Stepping through the door â exploring low-threshold services in Norwegian family centres

This paper presents four categories that show the character of the low-threshold services in Norwegian family centres from the professionals' and parents' perspectives, focusing on accessibility and participation: easy access, low level of bureaucracy, collaborative competences and inclusive arena. This paper is based on an inductive study in three municipalities that have chosen to establish family centres as interdisciplinary co-located services that aim to offer low-threshold services for children and their families. Data were generated through a fieldwork, and participatory observation and interviews were the main source of data. The methodological framework for the analysis was grounded theory, in which the data generation and analysis interchanged throughout the study, and theoretical sampling set the focus for the fieldwork. Exploring the actor's perspective highlighted both strengths and challenges with the low-threshold services in the family centres. The four elements presented emphasize that the value of these low-threshold services are not found in one single hallmark; rather, the value depends on an interaction between different elements that must be addressed when establishing, evaluating and developing low-threshold services in family centres
Research Liaisons: the next layer of Facilitation
This item includes a conference paper and the accompanying presentation given at the conference. The presentation was prerecorded.Research productivity has been greatly enhanced by Research Computing Facilitation teams to help researchers maximize their use of advanced cyberinfrastructure. However, researchers have more technology needs than just advanced cyberinfrastructure, such as data management and instrument device support. To address this, the Academic Engagement team in Michigan Medicine added Research Liaisons as another layer of human support on top of the Facilitation team. The Liaisons are relationship builders. They are assigned to departments to build deep relationships with them and start proactively addressing labsâ technology needs. They also build relationships with other teams, notably enterprise storage, enterprise networking, and research core facilities. Errors in the bisulfite conversion of DNA: modulating inappropriate- and failed-conversion frequencies
Bisulfite treatment can be used to ascertain the methylation states of individual cytosines in DNA. Ideally, bisulfite treatment deaminates unmethylated cytosines to uracils, and leaves 5-methylcytosines unchanged. Two types of bisulfite-conversion error occur: inappropriate conversion of 5-methylcytosine to thymine, and failure to convert unmethylated cytosine to uracil. Conventional bisulfite treatment requires hours of exposure to low-molarity, low-temperature bisulfite (âLowMTâ) and, sometimes, thermal denaturation. An alternate, high-molarity, high-temperature (âHighMTâ) protocol has been reported to accelerate conversion and to reduce inappropriate conversion. We used molecular encoding to obtain validated, individual-molecule data on failed- and inappropriate-conversion frequencies for LowMT and HighMT treatments of both single-stranded and hairpin-linked oligonucleotides. After accounting for bisulfite-independent error, we found that: (i) inappropriate-conversion events accrue predominantly on molecules exposed to bisulfite after they have attained complete or near-complete conversion; (ii) the HighMT treatment is preferable because it yields greater homogeneity among sites and among molecules in conversion rates, and thus yields more reliable data; (iii) different durations of bisulfite treatment will yield data appropriate to address different experimental questions; and (iv) conversion errors can be used to assess the validity of methylation data collected without the benefit of molecular encoding
After LUX: The LZ Program
The LZ program consists of two stages of direct dark matter searches using
liquid Xe detectors. The first stage will be a 1.5-3 tonne detector, while the
last stage will be a 20 tonne detector. Both devices will benefit tremendously
from research and development performed for the LUX experiment, a 350 kg liquid
Xe dark matter detector currently operating at the Sanford Underground
Laboratory. In particular, the technology used for cryogenics and electrical
feedthroughs, circulation and purification, low-background materials and
shielding techniques, electronics, calibrations, and automated control and
recovery systems are all directly scalable from LUX to the LZ detectors.
Extensive searches for potential background sources have been performed, with
an emphasis on previously undiscovered background sources that may have a
significant impact on tonne-scale detectors. The LZ detectors will probe
spin-independent interaction cross sections as low as 5E-49 cm2 for 100 GeV
WIMPs, which represents the ultimate limit for dark matter detection with

Acceptability of the Distress Thermometer and Problem List to community-based telephone cancer helpline operators, and to cancer patients and carers
Background Cancer can be a distressing experience for cancer patients and carers, impacting on psychological, social, physical and spiritual functioning. However, health professionals often fail to detect distress in their patients due to time constraints and a lack of experience. Also, with the focus on the patient, carer needs are often overlooked. This study investigated the acceptability of brief distress screening with the Distress Thermometer (DT) and Problem List (PL) to operators of a community-based telephone helpline, as well as to cancer patients and carers calling the service. Methods Operators (n = 18) monitored usage of the DT and PL with callers (cancer patients/carers, >18 years, and English-speaking) from September-December 2006 (n = 666). The DT is a single item, 11-point scale to rate level of distress. The associated PL identifies the cause of distress. Results The DT and PL were used on 90% of eligible callers, most providing valid responses. Benefits included having an objective, structured and consistent means for distress screening and triage to supportive care services. Reported challenges included apparent inappropriateness of the tools due to the nature of the call or level of caller distress, the DT numeric scale, and the level of operator training. Conclusions We observed positive outcomes to using the DT and PL, although operators reported some challenges. Overcoming these challenges may improve distress screening particularly by less experienced clinicians, and further development of the PL items and DT scale may assist with administration. The DT and PL allow clinicians to direct/prioritise interventions or referrals, although ongoing training and support is critical in distress screening
Radiogenic and Muon-Induced Backgrounds in the LUX Dark Matter Detector
The Large Underground Xenon (LUX) dark matter experiment aims to detect rare
low-energy interactions from Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). The
radiogenic backgrounds in the LUX detector have been measured and compared with
Monte Carlo simulation. Measurements of LUX high-energy data have provided
direct constraints on all background sources contributing to the background
model. The expected background rate from the background model for the 85.3 day
WIMP search run is
~events~keV~kg~day
in a 118~kg fiducial volume. The observed background rate is
~events~keV~kg~day,
consistent with model projections. The expectation for the radiogenic
