The aim of this study was to explore the use of social media for political participation in Saudi Arabia taking the case of the Jeddah 2009 floods as an example. Data were collected for this qualitative study between 2010 and 2012 and were analyzed with the help of NVivo, a software for qualitative data analysis. The study followed the principles of thematic analysis to analyze 40 posts and the readers’ comments on them from YouTube, Facebook, an online community, and Al Arabiya site. The findings of this study show that people used social media to express their feelings and emotions about the loss of lives, express their opinions about what happened and call for action about what should happen or organize themselves to take part in volunteer work. The results of this research contribute to an understanding of the role of social media in encouraging political\ud participation in countries where participation in public affairs in some cases is not encouraged and in others, for example, street protests is not permitted

Motivation and leader-member-exchange theories applied to the General Authority of Civil Aviation in Saudi Arabia and their effect on employees' job performance

Motivation and its effect on employees’ performance is a broad, interesting, and important issue particularly for Human Resources Management (HRM). Motivation is the power behind individuals’ actions. For organisations’ high performance and maximum productivity motivation, programmes should be efficiently utilized. Leader Member Exchange (LMX) which is employed as a mediator in this empirical study between employees' motivation and job performance has also its influence on employees' job performance. Researchers have investigated motivation and its effect on job performance and developed theories which indicate and reflect the importance of these topics to organisations. The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) is the organization of concern in this study. GACA is a public sector organisation which is located in Saudi Arabia. It has about 2500 employees. A quantitative methodology was employed to collect data from GACA's employees where 480 questionnaires were administered to all sectors of GACA in the headquarters in Jeddah, of which 319 were usable to be analysed. Exploratory factor analysis was employed to purify the refine factors of the main constructs, followed by confirmatory factor analysis to verify the factors and determine the constructs' psychometric properties. The hypothesised relationships were tested by employing structural equation modelling based on partial least square procedures. Mediation effects were examined using the Sobel test. The findings indicate that factors were reliable, valid and consistent with the employed motivation and LMX theories. Details of the nineteen factors produced from the five constructs and four dimensions of the conceptual model Figure 3.2 are presented in chapters five and six. All but two hypotheses of this study were supported, the exceptions being (H4: Job security and LMX are positively related, and H8, Work environment and LMX are positively related) which were rejected, as the relationships were not significant. This implies that employees' motivation in its all different forms has strong influence on employees' job performance when properly implemented and utilized. However in regard to GACA, which is a public sector organisation, the respondents' responses suggest that employees are not influenced by the motivation system as there is strong concern about, for example, the opportunities for training and development courses, rewards, incentives, allowances, promotion, HRM practices, etc., which imply that reform is needed and consequently job performance is not high. In reform of the motivation system, the administration or top management should take a strategic approach that is factual, effective and efficient, which would reflect on HRM practices, human resource development, LMX and all related parties. This would structure and constitute a much better and more constructive work environment, conductive to high job performance

Reports that describe abnormalities of the muscles and tendons of the leg and foot are important with regard to understanding the function of the lower limb and correlating these abnormalities with the clinical aspects. Variations in the insertion of the extensor hallucis longus muscle were studied in 60 adult human cadavers. Three different patterns of insertion were noticed. Pattern I (65%): the extensor hallucis longus muscle had a single tendinous insertion on the dorsal aspect of the base of the distal phalanx of the big toe. Pattern II (26.67%): the muscle terminated in two tendons. Pattern III (8.33%): the muscle terminated in three tendinous slips. Various sites of insertion of the extensor hallucis longus muscle were recorded other than the dorsal aspect of the base of the distal phalanx of the big toe. These were the dorsal aspect of the base of the proximal phalanx of the big toe and the capsule of the first metatarso-phalangeal joint or a connection with the tendon of the extensor hallucis brevis. The frequency of occurrence of lateral deviation of the big toe at the metatarsphalangeal joint (hallux valgus) was recorded. It is suggested that the presence of these variations in the insertion of the extensor hallucis longus muscle may have a role in explaining its association with hallux valgus

The development of banking digitalization continues and has a significant impact on the market, plus the pandemic situation that has changed people's consumption and daily lifestyles. In addition, the use of smartphones as a daily necessity has changed the perspective of seeing the banking industry, which is a provider of financial services that collect public funds. The factors of service quality and Trust are also determinants of customer loyalty. This study aimed to determine the effect of E-Servqual and Satisfactions on Trust and their impact on Loyalty. This research is causal, and the research instrument is a questionnaire with a purposive sampling technique with 165 respondents. This research method uses path analysis with SPSS tools. The results showed a positive relationship between E-Servqual on the formation of Trust, the effect of Satisfaction on the formation of Trust, the influence of Satisfaction on the formation of Loyalty, the influence of Trust on the formation of Loyalty. Another finding is that E-Servqual does not affect the formation of Loyalty. Therefore, the Trust acts as a mediator or intermediary that can form a Loyalty if it already exists. If there is no Trust, then there will be no Loyalty, even though the quality of service is good and Satisfaction already exists in the users, but without Trust, Loyalty will not be created

An Analysis Of Deconvolution: Modeling Reflectivity By Fractionally Integrated Noise

    Get PDF
Reflection coefficients are observed in nature to have stochastic behavior that departs significantly from the white noise model. Conventional deconvolution methods, however, assume reflectivity to be a white noise process. In this paper we analyze the deconvolution process, study the implications of the assumption of white noise, and show that the conventional operator can recover only the white component of reflectivity. A new stochastic model, fractionally integrated noise, is proposed for modeling reflectivity. This model more closely approximates its spectral character and that encompasses white noise as a special case. We discuss different techniques to generalize the conventional deconvolution method based on the new model in order to handle reflectivity that is not white, and compare the results of the conventional and generalized filters using data derived from well logs.Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Which ethical problems are most frequently experienced by ICT women professionals? Which ethical problems experienced by ICT women professionals are of most concern to them as individuals? A quantitative survey of 2,315 Australian ICT professionals of whom 15.4 percent were females revealed that the top 15 most frequently faced ethical problems that the females identified were nearly identical to those identified by males. Of these 15 problems, five were judged to affect females personally. These are overworking staff, blaming others for own mistakes, bullying, unprofessional behavior, and discrimination. Of these five problems, gender only predicted three problems that affect females personally, namely overworking staff, bullying, and discrimination, which women also believed occur more frequently than other problems. Compared to males, a higher percentage of females who selected overworking staff, bullying, and discrimination believed unethical behavior either occurs occasionally or frequently. More importantly, a higher proportion of females compared to males (especially managers and consultants) witnessed or experienced staff being overworked in their workplaces. Similarly, a higher proportion of females compared to males (especially managers and consultants) witnessed or experienced bullying in their workplaces. Finally, a higher proportion of females compared to males (especially man- agers and consultants) witnessed or experienced discrimination in their workplaces. The fact that female consultants and mangers selected these problems as of most concern to them may suggest that the experienced women professionals have a greater concern about these problems than women in junior roles. Regardless, these results are both surprising and concerning and therefore deserving of attention in a future study

Estimation Of Lithologies And Depositional Facies From Wireline Logs

    Get PDF
We approach the problem of identifying facies from well logs though the use of neural networks that perform vector quantization of input data by competitive learning. The method can be used in either an unsupervised or supervised manner. Unsupervised analysis is used to segregate a well into distinct facies classes based on the log behavior. Supervised analysis is used to identify the facies types present in a certain well by making use of the facies identified from cores in a nearby well. The method is suitable for analyzing lithologies and depositional facies of horizontal wells, which are almost never cored, especially if core data is available for nearby vertical wells. Both types of modes are implemented and used for the automatic facies analysis of horizontal wells in Saudi Arabia. In addition to the identification of facies, the method is also able to calculate confidence measures for each analysis that is indicative of how well the analysis procedure can identify those facies given uncertainties in the data. Moreover, constraints derived from human experience and geologic principles can be applied to guide the inference process.Saudi AramcoMassachusetts Institute of Technology.
