From Political Economy to Economic Policy: Neo-Developmentalism and the Lula Administration (In Portuguese)

This article critically reviews the design of neo-developmentalist economic policies in Brazil, in the first half of the last decade, and their relationship with the economic policies of the Lula administration after 2006. Paradoxically, the neo-developmentalist policies were implemented jointly with the main (neoliberal) macroeconomic policies which had been introduced earlier. The article reviews the relevant literature, and examines the contradictory nature of this ‘inflection’ of economic policy. So far, this combination of policies has achieved an unquestionable – though provisional – success, despite the persistence of the structural macroeconomic problems due to the continuity of the neoliberal policies

A tanulmány az utóbbi években a növekedés, szegénység és egyenlőtlenség közötti viszonyról folytatott gazdaságpolitikai vitákat tekinti át. E viták központi kérdése az volt, hogy a szegénység megszüntetéséhez és az egyenlőtlenségek csökkentéséhez elegendő-e a piac vezérelte növekedés, vagy sajátos politikai intézkedésekre van szükség, mivel a cél nélküli növekedés elégtelen, vagy akár ellentétes hatású is lehet. A tanulmány ismerteti a viták eredményeit és az inkluzív növekedés (IN) paradigma Világbankon belüli kialakulását. Az IN kritikus vizsgálata ahhoz a felismeréshez vezet, hogy kritikájának az a legjobb módja, ha erőteljesebben újrafogalmazzuk a gazdaságpolitika szegényeket támogató céljait

This article provides an elementary introduction to the basic concepts of the Marxian theory of value and exploitation. The paper explores the concepts of commodity use value and exchange value, concrete and abstract labour, and the relationship between value and money it also explains the nature of the capital relation, the process of exploitation of the wage workers and the extraction of surplus value, and the process of competition. Brazilian Democracy Facing Authoritarian Neoliberalism

This article offers an interpretation of the election of Jair Bolsonaro as President of Brazil, based on the examination of its three political drivers. First the economic and political crisis of global neoliberalism, and their implications for developing countries. Second, the cycles of the Brazilian left, which culminated in the rise and decline of the Workers’ Party (PT). Third, the global rise of an authoritarian modality of neoliberalism in developing as well as advanced economies. The article concludes with an assessment of the strengths and fragilities of the Bolsonaro administration, and the challenges facing the Brazilian left
