    Late Quaternary evolution of gravel deposits in Tromper Wiek, South-western Baltic Sea

    The Late Quaternary history of the Baltic Sea is marked by a complex sequence of glacial, lacustrine and marine phases (late Pleistocene, Baltic Ice Lake, Yoldia Lake, Ancylus Lake, Littorina Sea). Boomer data, acquired in October 2004, permitted to improve the knowledge of the late Quaternary geological evolution of Tromper Wiek, a semienclosed bay, located in the north-eastern part of Rügen Island. The sedimentary deposits can be subdivided in 6 seismic units (U1 to U6). The upper part of the lowest unit (U1) corresponds to Pleistocene till. Channels incise the top of this till (surface S2), probably created during the first drainage of the Baltic Sea during the Late Glacial. Subsequent channel filling (U2) occurred in two phases beginning with chaotic deposits, probably fluviatile of origin, followed by graded deposits. This filling was stopped by an erosive period with the formation of surface S3, showing channels at the same location as S2. The facies of the channel filling (U3 and U4), during a second phase, is similar to the first one, but resembles a prograding sediment body, intercalated between the two units in the shallower part. U3 shows a bar-shaped deposit at its top. The facies of U4 is very similar to a barrier/back-barrier facies similar to the facies of unit U5, partly composed of gravel. The deposits of U6 correspond to the post-Littorina Sea deposits. The presence of gravel is linked to coastal cliffs, in which chalk layers, pushed up by glaciers, alternate with sections of till and meltwater deposits and with submarine outcrops of till. Gravel deposits are present in unit U5. They are strongly linked to the presence of a barrier. Four of the six units show a barrier facies (U2, U3, U4 and U5); gravel deposits could be present inside all of these units and would represent a larger deposit than estimated previously

    Soliton trains in Bose-Fermi mixtures

    We theoretically consider the formation of bright solitons in a mixture of Bose and Fermi degenerate gases. While we assume the forces between atoms in a pure Bose component to be effectively repulsive, their character can be changed from repulsive to attractive in the presence of fermions provided the Bose and Fermi gases attract each other strongly enough. In such a regime the Bose component becomes a gas of effectively attractive atoms. Hence, generating bright solitons in the bosonic gas is possible. Indeed, after a sudden increase of the strength of attraction between bosons and fermions (realized by using a Feshbach resonance technique or by firm radial squeezing of both samples) soliton trains appear in the Bose-Fermi mixture.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Measuring transient reaction rates from nonstationary catalysts

    Up to now, methods for measuring rates of reactions on catalysts required long measurement times involving signal averaging over many experiments. This imposed a requirement that the catalyst return to its original state at the end of each experiment—a complete reversibility requirement. For real catalysts, fulfilling the reversibility requirement is often impossible—catalysts under reaction conditions may change their chemical composition and structure as they become activated or while they are being poisoned through use. It is therefore desirable to develop high-speed methods where transient rates can be quickly measured while catalysts are changing. In this work, we present velocity-resolved kinetics using high-repetition-rate pulsed laser ionization and high-speed ion imaging detection. The reaction is initiated by a single molecular beam pulse incident at the surface, and the product formation rate is observed by a sequence of pulses produced by a high-repetition-rate laser. Ion imaging provides the desorbing product flux (reaction rate) as a function of reaction time for each laser pulse. We demonstrate the principle of this approach by rate measurements on two simple reactions: CO desorption from and CO oxidation on the 332 facet of Pd. This approach overcomes the time-consuming scanning of the delay between CO and laser pulses needed in past experiments and delivers a data acquisition rate that is 10–1000 times higher. We are able to record kinetic traces of CO2 formation while a CO beam titrates oxygen atoms from an O-saturated surface. This approach also allows measurements of reaction rates under diffusion-controlled conditions

    The root of the East African cichlid radiations

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>For decades cichlid fishes (Perciformes: Cichlidae) of the East African cichlid radiations (Teleostei: Cichlidae) have served as natural experimental subjects for the study of speciation processes and the search for potential speciation key factors. Despite numerous phylogenetic studies dealing with their intragroup relationships, surprisingly little is known about the phylogenetic placement and time of origin of this enigmatic group. We used multilocus DNA-sequence data from five nuclear and four mitochondrial genes and refined divergence time estimates to fill this knowledge gap.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In concordance with previous studies, the root of the East African cichlid radiations is nested within the so called "Tilapias", which is a paraphyletic assemblage. For the first time, we clarified tilapiine intragroup relationships and established three new monophyletic groups:"Oreochromini", "Boreotilapiini" and a group with a distribution center in East/Central Africa, the "Austrotilapiini". The latter is the founder lineage of the East African radiations and emerged at the Miocene/Oligocene boundary at about 14 to 26 mya.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results provide the first resolved hypothesis for the phylogenetic placement of the megadiverse East African cichlid radiations as well as for the world's second most important aquaculture species, the Nile Tilapia, <it>Oreochromis niloticus</it>. Our analyses constitute not only a robust basis for African cichlid phylogenetics and systematics, but provide a valid and necessary framework for upcoming comparative phylogenomic studies in evolutionary biology and aquaculture.</p

    Effects of steam and vacuum administration during decontamination on essential oil content in herbal medicines

    Saturated steam decontamination is an application for elimination of microorganisms from the surface of different materials. This technique has been optimized for the treatment of dried spices or pharmaceuticals, which could have been contaminated with microorganisms during cultivation, processing, storage or transport. The described saturated steam decontamination is based on the Lemgo process. This method does not kill microorganisms, but removes them physically from the surface.Our investigation focused on measuring the effects of steam temperatures at 120 °C and 100 °C, respectively, for 20 s with a subsequent fl ash vacuum of 20 s. Applications of fl ash vacuum as well as saturated steam heated to 120 °C were also tested separately. The impact of these parameters on the essential oil content and on the surface of different medicinal plants such as marjoram, oregano, fennel and eucalyptus was analysed using gas chromatography and scanning electron microscopy.Especially in herbal drugs with glandular trichomes such as marjoram and oregano severe surface destruction was visible accompanied by high losses of essential oil from 93 % in marjoram tissue to 59 % in oregano tissue. For fennel and eucalyptus that possess protected essential oil storage cells only minor or no reduction of volatiles has been observed during exposure to saturated steam. The experiments show clearly a positive correlation between stability of essential oil cavities and essential oil content preservation

    In a full factorial design (4 diets X challenge, Yes/No), 72 weaning pigs were assigned to one of the diets: Control; experimental diets, obtained with the addition of 2 g/kg free sodium butyrate (fNaB), or 0.6 g/kg fat-protected sodium butyrate (pNaB), or 2 g/kg INVE-NutriAd commercial mixture (Mix, based on 75 g/kg protected butyrate). Oral challenge with Escherichia coli K88 was done on 2/3 of pigs on d 7. Pigs were slaughtered on d 13. The mortality in challenged pigs, tended to be higher in control group (50.0 %) than in the three supplemented groups (23.5%). Growth tended to be increased averagely by the supplements (P = 0.100) after the challenge, that also significantly reduced growth. In general the diet did not affect the fecal shedding of Escherichia coli and Lactobacilli, the K88-specific IgA activity in blood, the morphology of oxyntic mucosa and the expression of H+/K+-ATPase gene. The supplementations tended to increase villous length of jejunum (P = 0.101). On the whole, growth, villous height and surviving rate can be positively affected either when the supplementation is done by free butyrate, by protected butyrate or by the special Inve Nutri-Ad product and these effects are distributed both on pigs infected or not with Escherichia coli K88

    Effect of the use of organic acids in drinking water during the last two weeks prior to slaughter on salmonella shedding

    In this study we investigated the effect of adding organic acids to the drinking water of finishing pigs two weeks prior to slaughter on the shedding and prevalence rate of Salmonella at slaughter. One hundred animals from 4 Belgian pig herds infected with Salmonella were included. Fifty of these ammals received drinking water supplemented with a mixture of different organic acids during 14 days prior to slaughter. Non-treated animals served as controls. Different samples were taken: contents of ileum and rectum, mesenteric lymph nodes and carcass swabs. All samples were submitted to Salmonella isolation using standard procedures. The results could not reveal a significant difference between both groups. This may be due to the limited power of the study (only 50 animals sampled in each group) or due to the fact that the treatment duration was insufficient to prove the benefit of the used organic acids

    Differential gene expression mediated by 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Given the immuno-modulatory activity of native haemozoin (Hz), the effects of constitutive Hz components on immune response are of interest. Recently, gene expression changes mediated by HNE and the synthetic analogue of Hz, beta-haematin (BH), were identified and implicated a significant role for lipid peroxidation products in Hz's activity. The study presented herein examines gene expression changes in response to 15(S)-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (HETE) in a model macrophage cell line.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophage-like cells were treated with 40 μM 15(S)-HETE for 24 h, and microarray analysis was used to identify global gene expression alterations. Fold changes were calculated relative to LPS-stimulated cells and those genes altered at least 1.8-fold (<it>p </it>value ≤ 0.025) were considered to be differentially expressed. Expression levels of a subset of genes were assessed by qRT-PCR and used to confirm the microarray results.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Network analysis revealed that altered genes were primarily associated with "lipid metabolism" and "small molecule biochemistry". While several genes associated with PPAR-gamma receptor-mediated signaling were differentially expressed, a number of genes indicated the activation of secondary signaling cascades. Genes related to cytoadherence (cell-cell and cell-matrix), leukocyte extravasation, and inflammatory response were also differentially regulated by treatment, supporting a potential role for 15(S)-HETE in malaria pathogenesis.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results add insight and detail to 15-HETE's effects on gene expression in macrophage-like cells. Data indicate that while 15-HETE exerts biological activity and may participate in Hz-mediated immuno-modulation, the gene expression changes are modest relative to those altered by the lipid peroxidation product HNE.</p
