Deterministic Quantum Key Distribution Using Gaussian-Modulated Squeezed States
A continuous variable ping-pong scheme, which is utilized to generate
deterministically private key, is proposed. The proposed scheme is implemented
physically by using Gaussian-modulated squeezed states. The deterministic way,
i.e., no basis reconciliation between two parties, leads a two-times efficiency
comparing to the standard quantum key distribution schemes. Especially, the
separate control mode does not need in the proposed scheme so that it is
simpler and more available than previous ping-pong schemes. The attacker may be
detected easily through the fidelity of the transmitted signal, and may not be
successful in the beam splitter attack strategy.Comment: 7 pages, 4figure
On the Evolution of (Hateful) Memes by Means of Multimodal Contrastive Learning
The dissemination of hateful memes online has adverse effects on social media
platforms and the real world. Detecting hateful memes is challenging, one of
the reasons being the evolutionary nature of memes; new hateful memes can
emerge by fusing hateful connotations with other cultural ideas or symbols. In
this paper, we propose a framework that leverages multimodal contrastive
learning models, in particular OpenAI's CLIP, to identify targets of hateful
content and systematically investigate the evolution of hateful memes. We find
that semantic regularities exist in CLIP-generated embeddings that describe
semantic relationships within the same modality (images) or across modalities
(images and text). Leveraging this property, we study how hateful memes are
created by combining visual elements from multiple images or fusing textual
information with a hateful image. We demonstrate the capabilities of our
framework for analyzing the evolution of hateful memes by focusing on
antisemitic memes, particularly the Happy Merchant meme. Using our framework on
a dataset extracted from 4chan, we find 3.3K variants of the Happy Merchant
meme, with some linked to specific countries, persons, or organizations. We
envision that our framework can be used to aid human moderators by flagging new
variants of hateful memes so that moderators can manually verify them and
mitigate the problem of hateful content online.Comment: To Appear in the 44th IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy, May

The effectiveness of quantum operations for eavesdropping on sealed messages
A quantum protocol is described which enables a user to send sealed messages
and that allows for the detection of active eavesdroppers. We examine a class
of eavesdropping strategies, those that make use of quantum operations, and we
determine the information gain versus disturbance caused by these strategies.
We demonstrate this tradeoff with an example and we compare this protocol to
quantum key distribution, quantum direct communication, and quantum seal
protocols.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures. Third Feynman Festival, 25 -- 29 August 2006,

Lattice dielectric response of CdCu{3}Ti{4}O{12} and of CaCu{3}Ti{4}O{12} from first principles
Structural, vibrational, and lattice dielectric properties of
CdCu{3}Ti{4}O{12} are studied using density-functional theory within the local
spin-density approximation, and the results are compared with those computed
previously for CaCu{3}Ti{4}O{12}. Replacing Ca with Cd is found to leave many
calculated quantities largely unaltered, although significant differences do
emerge in zone-center optical phonon frequencies and mode effective charges.
The computed phonon frequencies of CdCu{3}Ti{4}O{12} are found to be in
excellent agreement with experiment, and the computed lattice contribution to
the intrinsic static dielectric constant (~60) also agrees exceptionally well
with a recent optical absorption experiment. These results provide further
support for a picture in which the lattice dielectric response is essentially
conventional, suggesting an extrinsic origin for the anomalous low-frequency
dielectric response recently observed in both materials.Comment: 5 pages; uses REVTEX macros. Also available at

Entropy Projection Curved Gabor with Random Forest and SVM for Face Recognition
In this work, we propose a workflow for face recognition under occlusion using the entropy projection from the curved Gabor filter, and create a representative and compact features vector that describes a face. Despite the reduced vector obtained by the entropy projection, it still presents opportunity for further dimensionality reduction. Therefore, we use a Random Forest classifier as an attribute selector, providing a 97% reduction of the original vector while keeping suitable accuracy. A set of experiments using three public image databases: AR Face, Extended Yale B with occlusion and FERET illustrates the proposed methodology, evaluated using the SVM classifier. The results obtained in the experiments show promising results when compared to the available approaches in the literature, obtaining 98.05% accuracy for the complete AR Face, 97.26% for FERET and 81.66% with Yale with 50% occlusion
Semaphorin 3A Contributes to Distal Pulmonary Epithelial Cell Differentiation and Lung Morphogenesis
altered distal lung structure.) littermate controls. mice that survived the immediate perinatal period. Furthermore, Sema3A deletion was linked with enhanced postnatal alveolar septal cell death. These data suggest that Sema3A modulates distal pulmonary epithelial cell development and alveolar septation. Defining how Sema3A influences structural plasticity of the developing lung is a critical first step for determining if this pathway can be exploited to develop innovative strategies for repair after acute or chronic lung injury

Fault Diagnosis for Micro-Gas Turbine Engine Sensors via Wavelet Entropy
Sensor fault diagnosis is necessary to ensure the normal operation of a gas turbine system. However, the existing methods require too many resources and this need can’t be satisfied in some occasions. Since the sensor readings are directly affected by sensor state, sensor fault diagnosis can be performed by extracting features of the measured signals. This paper proposes a novel fault diagnosis method for sensors based on wavelet entropy. Based on the wavelet theory, wavelet decomposition is utilized to decompose the signal in different scales. Then the instantaneous wavelet energy entropy (IWEE) and instantaneous wavelet singular entropy (IWSE) are defined based on the previous wavelet entropy theory. Subsequently, a fault diagnosis method for gas turbine sensors is proposed based on the results of a numerically simulated example. Then, experiments on this method are carried out on a real micro gas turbine engine. In the experiment, four types of faults with different magnitudes are presented. The experimental results show that the proposed method for sensor fault diagnosis is efficient

Low Cost, Robust, Environmentally Friendly Geopolymer–Mesoporous Carbon Composites for Efficient Solar Powered Steam Generation
High-efficiency, environment friendly, renewable energy-based methods of desalination represent attractive and potentially very powerful solutions to the long-standing problem of global water shortage. Many new laboratory-scale materials have been developed for photothermal desalination but the development of low-cost, easy-to-manufacture, and scalable materials and systems that can convert solar irradiation into exploitable thermal energy in this context is still a significant challenge. This paper presents work on a geopolymer–biomass mesoporous carbon composite (GBMCC) device with mesoporous and macroporous structures for harvesting solar energy, which is then used in a device to generate water vapor with high efficiency using negative pressure, wind-driven, steam generation. The GBMCC device gives water evaporation rates of 1.58 and 2.71 kg m−2 h−1 under 1 and 3 suns illumination, with the solar thermal conversion efficiency up to 84.95% and 67.6%, respectively. A remarkable, record high water vapor generation rate of 7.55 kg m−2 h−1 is achieved under 1 sun solar intensity at the wind speed of 3 m s−1. This is a key step forward todays efficient, sustainable and economical production of clean water from seawater or common wastewater with free solar energy
Effect of MWCNT Filler on Properties and Flux of Chitosan/ PEG based Nanocomposites Membranes
Biopolymer are expected to be environmentally compatible and to have great potential application as membranes material. The chitosan-poly (ethylene glycol)/PEG based composite membranes was successfully synthesized via inversed phase method. The effect of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) as nanofiller on properties and performances of composite membranes were intensively evaluated. The membrane was prepared by mixing of chitosan and PEG solutions at the same composition ratio while MWCNT amount in the mixture was varied. The synthesized membrane was characterized by means of FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle, and tensile strength measurement. The performance of composite membrane on filtration was evaluated in term of flux (permeability) and rejection (rejection) tests. The results showed that the optimum volume ratio of composite membrane solution was found at 30:10:7.5 for chitosan/ PEG/ MWCNT, respectively, as indicated by the largest flux. Insertion of MWCNT nanofiller notably enhanced hydrophilicity, porosity, and mechanical properties of composites membranes that are confirmed by contact angle, SEM images and elongation forces value, respectively. The MWCNT nanofiller remarkably increased both of flux and rejection of composite membranes up to 60 Lm2h-1 and 96%, respectively. The remarkable enhancement of composite membrane performance is attributed to the effective interaction of MWCNT with polymeric matrix
