    On the phase structure and thermodynamics of QCD

    We discuss the phase structure and thermodynamics of QCD by means of dynamical chiral effective models. Quark and meson fluctuations are included via the functional renormalization group. We study the influence of confinement in addition to the impact of fluctuations by comparing the results of the chiral models to their Polyakov-loop extended versions. Furthermore, we discuss the mass sensitivity of the phase structure and thermodynamics and find interesting modifications close to the chiral limit.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures; Appendix added; published versio

    A search for millimetric emission from Gamma Ray Bursts

    We have used the 2- year Differential Microwave Radiometer data from the COsmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite to systematically search for millimetric (31 - 90 GHz) emission from the Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) in the Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) GRB 3B catalog. The large beamsize of the COBE instrument (7 degs FWHM) allows for an efficient search of the large GRB positional error boxes, although it also means that fluxes from (point source) GRB objects will be somewhat diluted. A likelihood analysis has been used to look for a change in the level of millimetric emission from the locations of 81 GRB events during the first two years (1990 & 1991) of the COBE mission. The likelihood analysis determined that we did not find any significant millimetric signal before or after the occurance of the GRB. We find 95% confidence level upper limits of 175, 192 and 645 Jy or, in terms of fluxes, of 9.6, 16.3 and 54.8 10^{-13} erg/cm^2/s, respectively at 31, 53 and 90 GHz. We also look separately at different classes of GRBs, including a study of the top ten (in peak flux) GRBs, the "short burst" and "long burst" subsets, finding similar upper limits. While these limits may be somewhat higher than one would like, we estimate that using this technique with future planned missions could push these limits down to \sim 1 mJy.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, to be published in The Astrophysical Journa

    Vacuum fluctuations and the thermodynamics of chiral models

    We consider the thermodynamics of chiral models in the mean-field approximation and discuss the relevance of the (frequently omitted) fermion vacuum loop. Within the chiral quark-meson model and its Polyakov loop extended version, we show that the fermion vacuum fluctuations can change the order of the phase transition in the chiral limit and strongly influence physical observables. We compute the temperature-dependent effective potential and baryon number susceptibilities in these models, with and without the vacuum term, and explore the cutoff and the pion mass dependence of the susceptibilities. Finally, in the renormalized model the divergent vacuum contribution is removed using the dimensional regularization.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

    Near-infrared studies of the 2010 outburst of the recurrent nova U Scorpii

    We present near-infrared (near-IR) observations of the 2010 outburst of U Sco. JHK photometry is presented on 10 consecutive days starting from 0.59 d after outburst. Such photometry can gainfully be integrated into a larger data base of other multiwavelength data which aim to comprehensively study the evolution of U Sco. Early near-IR spectra, starting from 0.56 d after outburst, are presented and their general characteristics discussed. Early in the eruption, we see very broad wings in several spectral lines, with tails extending up to ∼10 000 km s−1 along the line of sight; it is unexpected to have a nova with ejection velocities equal to those usually thought to be exclusive to supernovae. From recombination analysis, we estimate an upper limit of [inline image] for the ejected mass

    We put forward a Polyakov-loop extended quark meson model, where matter as well as glue fluctuations are taken into account, cf. [1]. The latter are included via a Polyakov-loop potential. Usually such a glue potential is based on Yang-Mills lattice data only. We show that a parametrisation of unquenching effects as proposed in [2], together with the inclusion of fluctuations via the functional renormalisation group [3,4], accounts for the relevant dynamics.     The three-flavor chiral phase structure in hot and dense QCD matter

    Chiral symmetry restoration at nonzero temperature and quark densities are investigated in the framework of a linear sigma model with N_f=3 light quark flavors. After the derivation of the grand potential in mean-field approximation, the nonstrange and strange condensates, the in-medium masses of the scalar and pseudoscalar nonets are analyzed in hot and dense medium. The influence of the axial anomaly on the nonet masses and the isoscalar mixings on the pseudoscalar \eta-\eta' and scalar \sigma(600)-f_0(1370) complex are examined. The sensitivity of the chiral phase transition as well as the existence and location of a critical end point in the phase diagram on the value of the sigma mass is explored. The chiral critical surface with and without the influence of the axial U(1)_A anomaly is elaborated as a function of the pion and kaon masses for several values of the sigma mass.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables, RevTex4; revised version, accepted for publication in PR

    Quantification of Plasma and Urine Thymidine and 2'-Deoxyuridine by LC-MS/MS for the Pharmacodynamic Evaluation of Erythrocyte Encapsulated Thymidine Phosphorylase in Patients with Mitochondrial Neurogastrointestinal Encephalomyopathy.

    Mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy (MNGIE) is an ultra-rare disorder caused by mutations in TYMP, leading to a deficiency in thymidine phosphorylase and a subsequent systemic accumulation of thymidine and 2'-deoxyuridine. Erythrocyte-encapsulated thymidine phosphorylase (EE-TP) is under clinical development as an enzyme replacement therapy for MNGIE. Bioanalytical methods were developed according to regulatory guidelines for the quantification of thymidine and 2'-deoxyuridine in plasma and urine using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for supporting the pharmacodynamic evaluation of EE-TP. Samples were deproteinized with 5% perchloric acid (v/v) and the supernatants analyzed using a Hypercarb column (30 × 2.1 mm, 3 µm), with mobile phases of 0.1% formic acid in methanol and 0.1% formic acid in deionized water. Detection was conducted using an ion-spray interface running in positive mode. Isotopically labelled thymidine and 2'-deoxyuridine were used as internal standards. Calibration curves for both metabolites showed linearity (r > 0.99) in the concentration ranges of 10-10,000 ng/mL for plasma, and 1-50 µg/mL for urine, with method analytical performances within the acceptable criteria for quality control samples. The plasma method was successfully applied to the diagnosis of two patients with MNGIE and the quantification of plasma metabolites in three patients treated with EE-TP

    Individual Values and SME Environmental Engagement

    We study the values on which managers of small and medium-sized enterprises draw when constructing their personal and organizational-level engagement with environmental issues, particularly climate change. Values play an important mediating role in business environmental engagement but relatively little research has been conducted on individual values in smaller organizations. Using the Schwartz Value System (SVS) as a framework for a qualitative analysis, we identify four ‘ideal-types’ of SME managers and provide rich descriptions of the ways in which values shape their constructions of environmental engagement. In contrast to previous research, which is framed around a binary divide between self-enhancing and self-transcending values, our typology distinguishes between individuals drawing primarily on Power or on Achievement values, and indicates how a combination of Achievement and Benevolence values is particularly significant in shaping environmental engagement. This demonstrates the theoretical usefulness of focusing on a complete range of values. Implications for policy and practice are discussed
