersions and baryonic masses to statistically constrain the median ratio of intrinsic ordered to disordered motion, V/σV,0V/\sigma_{V,0}. We find that V/σV,0V/\sigma_{V,0} increases with increasing stellar mass and decreasing specific SFR (sSFR). These trends may reflect marginal disk stability, where systems with higher gas fractions have thicker disks. For galaxies with detected rotation we assess trends between their kinematics and mass, sSFR, and baryon surface density (ÎŁbar,e\Sigma_{\mathrm{bar},e}). Intrinsic dispersion correlates most with ÎŁbar,e\Sigma_{\mathrm{bar},e} and velocity correlates most with mass. By comparing dynamical and baryonic masses, we find that galaxies at z∌1.4−3.8z\sim 1.4-3.8 are baryon dominated within their effective radii (RER_E), with Mdyn/Mbaryon increasing over time. The inferred baryon fractions within RER_E, fbarf_{\mathrm{bar}}, decrease over time, even at fixed mass, size, or surface density. At fixed redshift, fbarf_{\mathrm{bar}} does not appear to vary with stellar mass but increases with decreasing RER_E and increasing ÎŁbar,e\Sigma_{\mathrm{bar},e}. For galaxies at z≄2z\geq2, the median inferred baryon fractions generally exceed 100%. We discuss possible explanations and future avenues to resolve this tension.Comment: Accepted to ApJ.     Using unoccupied aerial vehicles (UAVs) to map seagrass cover from Sentinel-2 imagery

    Seagrass habitats are ecologically valuable and play an important role in sequestering and storing carbon. There is, thus, a need to estimate seagrass percentage cover in diverse environments in support of climate change mitigation, marine spatial planning and coastal zone management. In situ approaches are accurate but time-consuming, expensive and may not represent the larger spatial units collected by satellite imaging. Hence, there is a need for a consistent methodology that uses accurate point-based field surveys to deliver high-quality mapping of percentage seagrass cover at large spatial scales. Here, we develop a three-step approach that combines in situ (quadrats), aerial (unoccupied aerial vehicle—UAV) and satellite data to map percentage seagrass cover at Turneffe Atoll, Belize, the largest atoll in the northern hemisphere. First, the optical bands of four UAV images were used to calculate seagrass cover, in combination with in situ data. The seagrass cover calculated from the UAV was then used to develop training and validation datasets to estimate seagrass cover in Sentinel-2 pixels. Next, non-seagrass areas were identified in the Sentinel-2 data and removed by object-based classification, followed by a pixel-based regression to calculate seagrass percentage cover. Using this approach, percentage seagrass cover was mapped using UAVs (R2 = 0.91 between observed and mapped distributions) and using Sentinel-2 data (R2 = 0.73). This work provides the first openly available and explorable map of seagrass percentage cover across Turneffe Atoll, where we estimate approximately 242 km2 of seagrass above 10% cover is located. We estimate that this approach offers 30 times more data for training satellite data than traditional methods, therefore presenting a substantial reduction in cost-per-point for data. Furthermore, the increase in data helps deliver a high-quality seagrass cover map, suitable for resolving trends of deteriorating, stable or recovering seagrass environments at 10 m2 resolution to underpin evidence-based management and conservation of seagrass.publishedVersio

    The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) consensus statement on the definition and scope of synbiotics

    In May 2019, the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) convened a panel of nutritionists, physiologists and microbiologists to review the definition and scope of synbiotics. The panel updated the definition of a synbiotic to “a mixture comprising live microorganisms and substrate(s) selectively utilized by host microorganisms that confers a health benefit on the host”. The panel concluded that defining synbiotics as simply a mixture of probiotics and prebiotics could suppress the innovation of synbiotics that are designed to function cooperatively. Requiring that each component must meet the evidence and dose requirements for probiotics and prebiotics individually could also present an obstacle. Rather, the panel clarified that a complementary synbiotic, which has not been designed so that its component parts function cooperatively, must be composed of a probiotic plus a prebiotic, whereas a synergistic synbiotic does not need to be so. A synergistic synbiotic is a synbiotic for which the substrate is designed to be selectively utilized by the co-administered microorganisms. This Consensus Statement further explores the levels of evidence (existing and required), safety, effects upon targets and implications for stakeholders of the synbiotic concept

    Systematic review of studies examining transtibial prosthetic socket pressures with changes in device alignment

    Suitable lower-limb prosthetic sockets must provide an adequate distribution of the pressures created from standing and ambulation. A systematic search for articles reporting socket pressure changes in response to device alignment perturbation was carried out, identifying 11 studies. These were then evaluated using the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists guidelines for a state-of-the-science review. Each study used a design where participants acted as their own controls. Results were available for 52 individuals and 5 forms of alignment perturbation. Four studies were rated as having moderate internal and external validity, the remainder were considered to have low validity. Significant limitations in study design, reporting quality and in representation of results and the suitability of calculations of statistical significance were evident across articles. Despite the high inhomogeneity of study designs, moderate evidence supports repeatable changes in pressure distribution for specific induced changes in component alignment. However, there also appears to be a significant individual component to alignment responses. Future studies should aim to include greater detail in the presentation of results to better support later meta-analyses

    Corporate governance and financial constraints on strategic turnarounds

    The paper extends the Robbins and Pearce (1992) two-stage turnaround response model to include governance factors. In addition to the retrenchment and recovery, the paper proposes the addition of a realignment stage, referring specifically to the re-alignment of expectations of principal and agent groups. The realignment stage imposes a threshold that must be crossed before the retrenchment and hence recovery stage can be entered. Crossing this threshold is problematic to the extent that the interests of governance-stakeholder groups diverge in a crisis situation. The severity of the crisis impacts on the bases of strategy contingent asset valuation leading to the fragmentation of stakeholder interests. In some cases the consequence may be that management are prevented from carrying out turnarounds by governance constraints. The paper uses a case study to illustrate these dynamics, and like the Robbins and Pearce study, it focuses on the textile industry. A longitudinal approach is used to show the impact of the removal of governance constraints. The empirical evidence suggests that such financial constraints become less serious to the extent that there is a functioning market for corporate control. Building on governance research and turnaround literature, the paper also outlines the general case necessary and sufficient conditions for successful turnarounds

    Diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis in Screened Populations

    Objective Cystic fibrosis (CF) can be difficult to diagnose, even when newborn screening (NBS) tests yield positive results. This challenge is exacerbated by the multitude of NBS protocols, misunderstandings about screening vs diagnostic tests, and the lack of guidelines for presumptive diagnoses. There is also confusion regarding the designation of age at diagnosis. Study design To improve diagnosis and achieve standardization in definitions worldwide, the CF Foundation convened a committee of 32 experts with a mission to develop clear and actionable consensus guidelines on diagnosis of CF with an emphasis on screened populations, especially the newborn population. A comprehensive literature review was performed with emphasis on relevant articles published during the past decade. Results After reviewing the common screening protocols and outcome scenarios, 14 of 27 consensus statements were drafted that apply to screened populations. These were approved by 80% or more of the participants. Conclusions It is recommended that all diagnoses be established by demonstrating dysfunction of the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) channel, initially with a sweat chloride test and, when needed, potentially with newer methods assessing membrane transport directly, such as intestinal current measurements. Even in babies with 2 CF-causing mutations detected via NBS, diagnosis must be confirmed by demonstrating CFTR dysfunction. The committee also recommends that the latest classifications identified in the Clinical and Functional Translation of CFTR project [http://www.cftr2.org/index.php] should be used to aid with CF diagnosis. Finally, to avoid delays in treatment, we provide guidelines for presumptive diagnoses and recommend how to determine the age of diagnosis

    Perinatal care and breastfeeding education during the COVID-19 pandemic: Perspectives from Kenyan mothers and healthcare workers

    The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on breastfeeding (BF) practices in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is not well understood. Modifications in BF guidelines and delivery platforms for breastfeeding education during the COVID-19 pandemic are hypothesised to have affected BF practices. We aimed to understand the experiences with perinatal care, BF education and practice among Kenyan mothers who delivered infants during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted in-depth key informant interviews with 45 mothers who delivered infants between March 2020 and December 2021, and 26 health care workers (HCW) from four health facilities in Naivasha, Kenya. While mothers noted that HCWs provided quality care and BF counselling, individual BF counselling was cited to be less frequent than before the pandemic due to altered conditions in health facilities and COVID-19 safety protocols. Mothers stated that some HCW messages emphasised the immunologic importance of BF. However, knowledge among mothers about the safety of BF in the context of COVID-19 was limited, with few participants reporting specific counselling or educational materials on topics such as COVID-19 transmission through human milk and the safety of nursing during a COVID-19 infection. Mothers described COVID-19-related income loss and lack of support from family and friends as the major challenge to practising exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) as they wished or planned. COVID-19 restrictions limited or prevented mothers’ access to familial support at facilities and at home, causing them stress and fatigue. In some cases, mothers reported job loss, time spent seeking new means of employment and food insecurity as causes for milk insufficiency, which contributed to mixed feeding before 6 months. The COVID-19 pandemic created changes to the perinatal experience for mothers. While messages about the importance of practising EBF were provided, altered HCW education delivery methods, reduced social support and food insecurity limit EBF practices for mothers in this context
