    Practical Open-Loop Optimistic Planning

    We consider the problem of online planning in a Markov Decision Process when given only access to a generative model, restricted to open-loop policies - i.e. sequences of actions - and under budget constraint. In this setting, the Open-Loop Optimistic Planning (OLOP) algorithm enjoys good theoretical guarantees but is overly conservative in practice, as we show in numerical experiments. We propose a modified version of the algorithm with tighter upper-confidence bounds, KLOLOP, that leads to better practical performances while retaining the sample complexity bound. Finally, we propose an efficient implementation that significantly improves the time complexity of both algorithms

    An overview of the Software Development and Verification System (SWDVS) for the space shuttle is presented. The design considerations, goals, assumptions, and major features of the design are examined. A scenario that shows three persons involved in flight software development using the SWDVS in response to a program change request is developed. The SWDVS is described from the standpoint of different groups of people with different responsibilities in the shuttle program to show the functional requirements that influenced the SWDVS design. The software elements of the SWDVS that satisfy the requirements of the different groups are identified

    We report on the immersion of a spin-qubit encoded in a single trapped ion into a spin-polarized neutral atom environment, which possesses both continuous (motional) and discrete (spin) degrees of freedom. The environment offers the possibility of a precise microscopic description, which allows us to understand dynamics and decoherence from first principles. We observe the spin dynamics of the qubit and measure the decoherence times (T1 and T2), which are determined by the spin-exchange interaction as well as by an unexpectedly strong spin-nonconserving coupling mechanism

    Load, Deformation and Strength Behavior of Soils under Dynamic Loadings

    The state of the art is summarized for the evaluation of the stress, strain and strength properties of soils in terms of appropriate test equipment, test procedures and the presentation of test results in both the laboratory and the field. Different testing requirements for measuring soil properties for l) design and analysis problems and 2) for constitutive property modeling are compared and recommendations on minimum test result reporting requirements are given. In addition, methods for overcoming equipment and test procedure limitations are presented. The importance of combining field and laboratory test results is stressed and ways to make more extensive use of geophysical test measurements to obtain insitu soil properties are summarized. On a site specific basis, it appears that geophysical test results may correlate well with many soil index properties and measures of insitu soil dynamic properties. Thus, much useful site information may be obtained by combining a limited geophysical test program and a more extensive traditional site investigation program

    Semantic modelling of user interests based on cross-folksonomy analysis

    The continued increase in Web usage, in particular participation in folksonomies, reveals a trend towards a more dynamic and interactive Web where individuals can organise and share resources. Tagging has emerged as the de-facto standard for the organisation of such resources, providing a versatile and reactive knowledge management mechanism that users find easy to use and understand. It is common nowadays for users to have multiple profiles in various folksonomies, thus distributing their tagging activities. In this paper, we present a method for the automatic consolidation of user profiles across two popular social networking sites, and subsequent semantic modelling of their interests utilising Wikipedia as a multi-domain model. We evaluate how much can be learned from such sites, and in which domains the knowledge acquired is focussed.
