    Coexistence of Quantum Theory and Special Relativity in signaling scenarios

    The coexistence between Quantum Mechanics and Special Relativity is usually formulated in terms of the no-signaling condition. Several authors have even suggested that this condition should be included between the basic postulates of Quantum Theory. However, there are several scenarios where signaling is, in principle, possible: based on previous results and the analysis of the relation between unitarity and signaling we present an example of a two-particle interferometric arrangement for which the dynamics is, in principle, compatible with superluminal transmission of information. This type of non-locality is not in the line of Bell's theorem, but closer in spirit to the one-particle acausality studied by Hegerfeldt and others. We analyze in this paper the meaning of this non-locality and how to preserve the coexistence of the two fundamental theories in this signaling scenario.Comment: See also the comment by G C Hegerfeldt in the online version of the journal, including more reference

    Physics for non-physicists - Two bio-degrees reforms in Spanish universities: Health Biology and Biology

    We present a review of two different innovative experiences of Physics education for Bio-Sciences in two Spanish Universities - the Health Biology degree of the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares (UAH) and the Biology degree of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM). Both experiences took place simultaneously and coincident with the implementation of Bologna Plan. Although they were developed under different contextual constraints, set by the respective Faculties, they share a number of similar pedagogical strategies which are analyzed.     Diet of three large pelagic fishes associated with drifting fish aggregating devices (DFADs) in the western equatorial Indian Ocean

    Dieta de tres peces pelágicos de gran tamaño asociados a agregaciones de peces bajo objetos flotantes (DFADs) en el Océano Índico ecuatorial occidental Los objetos flotantes congregan distintas especies de peces en aguas tropicales marinas. Se capturaron tres especies depredadoras: atún de aleta amarilla (Thunnus albacares), petos (Acanthocybium solandri) y llampugas (Coryphaena hippurus) en agregaciones bajo objetos flotantes en el Océano Índico occidental, para caracterizar su dieta y determinar si se alimentan de organismos asociados a las DFADs. Los atunes de aleta amarilla no se alimentaron de presas asociadas a objetos flotantes, mientras los petos y llampugas sí explotaron los recursos agregados a estos objetos flotantes, aunque predominantemente se alimentaron de otros organismos no asociados a ellos. En atunes de aleta amarilla y en llampugas asociados a FADs se observó una predación oportunista en la superficie de agrupaciones de crustáceos estomatópodos pero no así en los petos. We captured three predatory species: yellow fin tuna (Thunnus albacares), wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri) and dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) from aggregations under DFADs in the Western Indian Ocean to characterize their diet and determine whether they fed on other DFAD associated organisms. Yellowfin tuna did not feed on DFAD–associated prey, while wahoo and dolphinfish did exploit resources aggregated by the DFADs, though they predominantly fed on other non–associated organisms. Opportunistic feeding on surface swarming stomatopod crustaceans was observed in yellowfin tuna and dolphinfish associated with FADs, but was not observed in wahoo.     Diffusion on a solid surface: Anomalous is normal

    We present a numerical study of classical particles diffusing on a solid surface. The particles' motion is modeled by an underdamped Langevin equation with ordinary thermal noise. The particle-surface interaction is described by a periodic or a random two dimensional potential. The model leads to a rich variety of different transport regimes, some of which correspond to anomalous diffusion such as has recently been observed in experiments and Monte Carlo simulations. We show that this anomalous behavior is controlled by the friction coefficient, and stress that it emerges naturally in a system described by ordinary canonical Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics

    Toward the full CFD Simulation of expansion tubes

    In order to perform ground testing in expansion tubes, it is highly desirable to characterize the facility by CFD, since the flow processing is very complex. Nevertheless 2D o 3D modelling requires tackling several questions that remains opened. The main challenge is to include piston dynamics, but for that, launcher station pressure loss must be accurately simulated. This paper explores conceptual CFD models aiming to demonstrate that these effects can be included accurately. Results show that there are significant pressure losses at the launcher brought by the supersonic flow jets found after the slots. The aim is to clear the path towards the development of a full facility model, including the long time-scale piston motion couped to the gas dynamics at the whole machine

    Predictor variables of the perception of success: Differential aspects in route runners

    Se pretendía conocer qué relaciones predictivas presentaban la motivación, el compromiso a correr, la adicción negativa a correr y la ansiedad precompetitiva, sobre la percepción del éxito en una amplia muestra de 1795 corredores de fondo en ruta (1105 españoles, 690 mexicanos). De ellos el 85.65% fueron hombres con una edad de M=38.98 (DT=10.45), y 14.35% mujeres, con una edad M=37.88 (DT=9.80). La recogida de datos se llevó a cabo mediante las adaptaciones al castellano del Perception of Success Questionnaire (POSQ), Motivations of Marathoners Scales-34 (MOMS-34), Commitment to Running Scale-11 (CR-11) y Revised Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2R). Se obtuvo que los valores en las orientaciones de meta de los corredores son medios y similares, aunque significativamente mayores en la muestra mexicana, debido a su mayor compromiso y motivaciones, así como a las diferencias culturales entre ambas nacionalidades. Los modelos predictores de la percepción del éxito obtenidos resultaron muy similares por nacionalidades, pero diferenciados por sexos, obteniendo altas varianzas explicativasWe pretended to find out which predictive relationships would be introduced by motivation, commitment to run, negative addiction to run and pre-competition anxiety, concerning the winning perception of a broad sample of 1795 track long-distance runners (1105 Spanish, 690 Mexicans). The data was obtained by adapting to Spanish the following: “Perception of Success Questionnaire” (POSQ), “Motivations of Marathoners Scales-34 (MOMS-34), Commitment to Running Scale-11 (CR-11) and Revised Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2R). The values obtained on the winning orientations of the runners were average and similar, although significantly higher in the Mexican sample, due to their higher commitment and motivation, as well as the cultural differences between these nationalities. The predicting models of the success perception obtained were very similar by nationality, but differentiated by sex, obtaining high explicatory variance

    Robust signatures in the current-voltage characteristics of DNA molecules oriented between two graphene nanoribbon electrodes

    In this work we numerically calculate the electric current through three kinds of DNA sequences (telomeric, \lambda-DNA, and p53-DNA) described by different heuristic models. A bias voltage is applied between two zig-zag edged graphene contacts attached to the DNA segments, while a gate terminal modulates the conductance of the molecule. The calculation of current is performed by integrating the transmission function (calculated using the lattice Green's function) over the range of energies allowed by the chemical potentials. We show that a telomeric DNA sequence, when treated as a quantum wire in the fully coherent low-temperature regime, works as an excellent semiconductor. Clear steps are apparent in the current-voltage curves of telomeric sequences and are present independent of lengths and sequence initialisation at the contacts. The current-voltage curves suggest the existence of stepped structures independent of length and sequencing initialisation at the contacts. We also find that the molecule-electrode coupling can drastically influence the magnitude of the current. The difference between telomeric DNA and other DNA, such as \lambda-DNA and DNA for the tumour suppressor p53, is particularly visible in the length dependence of the current

    Conductance of graphene nanoribbon junctions and the tight binding model

    Planar carbon-based electronic devices, including metal/semiconductor junctions, transistors and interconnects, can now be formed from patterned sheets of graphene. Most simulations of charge transport within graphene-based electronic devices assume an energy band structure based on a nearest-neighbour tight binding analysis. In this paper, the energy band structure and conductance of graphene nanoribbons and metal/semiconductor junctions are obtained using a third nearest-neighbour tight binding analysis in conjunction with an efficient nonequilibrium Green’s function formalism. We find significant differences in both the energy band structure and conductance obtained with the two approximations
