BMI and low bone mass in an elderly male nursing home population
Little is known about osteoporosis in institutionalized older adults. Risk factors such as low body mass index (BMI) have been investigated in female populations, but remain understudied in men. The objective of this study was to examine characteristics of older men residing in a nursing home who received bone mineral density evaluations.
57 male Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) nursing home residents were screened for osteoporosis using a peripheral dual X-ray (pDXA) technique. T-scores were categorized into three groups: normal (0 > -1); osteopenic (-1 to -2.49); osteoporotic (< -2.5).
Average age was 76.2 years (standard deviation = 11.5; range: 48-100). T-scores indicated that 37.3% of the population was normal, 35.6% osteopenic, and 27.1% osteoporotic. 35.6% of patients had normal BMIs, 3.4% were underweight, 47.5% were overweight, and 13.6% were considered obese. There was a high prevalence of overweight and obese individuals (61.1%) in the osteopenic and osteoporotic groups.
As expected, there was a high prevalence of low bone mass in our population (62%). However, overweight and obese men were more likely to have osteoporosis and osteopenia, contrary to literature and clinical knowledge. This finding may be partially explained by the prevalence of sedentary lifestyle and relative lack of weight-bearing activity in this group of men
Quantum ESPRESSO: a modular and open-source software project for quantum simulations of materials
Quantum ESPRESSO is an integrated suite of computer codes for
electronic-structure calculations and materials modeling, based on
density-functional theory, plane waves, and pseudopotentials (norm-conserving,
ultrasoft, and projector-augmented wave). Quantum ESPRESSO stands for "opEn
Source Package for Research in Electronic Structure, Simulation, and
Optimization". It is freely available to researchers around the world under the
terms of the GNU General Public License. Quantum ESPRESSO builds upon
newly-restructured electronic-structure codes that have been developed and
tested by some of the original authors of novel electronic-structure algorithms
and applied in the last twenty years by some of the leading materials modeling
groups worldwide. Innovation and efficiency are still its main focus, with
special attention paid to massively-parallel architectures, and a great effort
being devoted to user friendliness. Quantum ESPRESSO is evolving towards a
distribution of independent and inter-operable codes in the spirit of an
open-source project, where researchers active in the field of
electronic-structure calculations are encouraged to participate in the project
by contributing their own codes or by implementing their own ideas into

Land- and water-based exercise intervention in women with fibromyalgia: the al-andalus physical activity randomised controlled trial
Background
The al-Andalus physical activity intervention study is a randomised control trial to investigate the effectiveness of a land- and water-based exercise intervention for reducing the overall impact of fibromyalgia (primary outcome), and for improving tenderness and pain-related measures, body composition, functional capacity, physical activity and sedentary behaviour, fatigue, sleep quality, health-related quality of life, and cognitive function (secondary outcomes) in women with fibromyalgia.
Methods/Design
One hundred eighty women with fibromyalgia (age range: 35-65 years) will be recruited from local associations of fibromyalgia patients in Andalucía (Southern Spain). Patients will be randomly assigned to a usual care (control) group (n = 60), a water-based exercise intervention group (n = 60) or a land-based exercise intervention group (n = 60). Participants in the usual care group will receive general physical activity guidelines and participants allocated in the intervention groups will attend three non-consecutive training sessions (60 min each) per week during 24 weeks. Both exercise interventions will consist of aerobic, muscular strength and flexibility exercises. We will also study the effect of a detraining period (i.e., 12 weeks with no exercise intervention) on the studied variables.
Discussion
Our study attempts to reduce the impact of fibromyalgia and improve patients' health status by implementing two types of exercise interventions. Results from this study will help to assess the efficacy of exercise interventions for the treatment of fibromyalgia. If the interventions would be effective, this study will provide low-cost and feasible alternatives for health professionals in the management of fibromyalgia. Diabetes mellitus in older persons
The relative importance and mechanisms of deficient insulin secretion versus deficient action during aging are still debated. Whatever mechanisms eventually explain the emergence of impaired glucose tolerance during aging, the clinically important extrinsic modifiers of glycemic levels include diet, medications, activity, and chronic illness and stress. Although prospective studies are not available in the elderly, retrospective studies suggest that good blood glucose control reduces the likelihood and severity of stroke, cardiovascular disease, visual impairment, nephropathy, infections, and even cognitive dysfunction. Good control also seems to reduce nocturia, polyuria, and hypovolemia. Therapy of older persons begins with diet, exercise, and oral agents, failing which, insulin is employed. Since many of the newer oral agents carry less risk of hypoglycemia, achieving tighter control in the elderly has become more feasible

International audiencePolyethylene (PE), one of the simplest and most used aliphatic polymers, is generally provided with a number of additives, in particular antioxidants, because of its tendency to get oxidized. Carbonyl defects, a product of the oxidation of PE, are occurring in various forms, in particular saturated ones, known as ketones, where a C=O double bond substitutes a CH group, andvarious unsaturated ones, i.e., with further missing hydrogens. Many experimental investigations of the optical properties in the visible-UV range mainly attribute thephotoluminescence of PE to one specific kind of unsaturated carbonyls, following analogies to the emission spectra of similar small molecules. However, the reason why saturated carbonyls should not be optically detected is not clear. We investigated the optical properties of PE with and without carbonyl defects using perturbative GW and the Bethe-Salpeter equation in order to take intoaccount excitonic effects. We discuss the calculated excitonic states in comparison with experimental absorption-emission energies and the stability of both saturated and unsaturated carbonyl defects. We conclude that the unsaturated defects are indeed the best candidate for the luminescence ofoxidized PE, and the reason is mainly due to oscillator strengths
