Relative and Absolute Mappings for Rotating Remote 3D Objects on Multi-Touch Tabletops
The use of human fingers as an object selection and manipulation tool has raised significant challenges when interacting with direct-touch tabletop displays. This is particularly an issue when manipulating remote objects in 3D environments as finger presses can obscure objects at a distance that are rendered very small. Techniques to support remote manipulation either provide absolute mappings between finger presses and object transformation or rely on tools that support relative mappings t o selected objects. This paper explores techniques to manipulate remote 3D objects on direct-touch tabletops using absolute and relative mapping modes. A user study was conducted to compare absolute and relative mappings in support of a rotation task. Overall results did not show a statistically significant difference between these two mapping modes on both task completion time and the number of touches. However, the absolute mapping mode was found to be less efficient than the relative mapping mode when rotating a small object. Also participants preferred relative mapping for small objects. Four mapping techniques were then compared for perceived ease of use and learnability. Touchpad, voodoo doll and telescope techniques were found to be comparable for manipulating remote objects in a 3D scene. A flying camera technique was considered too complex and required increased effort by participants. Burning questions: Investigations using field experimentation of different patterns of change to bone in accidental vs deliberate burning scenarios.
Experimental research into thermal alterations to bone has tended to be carried out under laboratory conditions, where different burning scenarios are simulated to reconstruct the respective heat-induced changes in bone. While this approach has greatly advanced this field of research, very little open-air field experimentation has been conducted and consequently documented. The current paper presents the results of the first study to utilise field experimentation to examine the heat-induced alterations that occur in bone when subjected to two different firing conditions. This experiment contrasted a reconstruction of a funeral pyre with a simulated house fire in order to explore differences in the effects of accidental and deliberate burning scenarios on bone. Both advantages and problems faced are discussed with regards to the methodological approach used to document and analyse the resultant burned bone; leading to recommendations for future research. The burned bone assemblage from the accidental fire displayed uneven burning, with an extensive spectrum of colour alteration. Bone fragments recovered from the funeral pyre however showed distinctly uniform thermal changes, with minimal variation. This research demonstrates the value of field experimentation in the analysis of burned bone from both archaeological and forensic contexts. Insight into both ancient and modern households and their subjectivity to domestic fires, as well as the social and ritual implications of past cremation funerals are considered. It is concluded that future research would greatly benefit from employing a similar mode of investigation, in conjunction with laboratory experimentation
Evaluating ex situ rates of carbon dioxide flux from northern Borneo peat swamp soils
This study quantified CO2 emissions from tropical peat swamp soils in Brunei Darussalam. At each site, soil was collected from areas of intact and degraded peat and CO2 flux, and total organic content were measured ex situ. Soil organic content (20-99%) was not significantly different between intact and degraded forest samples. CO2 flux was higher for intact forest samples than degraded forest samples (1.0 vs. 0.6molCO2m-2s-1, respectively) but did not differ among forest locations. From our laboratory experiments, we estimated a potential emissions of 10-20tCO2ha-1y-1 which is in the lower range of values reported for other tropical peat swamps. However, our results are likely affected by unmeasured variation in root respiration and the lability of resident carbon. Overall, these findings provide experimental evidence to support that clearance of tropical peat swamp forests can increase CO2 emissions due to faster rates of decomposition
The pi -> pi pi process in nuclei and the restoration of chiral symmetry
The results of an extensive campaign of measurements of the pi -> pi pi
process in the nucleon and nuclei at intermediate energies are presented. The
measurements were motivated by the study of strong pi pi correlations in
nuclei. The analysis relies on the composite ratio C_{pi pi}^A, which accounts
for the clear effect of the nuclear medium on the (pi pi) system. The
comparison of the C_{pi pi}^A distributions for the (pi pi)_{I=J=0} and (pi
pi)_{I=0,J=2} systems to the model predictions indicates that the C_{pi pi}^A
behavior in proximity of the 2m_pi threshold is explainable through the partial
restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclei.Comment: accepted for publication in Nucl. Phys.

Efficacy of increased resistant starch consumption in human type 2 diabetes
Resistant starch (RS) has been shown to beneficially affect insulin sensitivity in healthy individuals and those with metabolic syndrome, but its effects on human type 2 diabetes (T2DM) are unknown. This study aimed to determine the effects of increased RS consumption on insulin sensitivity and glucose control and changes in postprandial metabolites and body fat in T2DM. Seventeen individuals with well-controlled T2DM (HbA1c 46.6±2 mmol/mol) consumed, in a random order, either 40 g of type 2 RS (HAM-RS2) or a placebo, daily for 12 weeks with a 12-week washout period in between. At the end of each intervention period, participants attended for three metabolic investigations: a two-step euglycemic–hyperinsulinemic clamp combined with an infusion of [6,6-2H2] glucose, a meal tolerance test (MTT) with arterio-venous sampling across the forearm, and whole-body imaging. HAM-RS2 resulted in significantly lower postprandial glucose concentrations (P=0.045) and a trend for greater glucose uptake across the forearm muscle (P=0.077); however, there was no effect of HAM-RS2 on hepatic or peripheral insulin sensitivity, or on HbA1c. Fasting non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations were significantly lower (P=0.004) and NEFA suppression was greater during the clamp with HAM-RS2 (P=0.001). Fasting triglyceride (TG) concentrations and soleus intramuscular TG concentrations were significantly higher following the consumption of HAM-RS2 (P=0.039 and P=0.027 respectively). Although fasting GLP1 concentrations were significantly lower following HAM-RS2 consumption (P=0.049), postprandial GLP1 excursions during the MTT were significantly greater (P=0.009). HAM-RS2 did not improve tissue insulin sensitivity in well-controlled T2DM, but demonstrated beneficial effects on meal handling, possibly due to higher postprandial GLP1
Magnetic-field dependence of electron spin relaxation in n-type semiconductors
We present a theoretical investigation of the magnetic field dependence of
the longitudinal () and transverse () spin relaxation times of
conduction band electrons in n-type III-V semiconductors. In particular, we
find that the interplay between the Dyakonov-Perel process and an additional
spin relaxation channel, which originates from the electron wave vector
dependence of the electron -factor, yields a maximal at a finite
magnetic field. We compare our results with existing experimental data on
n-type GaAs and make specific additional predictions for the magnetic field

General properties of the pion production reaction in nuclear matter
The pion production reaction on was
studied at incident pion energies of = 240, 260, 280, 300, and
320 MeV. The experiment was performed using the pion-channel at TRIUMF,
and multiparticle events, () and
(), were detected with the CHAOS spectrometer. Results
are reported in the form of both differential and total cross sections, and are
compared to theoretical predictions and the reaction phase space. The present
investigation of the T-dependence of the
reaction complements earlier examinations of the A-dependence of the reaction,
which was measured using , , , , , and
targets at 280 MeV. Some general properties of the
pion-induced pion production reaction in nuclear matter will be presented,
