Lowest-energy structures of 13-atom binary clusters: Do icosahedral clusters exist in binary liquid alloys?
Although the existence of 13-atom icosahedral clusters in one-component
close-packed undercooled liquids was predicted more than half a century ago by
Frank, the existence of such icosahedral clusters is less clear in liquid
alloys. We study the lowest-energy structures of 13-atom AxB13-x Lennard-Jones
binary clusters using the modified space-fixed genetic algorithm and the
artificial Lennard-Jones potential designed by Kob and Andersen. Curiously, the
lowest-energy structures are non-icosahedral for almost all compositions. The
role played by the icosahedral cluster in a binary glass is questionable.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure (conference paper of LAM12) to be published in J.

Bubble wall perturbations coupled with gravitational waves
We study a coupled system of gravitational waves and a domain wall which is
the boundary of a vacuum bubble in de Sitter spacetime. To treat the system, we
use the metric junction formalism of Israel. We show that the dynamical degree
of the bubble wall is lost and the bubble wall can oscillate only while the
gravitational waves go across it. It means that the gravitational backreaction
on the motion of the bubble wall can not be ignored.Comment: 23 pages with 3 eps figure
Spin current in ferromagnet/insulator/superconductor junctions
A theory of spin polarized tunneling spectroscopy based on a scattering
theory is given for tunneling junctions between ferromagnets and d-wave
superconductors. The spin filtering effect of an exchange field in the
insulator is also treated. We clarify that the properties of the Andreev
reflection are largely modified due to a presence of an exchange field in the
ferromagnets, and consequently the Andreev reflected quasiparticle shows an
evanescent-wave behavior depending on the injection angle of the quasiparticle.
Conductance formulas for the spin current as well as the charge current are
given as a function of the applied voltage and the spin-polarization in the
ferromagnet for arbitrary barrier heights. It is shown that the surface bound
states do not contribute to the spin current and that the zero-bias conductance
peak expected for a d-wave superconductor splits into two peaks under the
influence of the exchange interaction in the insulator.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figure
Spin polarized tunneling in ferromagnet/unconventional superconductor junctions
We study tunneling in ferromagnet/unconventional superconductor (F/S)
junctions. We include the effects of spin polarization, interfacial resistance,
and Fermi wavevector mismatch (FWM) between the F and S regions. Andreev
reflection (AR) at the F/S interface, governing tunneling at low bias voltage,
is strongly modified by these parameters. The conductance exhibits a very wide
variety of features as a function of applied voltage.Comment: Revision includes new figures with angular averages and correction of

Large Orbital Magnetic Moment and Coulomb Correlation effects in FeBr2
We have performed an all-electron fully relativistic density functional
calculation to study the magnetic properties of FeBr2. We show for the first
time that the correlation effect enhances the contribution from orbital degrees
of freedom of electrons to the total magnetic moment on Fe as
opposed to common notion of nearly total quenching of the orbital moment on
Fe site. The insulating nature of the system is correctly predicted when
the Hubbard parameter U is included. Energy bands around the gap are very
narrow in width and originate from the localized Fe-3 orbitals, which
indicates that FeBr2 is a typical example of the Mott insulator.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, revtex4, PRB accepte
Wavefunction topology of two-dimensional time-reversal symmetric superconductors
We discuss the topology of the wavefunctions of two-dimensional time-reversal
symmetric superconductors. We consider (a) the planar state, (b) a system with
broken up-down reflection symmetry, and (c) a system with general spin-orbit
interaction. We show explicitly how the relative sign of the order parameter on
the two Fermi surfaces affects this topology, and clarify the meaning of the
classification for these topological states.Comment: only the Introduction has been modified from v
Programmable models of growth and mutation of cancer-cell populations
In this paper we propose a systematic approach to construct mathematical
models describing populations of cancer-cells at different stages of disease
development. The methodology we propose is based on stochastic Concurrent
Constraint Programming, a flexible stochastic modelling language. The
methodology is tested on (and partially motivated by) the study of prostate
cancer. In particular, we prove how our method is suitable to systematically
reconstruct different mathematical models of prostate cancer growth - together
with interactions with different kinds of hormone therapy - at different levels
of refinement.Comment: In Proceedings CompMod 2011, arXiv:1109.104
Effect of different bur grinding on the bond strength of self\u2013etching adhesives
This study compared the microtensile bond strength (MTBS) of three all-in-one adhesive systems and a two-step system using two types of burs to prepare the dentin surfaces. Flat coronal surfaces of 24 extracted human molars were produced using either regular-grit or superfine-grit diamond burs. Resin composite was then bonded to equal numbers of these surfaces using one of the four adhesives: Clearfil SE Bond (CSE), G-Bond (GB), SSB-200 (SSB) or Prompt L-Pop (PLP). After storage for 24 hours in 37 C distilled water, the bonded teeth were sectioned into slices (0.7-mm thick) perpendicular to the bonded surface. The specimens were then subjected to microtensile testing and the bond strengths were calculated at failure. Bond strength data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and the Games-Howell test for interaction between adhesive and type of cut dentin. The fractured surfaces were observed by SEM to determine the failure mode. In addition, to observe the effect of conditioning, equal numbers of the two bur-cut dentin surfaces of eight additional teeth were conditioned with the adhesives and observed by SEM. Based on the results, when CSE and SSB were bonded to dentin cut with a regular-grit diamond bur, the MTBS values were significantly lower than that of superfine bur-cut dentin; whereas, GB and PLP showed no significant differences in MTBS between the two differently cut surfaces. SEM observation of the fractured surfaces revealed a mixed mode (adhesive in some areas and cohesive in others in the same sample) of failure in all specimens except PLP, which showed cohesive failure within the adhesive for both types of bur preparation. Generally, SEMs of the conditioned surfaces using both types of burs showed partial removal of the smear layer for CSE, minimal for GB and SSB and complete removal for PLP.
In conclusion, when cutting dentin, selecting the proper bur type is important for improving the bond strength of some self-etching adhesive systems
