A Needs Assessment Study for an Ongoing Professional Development Program Called Some Saint for Subs for Substitute Teachers in Florida Public School Districts

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a need for an ongoing professional development program for substitute teachers in Florida public school districts. For some time now, many public school districts in Florida have faced huge teacher and substitute teacher shortages which has a substantial academic impact on the students who attend these schools. A survey was administered to principals, assistant principals, certified teachers, and substitute teachers who work in a public Florida school district to determine if there was a need for talented substitute teachers in their area. Some questions on the survey were modeled after Marzano evaluation questions for certified teachers to see how a talented substitute teacher could be identified as effective while other questions focus on the demographics and substitute teaching experience of those who currently work for a public school district in Florida. Findings include that Florida school districts needed and would benefit from an ongoing professional development program for substitute teachers. The researcher also found that the ongoing professional development program created for substitute teachers, Some Saint for Subs, could increase student achievement as well as solve the substitute inadequacy in Florida public school districts. Recommendations include time (a full school year) and money to thoroughly review the effectiveness of Some Saint for Subs

Nucleation of Superconductivity in a Mesoscopic Loop of Finite Width

The normal/superconducting phase boundary Tc has been calculated for mesoscopic loops, as a function of an applied perpendicular magnetic field H. While for thin-wire loops and filled disks the Tc(H) curves are well known, the intermediate case, namely mesoscopic loops of finite wire width, have been studied much less. The linearized first Ginzburg-Landau equation is solved with the proper normal/vacuum boundary conditions both at the internal and at the external loop radius. For thin-wire loops the Tc(H) oscillations are perfectly periodic, and the Tc(H) background is parabolic (this is the usual Little-Parks effect). For loops of thicker wire width, there is a crossover magnetic field above which Tc(H) becomes quasi-linear, with the period identical to the Tc(H) of a filled disk (i.e. pseudoperiodic oscillations). This dimensional transition is similar to the 2D-3D transition for thin films in a parallel field, where vortices start penetrating the material as soon as the film thickness exceeds the temperature dependent coherence length by a factor 1.8. For the presently studied loops, the crossover point is controlled by a similar condition. In the high field '3D' regime, a giant vortex state establishes, where only a surface superconducting sheath near the sample's outer radius is present.Comment: 7 pages text, 2 EPS figures, uses LaTeX's elsart.sty, proceedings of the First Euroconference on "Vortex Matter in Superconductors", held in Crete (18-24 september 1999

The Voice: The Shareholders' Motives Behind Corporate Donations

What motivates shareholders to become prosocial activists? At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, political and media attention demanded covid-related donations from large corporations. We study shareholders' support for such donations exploiting the heightened media scrutiny from annual general meetings. We find that reputational gains to shareholders of donating firms led prominent individual shareholders to seek donations. In contrast, large institutional shareholders, who are hardly associated with specific corporations in their portfolios, preferred to donate themselves and opposed donations in their footprints. This mechanism also operates outside pandemic times and points to media attention to grow support for prosocial decisions

Simulation games are widely used in applications ranging from professional training at different levels of realism (serious games like Hard-Core Simulator) to entertainment simulators (Casual Simulators). In this project, a serious game of the simulator category was developed, focused on extinguishing a small fire with the main types of extinguishers available in the market. In this simulator, the user can face fire situations in Class A and/or Class C objects and, for those situations, can choose between a H2O extinguisher and a CO2 extinguisher. Subsequently, the simulator was tested, with the help of volunteers, to evaluate its applicability as an educational tool. At the end of the tests, the volunteers answered to an evaluation survey about on the simulator and its contents. From the obtained results it was verified that the volunteers do not know the different classes of fire and the different types of extinguishing agents. In this context, this project emerges as a useful tool to spread content and to train people on firefighting.
