    Obsessive and harmonious passion in physically active Spanish and Hungarian men and women: a brief report on cultural and gender differences

    Increased research on passion in physical activity calls for direct examination of possible mediating variables that could influence the research outcome. The present study using a two by-two (nation by gender) between-participants design, examined whether gender and/or cultural differences in obsessive- and harmonious passion were present in Spanish and Hungarian physically active individuals. Participants (n=1,002) completed the Passion Scale, reported their gender, age, and weekly hours of physical activity. Multivariate analysis of covariance revealed that the experiencing of physical activity-related obsessive- and harmonious passion differed between the two countries and Hungarian women scored significantly higher on harmonious and obsessive passion than Spanish women. However, Hungarian men only scored significantly higher on obsessive passion, but not harmonious passion compared to Spanish men. These results suggest that the moderating role of gender and cultural differences should be addressed more carefully in conducting and interpreting results of research concerned with passion in physical activity

    The effects of classical swine fever (CSF) virus infection on the porcine leukocyte subsets were investigated by flow cytometry in acute, chronic and convalescent forms of the disease. The virus antigen could be first detected in the monocytes on postinfection (p.i.) day 10 while in the lymphocytes on p.i. day 13. It could be established that the ratio of CD6+ cells decreased until p.i. day 6, but afterwards it started to increase and reached different values. The CD4+CD8+, the CD8+ and the CD6- cells were obviously higher virus positive than the CD4+ and the CD4-CD8-subsets, but essentially all subsets could be infected. The ratio of CD8+ cells increased during the disease, while the number of double positive cells decreased, and that of the CD4+ cells was variable. The viral antigen could be detected in a lower percentage of the CD4+CD8+, CD8+, CD6+ and CD6- cells of the pigs affected with the chronic form of the disease than in those with the acute form. During the experiments no viral antigen could be detected in the leukocytes of the pig that became convalescent, though the changes in its leukocyte subsets were very similar to those seen in pigs in which the viral antigen could be detected. The studies have revealed that essentially all leukocyte subsets can be infected with the CSF virus, but in very different amounts

    PCI Based Read-out Receiver Card in the ALICE DAQ System

    The Detector Data Link (DDL) is the high-speed optical link for the ALICE experiment. This link shall transfer the data coming from the detectors at 100 MB/s rate. The main components of the link have been developed: the destination Interface Unit (DIU), the Source Interface Unit (SIU) and the Read-out Receiver Card (RORC). The first RORC version is based on the VME bus. The performance tests show that the maximum VME bandwidth could be reached. Meanwhile the PCI bus became very popular and is used in many platforms. The development of a PCI-based version has been started. The document describes the prototype version in three sections. An overview explains the main purpose of the card: to provide an interface between the DDL and the PCI bus. Acting as a 32bit/33MHz PCI master the card is able to write or read directly to or from the system memory from or to the DDL, respectively. Beside these functions the card can also be used as an autonomous data generator. The card has been designed to be well adapted to applications, which require small software overhead such the high-speed data acquisition systems. The implementation of the firmware will be presented. For the logic design we are using VHDL and schematic draw. Software library routines were written in C and are available on Linux OS. The results of performance measurements will be available to allow the comparison between the VME-RORC and PCI-RORC. In the conclusion the future plans and the idea of the improved (64bit/66MHz) PCI-RORC will be shown

    Evolution of coronal jets during Solar Cycle 24

    The focus of this study is on the spatial and temporal distributions of 2704 solar jets throughout Solar Cycle 24, from beginning to end. This work is a follow-up paper by Liu et al. With this extended data set, we have further confirmed the two distinct distributions of coronal jets: one located in polar regions and another at lower latitudes. Further analysis of the series of coronal jets revealed kink oscillations of the global solar magnetic field. Additionally, studying the northern and southern hemispheres separately showed an antiphase correlation that can be interpreted as a global sausage oscillatory pattern of the loci of the coronal jets. We also investigated how the variability of the solar cycle may impact the power law index of coronal jets by dividing the data set into the rising and declining phases of Solar Cycle 24. However, there is no compelling evidence to suggest that the power law index changes after the maximum. It is worth noting that based on this vast database of solar jets, the degradation of the 304 Å channel of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly instrument on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory can also be identified and confirmed. Finally, we searched for compelling signatures of the presence of active longitude in the coronal jet database. There was no obvious evidence with a high probability of an active longitude; therefore, this question remains yet to be addressed further

    Pathogenicity of a bovine viral diarrhoea virus strain in pregnant sows: Short communication

    The biological properties of bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) strain Oregon C24V were studied after intranasal and subcutaneous infection of pregnant sows. This virus strain is widely used in Hungary for immunising cattle against bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD). Based upon the results of the clinical, gross pathological, histopathological and virological examinations it can be established that the given strain caused asymptomatic infection and serological conversion in sows that were in the second third of gestation. The virus caused clinically apparent disease in some of the piglets born at term, which indicates that it had crossed the placenta. More than half (57%) of the live-born piglets died within 60 days of birth. The sows and their progeny did not shed the virus. BVDV infection has great differential diagnostic importance in pigs, as classical swine fever (CSF) virus strains of reduced virulence cause similar clinical symptoms and gross and histopathological changes
