    Drifting sub-pulses in two newly discovered pulsars

    We have detected the rare phenomenon of stable, drifting sub-pulse behaviour in two pulsars discovered in the recent Swinburne intermediate latitude pulsar survey. The pulsars; PSR J1231-47 and PSR J1919+0134, have approximate periods (P) of 1.873 and 1.6039 seconds respectively. Both pulsars have multi-component profiles, and distinct drifting is observed across them. We have identified a single drift mode in both pulsars: the drift rate for PSR J1231-47 being 5.4(1) ms P^{-1} and 5.8(2) ms P^{-1} for PSR 1919+0134. The drifting is linear across the profile with no departure from linearity at the edges within the sensitivity of our observations.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures.     In vitro growth characteristics of Fusarium langsethiae isolates recovered from oats and wheat grain in the UK

    Fusarium langsethiae is a fungus that has recently been implicated in the contamination of small-grain cereal crops such as oats, wheat and barley with high levels of HT-2 and T-2 toxins in many European countries. The epidemiology of this fungus is not well known and may therefore be a bigger problem than currently thought to be. A study was carried out investigating the in vitro growth characteristics of F. langsethiae isolates from contaminated oats and wheat at various temperatures; 15, 20, 25 and 30 °C. Results indicated similar growth trends of oats and wheat isolates of F. langsethiae. Wheat isolates grew significantly (p<0.001) faster than oat isolates although this difference may have been confounded by the age of cultures, with oat isolates collected one year earlier. The estimated optimum growth temperature for all isolates was 24 °C. Isolates were macro-morphologically categorized as having lobed or entire colony margins, and either possessing one of the following colony colours: white, orange or purple. Since the estimated optimum growth temperature of F. langsethiae is typical in temperate summers when small-grain cereals are flowering, it is possible that this species can infect, colonise and possibly contaminate the developing grains with HT-2 and T-2 toxins which are of food safety concern

    Whereas a proportional-plus-derivative controller (designed in Research Reports 220 and 230)for the Cadley Hill tunnelling machine was shown to produce only small load errors in response to changes in rock hardness, errors resulting from excessive manual rate settings were not investigated. It is here proposed that effective integral action can be incorporated to eliminate such errors, which can be excessive because of the very wide range of rate settings available to the driver. Implementations using a d.c. blocking circuit in the rate feedback channel of ther N.C.B. controller are tested connected to the analogue simulator of the tunnelling machine and shown to be successful. Redesign of the existing printed circuits will, however, be necessary to achieve an overriding controller that is completely error free

    Seismic data reveal eastern Black Sea Basin structure

    Rifted continental margins are formed by progressive extension of the lithosphere. The development of these margins plays an integral role in the plate tectonic cycle, and an understanding of the extensional process underpins much hydrocarbon exploration. A key issue is whether the lithosphere extends uniformly, or whether extension varies\ud with depth. Crustal extension may be determined using seismic techniques. Lithospheric extension may be inferred from the waterloaded subsidence history, determined from\ud the pattern of sedimentation during and after rifting. Unfortunately, however, many rifted margins are sediment-starved, so the subsidence history is poorly known.\ud To test whether extension varies between the crust and the mantle, a major seismic experiment was conducted in February–March 2005 in the eastern Black Sea Basin (Figure 1), a deep basin where the subsidence history is recorded\ud by a thick, post-rift sedimentary sequence. The seismic data from the experiment indicate the presence of a thick, low-velocity zone, possibly representing overpressured sediments. They also indicate that the basement and\ud Moho in the center of the basin are both several kilometers shallower than previously inferred. These initial observations may have considerable impact on thermal models of the petroleum system in the basin. Understanding\ud the thermal history of potential source rocks is key to reducing hydrocarbon exploration risk. The experiment, which involved collaboration between university groups in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Turkey, and BP and\ud Turkish Petroleum (TPAO), formed part of a larger project that also is using deep seismic reflection and other geophysical data held by the industry partners to determine the subsidence history and hence the strain evolution of\ud the basin

    Intermittent preventive treatment and bed nets uptake among pregnant women in Kenya

    Background: Malaria in pregnancy is a preventable disease which results in poor pregnancy outcomes. The use of intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp) and long-lasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs) have been shown to reduce maternal malaria episodes.Objectives: To describe i) The proportion receiving first and second dose (IPTp1 and 2) in malaria endemic zones, ii) proportion receiving IPTp 1 and 2 stratified by coast and lake endemic zones iii) proportion receiving LLINs, stratified by coastal and lake endemic zones.Design: A retrospective descriptive study.Setting: Lake and Coast region malaria endemic zones.Subjects: Pregnant women.Results: IPTp2 dose during an ANC revisit fell by 29% between 2012 and 2015, with 76% receiving an IPTp2 in 2012 and only 47% receiving it in 2015. More pregnant women in Coastal endemic areas received IPTp2 compared to Lake, with 88% versus 73% in 2012, and 53% versus 44% in 2015, respectively.There was steady increase in bed net usage from 69% and 54% in 2012 to 96% and 95% in 2015 for lake and coast endemic zones respectively. The uptake of LLINs was 15% higher in the lake region compared to the coastal endemic region in 2012 and significantly declined over the five years to 6%, 7% and 1% in 2013, 2014 and 2015, respectively.Conclusion: Our study found that there has been a significant decline from 2012 through 2015, in the number of pregnant women in Kenya receiving recommended malaria prophylaxis in the regions of highest malaria burden. However, the coverage of LLIN has consistently improved over the same period

    Magazine and reader constructions of 'metrosexuality' and masculinity: a membership categorisation analysis

    Since the launch of men's lifestyle magazines in the 1980s, academic literature has predominantly focused on them as a cultural phenomenon arising from entrepreneurial and commercial initiatives and/or as cultural texts that proffer representations of masculinity such as 'new lad' and 'new dad'. This paper steps aside from the focus on culture and, instead, treats magazine content as a discursive space in which gender and sexuality are oriented to, negotiated, and accomplished within and beyond the magazine itself (i.e. through readers' responses). Specifically, membership categorisation analysis is deployed to explore how the relatively new (and perhaps alternative) category for men - 'metrosexual' - is presented and received. Our analysis suggests that masculinity concerns are central in debates about 'metrosexuality', with self-identified 'metrosexuals' invoking heterosexual prowess and self-respect on the one hand, and critics (e.g. selfidentified 'real men') lamenting 'metrosexuality' for its perceived effeminacy and lack of authenticity on the other. Implications for understanding contemporary masculinities are discussed

    Expression of tumor necrosis factor [alpha] converting enzyme in endocrine cancers

    Tumor necrosis factor [alpha] converting enzyme (TACE) mediates shedding of human epidermal growth factor receptor-4 (HER4). Recent data suggest that released HER4 intracellular domain (4ICD) induces apoptosis in breast cancer. TACE expression, as measured by immunohistochemical analysis, was observed in 183 of 383 breast carcinomas, 39 of 217 ovarian carcinomas, and 16 of 24 and 17 of 24 hormone-sensitive and hormone-insensitive prostate carcinomas, respectively. HER4 expression was detected in breast carcinomas by using 2 antibodies recognizing an extracellular or intracellular epitope. TACE expression was predominantly seen in tumors with high levels of 4ICD and membranous HER4. Apoptotic activity was measured by the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay and cleaved caspase-3 staining in breast carcinomas. There was no significant association between cleaved caspase-3 or TUNEL positivity and 4ICD, whereas TUNEL positivity was seen predominantly in tumors with high levels of internalized HER4. The data presented herein show TACE expression in endocrine cancers and further support a role for TACE in breast cancer apoptosis

    A Bayesian approach to the g-formula

    Epidemiologists often wish to estimate quantities that are easy to communicate and correspond to the results of realistic public health interventions. Methods from causal inference can answer these questions. We adopt the language of potential outcomes under Rubin’s original Bayesian framework and show that the parametric g-formula is easily amenable to a Bayesian approach. We show that the frequentist properties of the Bayesian g-formula suggest it improves the accuracy of estimates of causal effects in small samples or when data are sparse. We demonstrate an approach to estimate the effect of environmental tobacco smoke on body mass index among children aged 4–9 years who were enrolled in a longitudinal birth cohort in New York, USA. We provide an algorithm and supply SAS and Stan code that can be adopted to implement this computational approach more generally
