On the attenuation coefficient of monomode periodic waveguides
It is widely accepted that, on ensemble average, the transmission T of guided
modes decays exponentially with the waveguide length L due to small
imperfections, leading to the important figure of merit defined as the
attenuation-rate coefficient alpha = -/L. In this letter, we evidence
that the exponential-damping law is not valid in general for periodic monomode
waveguides, especially as the group velocity decreases. This result that
contradicts common beliefs and experimental practices aiming at measuring alpha
is supported by a theoretical study of light transport in the limit of very
small imperfections, and by numerical results obtained for two waveguide
geometries that offer contrasted damping behaviours
The exon 13 duplication in the BRCA1 gene is a founder mutation present in geographically diverse populations
Cataloged from PDF version of article.Recently, a 6-kb duplication of exon 13, which creates a frameshift in the coding sequence of the BRCA1 gene, has been described in three unrelated U.S. families of European ancestry and in one Portuguese family. Here, our goal was to estimate the frequency and geographic diversity of carriers of this duplication. To do this, a collaborative screening study was set up that involved 39 institutions from 19 countries and included 3,580 unrelated individuals with a family history of the disease and 934 early-onset breast and/or ovarian cancer cases. A total of 11 additional families carrying this mutation were identified in Australia (1), Belgium (1), Canada (1), Great Britain (6), and the United States (2). Haplotyping showed that they are likely to derive from a common ancestor, possibly of northern British origin. Our results demonstrate that it is strongly advisable, for laboratories carrying out screening either in English-speaking countries or in countries with historical links with Britain, to include within their BRCA1 screening protocols the polymerase chain reaction-based assay described in this report
Multi-Channel Stochastic Variational Inference for the Joint Analysis of Heterogeneous Biomedical Data in Alzheimer's Disease
The joint analysis of biomedical data in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is
important for better clinical diagnosis and to understand the relationship
between biomarkers. However, jointly accounting for heterogeneous measures
poses important challenges related to the modeling of the variability and the
interpretability of the results. These issues are here addressed by proposing a
novel multi-channel stochastic generative model. We assume that a latent
variable generates the data observed through different channels (e.g., clinical
scores, imaging, ...) and describe an efficient way to estimate jointly the
distribution of both latent variable and data generative process. Experiments
on synthetic data show that the multi-channel formulation allows superior data
reconstruction as opposed to the single channel one. Moreover, the derived
lower bound of the model evidence represents a promising model selection
criterion. Experiments on AD data show that the model parameters can be used
for unsupervised patient stratification and for the joint interpretation of the
heterogeneous observations. Because of its general and flexible formulation, we
believe that the proposed method can find important applications as a general
data fusion technique.Comment: accepted for presentation at MLCN 2018 workshop, in Conjunction with

Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics with Anderson-localized Modes
A major challenge in quantum optics and quantum information technology is to
enhance the interaction between single photons and single quantum emitters.
Highly engineered optical cavities are generally implemented requiring
nanoscale fabrication precision. We demonstrate a fundamentally different
approach in which disorder is used as a resource rather than a nuisance. We
generate strongly confined Anderson-localized cavity modes by deliberately
adding disorder to photonic crystal waveguides. The emission rate of a
semiconductor quantum dot embedded in the waveguide is enhanced by a factor of
15 on resonance with the Anderson-localized mode and 94 % of the emitted
single-photons couple to the mode. Disordered photonic media thus provide an
efficient platform for quantum electrodynamics offering an approach to
inherently disorder-robust quantum information devices

Dynamics of particles and cages in an experimental 2D glass former
We investigate the dynamics of a glass forming 2D colloidal mixture and show
the existence of collective motions of the particles. We introduce a mean
square displacement MSD with respect to the nearest neighbors which shows
remarkable deviations from the usual MSD quantifying the individual motion of
our particles. Combined with the analysis of the self part of the Van Hove
function this indicates a coupled motion of particles with their cage as well
as intra cage hopping processes.Comment: Submitted to EP
Bounded Languages Meet Cellular Automata with Sparse Communication
Cellular automata are one-dimensional arrays of interconnected interacting
finite automata. We investigate one of the weakest classes, the real-time
one-way cellular automata, and impose an additional restriction on their
inter-cell communication by bounding the number of allowed uses of the links
between cells. Moreover, we consider the devices as acceptors for bounded
languages in order to explore the borderline at which non-trivial decidability
problems of cellular automata classes become decidable. It is shown that even
devices with drastically reduced communication, that is, each two neighboring
cells may communicate only constantly often, accept bounded languages that are
not semilinear. If the number of communications is at least logarithmic in the
length of the input, several problems are undecidable. The same result is
obtained for classes where the total number of communications during a
computation is linearly bounded
