    Electron and Photon Scattering on Three-Nucleon Bound States

    A big spectrum of processes induced by real and virtual photons on the 3He and 3H nuclei is theoretically investigated through many examples based on nonrelativistic Faddeev calculations for bound and continuum states. The modern nucleon-nucleon potential AV18 together with the three-nucleon force UrbanaIX is used. The single nucleon current is augmented by explicit pi- and rho-like two-body currents which fulfill the current continuity equation together with the corresponding parts of the AV18 potential. We also employ the Siegert theorem, which induces many-body contributions to the current operator. The interplay of these different dynamical ingredients in the various electromagnetic processes is studied and the theory is compared to the experimental data. Overall we find fair to good agreement but also cases of strong disagreement between theory and experiment, which calls for improved dynamics. In several cases we refer the reader to the work of other groups and compare their results with ours. In addition we list a number of predictions for observables in different processes which would challenge this dynamical scenario even more stringently and systematically.Comment: 154 pages, 80 figures includes as ps files, 21 additional figures as jpeg file

    Empathy’s echo: post-apartheid fellow feeling

    The concept of empathy has been set to work, across a range of fields, to mark a break with the relational patterns of apartheid. Similarly, empathy has been identified, historically, as that which, within apartheid and colonial rule more generally, exceeded or escaped relations of domination. This paper approaches the discourse of empathy from a different angle, taking empathy as a concept embedded in colonial thinking. Given that so many claims to empathy have had recourse to psychoanalysis, the paper focuses on empathy in Freud’s work, specifically Dora’s case and Freud’s analysis of Michelangelo’s Moses, which are read alongside the images and installations of contemporary South African artist, Nandipha Mntambo, in particular her collection of images and installations in The Encounter. Three scenes are conjured wherein empathy confronts its impossibility, but rather than foreclose on empathy as a postapartheid condition, it is through the disclosure of the aporias of empathy that it might be brought into the realm of the ethical through a practice of reinscription and through the figure of Echo

    Deoxyribonuclease 1 (DNASE1, DNase I) and deoxyribonuclease 1-like 3 (DNASE1L3, DNase γ, DNase Y, LS-DNase) are members of a DNASE1 protein family that is defined by similar biochemical properties such as Ca(2+)/Mg(2+)-dependency and an optimal pH of about 7.0 as well as by a high similarity in their nucleic acid and amino acid sequences. In the present study we describe the recombinant expression of rat Dnase1 and murine Dnase1l3 as fusion proteins tagged by their C-terminus to green fluorescent protein in NIH-3T3 fibroblasts and bovine lens epithelial cells. Both enzymes were translocated into the rough endoplasmic reticulum, transported along the entire secretory pathway and finally secreted into the cell culture medium. No nuclear occurrence of the nucleases was detectable. However, deletion of the N-terminal signal peptide of both nucleases resulted in a cytoplasmic and nuclear distribution of both fusion proteins. Dnase1 preferentially hydrolysed ‘naked’ plasmid DNA, whereas Dnase1l3 cleaved nuclear DNA with high activity. Dnase1l3 was able to cleave chromatin in an internucleosomal manner without proteolytic help. By contrast, Dnase1 was only able to achieve this cleavage pattern in the presence of proteases that hydrolysed chromatin-bound proteins. Detailed analysis of murine sera derived from Dnase1 knockout mice revealed that serum contains, besides the major serum nuclease Dnase1, an additional Dnase1l3-like nucleolytic activity, which, in co-operation with Dnase1, might help to suppress anti-DNA autoimmunity by degrading nuclear chromatin released from dying cells
