    Synergism of mutant frequencies in the mouse lymphoma cell mutagenicity assay by binary mixtures of methyl methanesulfonate and ethyl methanesulfonate

    The effect of mixed mutagen exposures on the rate and type of induced mutants was studied in the L5178Y/TK+/- --> TK-/- mouse lymphoma cell mutagenicity assay. In this assay, exposure to ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) results in more mutants that form large colonies than small colonies. Exposure to methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) results in more mutants that form small colonies than large colonies. Other reports in the literature suggest that large colony TK-/- mutants appear to result from small-scale, perhaps single-gene mutations, and that small-colony TK-/- mutants appear to be associated with chromosomal mutations. Treating cells for 4 h with simple, 2-component mixtures containing 6.45 [mu]g/ml MMS and either 261, 392, 560 or 712 [mu]g/ml EMS resulted in synergism of mutants at each mixture level. The frequencies of total mutants were synergized 12,20,35 and 72%, respectively, in mixed exposures with graded doses of EMS, above the sums of the mixture components. Small colony mutants were synergized to a greater extent than large colony mutants. The frequencies of small colony mutants in mixed exposures were increased 31, 54, 73 and 123%, respectively, while the frequencies of large colony mutants were increased -7, -6, 11 and 39%. Statistical analyses provide strong evidence of synergism (within the limits of the assay) for total and small-colony mutants at all doses of EMS tested, and for large-colony mutants above 400 [mu]g/ml EMS. Similar magnitudes of synergism resulted when other constant levels of MMS (4.30 or 8.60 [mu]g/ml) were mixed with the same graded doses of EMS.     Sustainable Affordable Housing - Submission to Inquiry into First Home Ownership

    The Institute welcomes this opportunity to submit comments to the Commissions Inquiry evaluating the affordability and availability of housing for first home buyers. The Institute for Sustainable Futures is a self-funded research and consulting institute of the University of Technology, Sydney. The Institutes mission is to support and create change towards sustainable futures by working with government, industry and the community. Social sustainability, sustainable housing and sustainable urban infrastructure for energy, water and transport are all key parts of this mission.1 This submission seeks to evaluate the affordability and availability of housing for first home buyers within the framework of ecologically sustainable development (ESD). It is in two parts. Part I: Submission provides the framework. Part II: Comments on the Commissions Issues Paper provides more details on this framework under the broad headings used in the Commissions Issues Paper

    Great Expectations: The role of the wig stylist (sheitel macher) in orthodox Jewish salons

    Wigs are curious liminal objects that hover somewhere between the categories of prosthesis and clothing and offer a variety of possibilities from transformation to hair substitution, covering and disguise. In this article I focus on the particular demands and expectations placed upon the sheitel (Yiddish term for wig) worn by increasing numbers of married Jewish women who identify as frum (Torah-observant). Based on research in Jewish wig salons in Britain and the United States and on Jewish online forums, internet discussions and blogs with a wider geographic reach, this article sets out to show the complex web of material, social, emotional, aesthetic and moral concerns that cluster around the sheitel and to highlight the role of the sheitel macher (wig stylist) in managing these anxieties and expectations. If all wigs are fraught with expectations in terms of their capacity to enable successful social performances, sheitels, it is argued, carry a particularly high burden of expectations owing to their contested and multivalent role as material embodiments of religious commitment, social status and fashion competence and owing to the ambivalent feelings many Jewish women have towards their wigs

    In 2001, the People's Union for Civil Liberties submitted a writ petition to the Supreme Court of India on the “right to food.” The petitioner was a voluntary human rights organization; the initial respondents were the Government of India, the Food Corporation of India, and six state governments. The petition opens with three pointed questions posed to the court: * A. Does the right to life mean that people who are starving and who are too poor to buy food grains ought to be given food grains free of cost by the State from the surplus stock lying with the State, particularly when it is reported that a large part of it is lying unused and rotting? * B. Does not the right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution of India include the right to food? * C. Does not the right to food, which has been upheld by the Honourable Court, imply that the state has a duty to provide food especially in situations of drought, to people who are drought affected and are not in a position to purchase food

    The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of occupational exposure to 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) on peak flowmetry in automobile body paint shop workers in Iran. We studied a population of 43 car painters exposed to HDI at their workplaces. Peak expiratory fl ow was tested for one working week, from the start to the end of each shift. Air was sampled and HDI analysed in parallel, according to the OSHA 42 method. Daily and weekly HDI exposure averages were (0.42±0.1) mg m-3 and (0.13±0.05) mg m-3, respectively. On painting days, 72 % of workers showed more than a 10 % variation in peak expiratory fl ow. Inhalation exposure exceeded the threshold limit value (TLV) ten times over. This strongly suggests that HDI affected the peak fl owmetry in the studied workers.Cilj je ovog ispitivanja bio utvrditi vršni protok u 43 iranska autolakirera profesionalno izložena 1,6-heksametilen diizocijanatu (HDI). Prosječna dnevna izloženost radnika HDI-ju iznosila je (0.42±0.1) mg m-3, a tjedna (0.13±0.05) mg m-3. U 72 % radnika vršni ekspiratorni protok tijekom dana varirao je više od 10 %. Radnici su udisali deset puta više razine HDI-ja od graničnih te je moguće da je HDI utjecao na mjerenja plućne funkcije

    Paperwork, patronage and citizenship: the materiality of everyday interactions with bureaucracy in Tamil Nadu, India

    This article explores the material practices through which lower‐caste and poor villagers engage with bureaucracy in contemporary India. We take documents and paperwork – such as ration cards and community certificates – as a ‘lens’ through which to explore how paper materiality is infused with the politics of power, patronage, and identity. The article brings ethnography from rural Tamil Nadu, South India, in conversation with two bodies of literature: one on the materiality of bureaucracy and one on the nature of political mediation in contemporary India. We demonstrate how everyday engagements with paperwork as well as processes of applying, form filling, and securing recommendations are constitutive of social and political relationships and, ultimately, of citizenship itself. Political mediation around paperwork and bureaucracy generates a hierarchy of citizens rather than equal citizenship for all, yet ordinary villagers transpire as anything but passive. Drawing on patronage networks, engaging in affective performances, and navigating a politics of identity, they actively negotiate access to the state in an attempt to claim their rights as citizens

    The effects of meteorological factors on the occurrence of Ganoderma sp. spores in the air

    Ganoderma sp. is an airborne fungal spore type known to trigger respiratory allergy symptoms in sensitive patients. Aiming to reduce the risk for allergic individuals, we analysed fungal spore circulation in Szczecin, Poland, and its dependence on meteorological conditions. Statistical models for the airborne spore concentrations of Ganoderma sp.—one of the most abundant fungal taxa in the area—were developed. Aerobiological sampling was conducted over 2004–2008 using a volumetric Lanzoni trap. Simultaneously, the following meteorological parameters were recorded: daily level of precipitation, maximum and average wind speed, relative humidity and maximum, minimum, average and dew point temperatures. These data were used as the explaining variables. Due to the non-linearity and non-normality of the data set, the applied modelling techniques were artificial neural networks (ANN) and mutlivariate regression trees (MRT). The obtained classification and MRT models predicted threshold conditions above which Ganoderma sp. appeared in the air. It turned out that dew point temperature was the main factor influencing the presence or absence of Ganoderma sp. spores. Further analysis of spore seasons revealed that the airborne fungal spore concentration depended only slightly on meteorological factors

    Early incidence of occupational asthma among young bakers, pastry-makers and hairdressers: design of a retrospective cohort study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Occupational exposures are thought to be responsible for 10-15% of new-onset asthma cases in adults, with disparities across sectors. Because most of the data are derived from registries and cross-sectional studies, little is known about incidence of occupational asthma (OA) during the first years after inception of exposure. This paper describes the design of a study that focuses on this early asthma onset period among young workers in the bakery, pastry making and hairdressing sectors in order to assess early incidence of OA in these "at risk" occupations according to exposure duration, and to identify risk factors of OA incidence.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>The study population is composed of subjects who graduated between 2001 and 2006 in these sectors where they experience exposure to organic or inorganic allergenic or irritant compounds (with an objective of 150 subjects by year) and 250 young workers with no specific occupational exposure. A phone interview focusing on respiratory and 'Ear-Nose-Throat' (ENT) work-related symptoms screen subjects considered as "possibly OA cases". Subjects are invited to participate in a medical visit to complete clinical and lung function investigations, including fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FE<sub>NO</sub>) and carbon monoxide (CO) measurements, and to collect blood samples for IgE (Immunoglobulin E) measurements (total IgE and IgE for work-related and common allergens). Markers of oxidative stress and genetic polymorphisms exploration are also assessed. A random sample of 200 "non-cases" (controls) is also visited, following a nested case-control design.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>This study may allow to describ a latent period between inception of exposure and the rise of the prevalence of asthma symptoms, an information that would be useful for the prevention of OA. Such a time frame would be suited for conducting screening campaigns of this emergent asthma at a stage when occupational hygiene measures and adapted therapeutic interventions might be effective.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>Clinical trial registration number is NCT01096537.</p
